Most players on NBA Roster from same college ?

Most players on NBA Roster from same college ?

Postby Jon Scott » Wed Dec 09, 2015 4:28 am

With rumors of potentially Terrence Jones being traded to the Phoenix Suns (which would give the Sun a fifth former Wildcat to go along with Brandon Knight, Archie Goodwin, Eric Bledsoe & Devin Booker), I was curious if anyone knew what the record for most players from the same college on the same NBA roster was ?

I know that the 1949-50 Indianapolis Olympians had six former UK players (Cliff Barker, Ralph Beard, Alex Groza, Joe Holland, Wallace Jones and Jack Parkinson). Seven if you count Malcolm McMullen who played at UK two seasons before transferring to Xavier.

Anybody know if this is the record? Also is there a record for teams after the territorial picks stopped in 1965? Currently the Suns have 4 Kentucky players, and the 1997-98 Boston Celtics also had 4 Kentucky players (Antoine Walker, Walter McCarty, Ron Mercer and for a short time Reggie Hanson). Any teams with more than that?

I don't know what the BAA/NBA record is but in the NBL there were a few teams
that had 6 or more players from the same school:

1937-38 Kankakee Gallagher Trojans - 8 players from Gallagher Business School
1938-39 Pittsburgh Pirates - 8 players from Duquesne
1942-43 Toledo Jim White Chevrolets - 6 players from U. Toledo

My guess in the NBA is that some team in the 1970s or 80s had 5 or more from UCLA
but it'll take some checking.

Yeah, I figure if there were 4 or more beyond the Kentucky teams I noted, it would either be from UCLA or UNC.

Taking a few selected UCLA players and checking each year they played:

Lucius Allen - most teammates from same school was (3) Allen, Kareem and Gail Goodrich on 1975-76 Lakers and Allen, Andre McCarter and Richard Washington on 1977-78 Kansas City Kings:

I checked UCLA last night. Basketball-reference.com lists 87 players from UCLA but
they include Edgar Lacey and Lynn Shackelford both of whom only played in the ABA.
However, they did not include Greg Foster, Corey Gaines, Drew Gordon and Brett Vroman
each of whom started at UCLA but finished elsewhere. Total is thus 89. They played a combined
total of 599 player-seasons.

With all those players I felt sure that there were seasons with 5 or more on the same NBA team.
But I was wrong.
Every year since 1951 (with the exception of 1956) there has been at least one player from UCLA
in the NBA. 1972 was the first year with 10 players from UCLA in the league. Since 1972 there have
been at least 8 UCLA players each season with highs of 18 in 1981 and 20 in 2015.

Yet, despite the number of ex-UCLA players in the league, they were spread throughout and
in only 16 instances were there as many as 3 on the same team.
LAL 1976, POR 1976, KCK 1978, LAL 1980, MIL 1980, SDG 1980, DAL 1981, LAL 1981, SDG 1981,
LAL 1984, PHX 1985, PHX 1986, LAC 2014, MIN 2014, SAC 2015.

The surprise result of this study was the 2015 Philadelphia 76ers - the only NBA team who had 4 ex-Bruins:
Larry Drew, Drew Gordon, Malcolm Lee and Luc Mbah a Moute.

Thanks for looking at UCLA in-depth.

FYI, I did look at few UCONN players, since I know that a number of them have been in the league in recent years.

Rudy Gay most is (3) Gay, Marcus Williams and Hasheem Thabeet on 2009-10 Memphis Grizzlies

http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/MEM/2010.html

Ray Allen didn't really have a large concentration of Huskies on any particular team

Caron Butler most is (3), Butler, Jeremy Lamb and Hasheem Thabeet on the 2013-14 Oklahoma City Thunder.

If you count players on the injured list, the 1980-81 Clippers had four players from UCLA - Henry Bibby, Swen Nater, Bill Walton and Sidney Wicks (Walton was on the injured list all season).

Also, according to the Clippers Media Guide, Greg Lee was with the Clippers for a portion of the 1979-80 season, but was on the injured list and did not play in any games. Counting Lee would give that year's team four players from UCLA as well (the three who actually played were Nater, Walton and Wicks).
