Chris Andersen has made his last 12 field goals in playoffs, starting with his last basket in Game 4 of the Chicago series, and then 3 straight playoff games without a miss (he also makes all his free throws in God Mode for the last 4 games).

Are there any data on such streaks? Except for Wilt's regular season record of 35 straight FGM in 1967, I haven't found any.

M. Jordan made 13 consecutive field goals vs the Lakers on June 5, 1991 which is the record for most consecutive in a playoff game and also the record for most consecutive in the Finals. I don't know if anyone made any more than that if you count carry-overs from game to game in a preliminary round.

Carmelo's 2nd listed streak is ok, but who is the player with a 286-game streak?
Nowitzki's 1st listed streak is ok. Karl Malone instead had a streak of 176 games in double figures from 16Mar88 to 12Apr90.

Robert Bradley wrote:Randy Smith, BUF/SDC/CLE/NYK/SDC 906 18Feb72 to 13Mar83 Waived by San Diego

A few notes on the end of Smith's streak:

Smith was waived, thus ending the streak, at his own request. He was apparently unhappy in San Diego, and felt he had no future with the Clippers. He wanted a chance to play for a team that was headed for the postseason (up to that point, Smith had only appeared in the playoffs three times in his career, and it had been seven years since his last appearance) and felt that playing out the string in San Diego would not be conducive to finding a role with another team for the following season. See the AP wire service article below:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=8 ... 46,4047574

The article suggests that the NBA considered Smith's streak to be broken due to any games played by the Clippers while he was passing through waivers. It is my understanding that players waived with the season in progress take two days to clear, and that this has been true for many years, though I can't claim to understand all of the nitty-gritty details that would define the exact moment a player comes off waivers, or whether any of that has changed over time. Smith's final appearance with the Clippers was on 3/13/83, in the Clippers' 65th game of the season. Smith was waived on 3/15. The Clippers played a game on 3/15, then another on 3/17. Smith was certainly still on waivers at the time of the 3/15 game, and may have still been at the time of the 3/17 game as well. Smith signed with the Hawks on 3/18, and made his debut with them on the same day.

When Smith joined the Hawks, they had 16 games remaining in the regular season. Smith played in 15 of these games; he did not appear in the game against Philadelphia on 3/30/83. The Hawks made the playoffs but lost a best-of-three first-round series to the Celtics, 2 games to 1. Smith appeared in two of the three playoff games. He did not play in Game 1 of the series. As it turned out, despite Smith's ambitions to position himself for the following season, this would be his last year in the NBA.

Today, the NBA has a rule prohibiting a player from appearing in the playoffs for his current team if he was on another team's roster on or after March 1 of the same season. As a result, a player today who wants to move from a bad team to a contender needs to do so earlier in the season than Smith did, or he will be ineligible for the playoffs. I don't know when this rule was added, but it was in place within a few years after 1983. Smith's was one of at least two notable cases of this happening in 1983 -- Steve Mix went from the Bucks to the Lakers even later in the season -- and I have to wonder if that was what prompted the league to create the rule. Major League Baseball has had a similar rule for decades.

Robert's list notes that Terry Tyler's streak ended when he began the 1985-86 season as an unsigned free agent. Smith's streak nearly ended in the same manner at the start of the 1982-83 season. He was signed by the Clippers the day before the season began. One detail I've never seen an explanation of, however, is why his former team's (Knicks) right of first refusal wasn't an issue. At the time, virtually all NBA free agents were subject to a right of first refusal, and teams had 15 days to exercise it. Unlike today, teams were also allowed to negotiate compensation in exchange for agreeing to waive their right of first refusal. It was very common for teams to wait the full 15 days before deciding what to do. By all appearances, Smith simply signed with the Clippers the day before the season started and that was that, with no 15-day period, opportunity to match or compensation involved. Did the Knicks agree to waive their right on the first day, or even in advance, so as not to cause Smith's streak to be interrupted? Did his prior contract with the Knicks not give them a right of first refusal (which was allowed, but very rare, and would seem to have made it easier for him to get an offer from another team earlier in the offseason)?

While looking for something entirely different, I came across a third player who in 1982-83 was waived after March 1, subsequently signed with a new team, then appeared in the playoffs for that new team: Billy Paultz, who went from the Rockets to the Spurs.

Thanks for the additional information on Randy Smith's streak and the circumstances around its conclusion.

From what I've read Kerr was pretty steamed that his streak ended with a DNP-CD.
