Single-Game Career Highs

Single-Game Career Highs

Postby MCT » Fri Jan 16, 2009 9:28 pm

There have been a number of questions here recently on players’ single-game career highs, to which I have responded by looking up the information in the NBA Guide/Register. I thought it might be interesting to just post some of this information for prominent players.

For anyone who’s not familiar with what I’m talking about: for many years, the NBA Guide or NBA Register included a section showing single-game career highs in various categories for every player who had appeared in the league the year before. For recent players, career highs in a variety of categories are now just a few mouse-clicks away, at b-r.com. But for players who played all or part of their careers before 1986 (when b-r.com’s box score coverage begins), the hard copy Guides and Registers are probably still the best source out there. A player’s highs for his entire career can be determined by looking him up in the edition for the season following his last year in the NBA.

The oldest NBA Guide I have is the 1964-65 edition, and this feature is included there (IINM, the Guide began publication in the late ‘50s, so this feature may very well have first appeared earlier than 1964). For the 1982-83 edition, the Career Highs feature moved to the NBA Register (the Register had begun publication as a separate book from the Guide in 1980; before that, the Guide contained a section with Register-type information). It remained there through the 2003-04 edition.

For 2004-05, the Career Highs section was not included in either the Guide or the Register. I assume that it was deleted due to the wide availability of information on the internet. I haven’t checked every year since then, but as far as I know it hasn’t been brought back since. (As discussed in a thread here a while back, the Guide and Register themselves seem to have fallen victim to the internet; the 2007-08 editions were apparently distributed only to NBA teams and journalists and were not sold to the general public. I’m guessing that the same is true for ’08-‘09.) In any event, I have a copy of whichever publication the Career Highs feature appeared in, either the Guide or the Register, for every year from 1964-65 until its demise.

I’ve decided to focus on players who scored at least 10,000 points in their NBA career. Since my NBA Register collection starts with the 1964-65 edition, I don't have career highs info on players whose careers ended before the 1963-64 season. With fewer teams, shorter careers, and anyone who started prior to 1954 playing all or part of their career in the pre-shot clock era, there were weren't many players whose careers ended before that who reached 10,000 points, but there were a few. Here's the list (Bob Cousy would be on this list as well were it not for his brief comeback in 1969-70):

George Mikan
Ed Macauley
Vern Mikkelsen
Neil Johnston
Bill Sharman
Paul Arizin
Larry Foust
Carl Braun

As of the 1964-65 edition, the NBA Guide provided career highs in the following categories: PTS, REB, AST, FGM, FGA, FTM and FTA. Regular-season and playoff highs were provided. Contrary to what I said above, the first few editions in my collection don’t literally include every player form the season before. They appear to omit some "unimportant" players (mainly guys who didn’t finish the season in the league and/or didn’t appear in many games, although it looks like who to include and who to omit was at least in part a subjective decision). That doesn’t affect anyone in the 10,000-point club, though. By 1966 it appears that every single player from the year before was included.

I’ve listed info for players with at least 10,000 career points below, by the year they made their final NBA appearance, starting with 1964 (i.e., last NBA appearance was in the 1963-64 season). This first batch runs through 1973. My convention of listing FGM/FGA and FTM/FTA on the same line should not be taken to mean that a player’s high in attempts and makes were in the same game; they may have been, or they may have been achieved in different games. Unless stated otherwise, the reader should assume that all totals are NBA only and do not include games played in the ABA or any other league.

I would please like to know what is Sidney Moncrief's career high in rebounds, assists, steals and blocks? I've already know he scored a career high 43 points.

Sidney Moncrief (from 1991-92 NBA Register)

Regular Season
PTS 43
REB 15
AST 12
FGM 16
FGA 26
FTM 18
FTA 21

Playoffs
PTS 34
REB 13
AST 8

At this point, the NBA Register still hadn't yet begun to include blocks and steals.

I had mentioned Rick Barry's ABA totals above. So far, we've encountered at least five other players who saw time in the ABA, but I don't have any useful ABA information on any of the others. Just for the record:

Cliff Hagan -- came out of retirement to serve as player-coach in ABA -- I don't have any ABA Guides from the time period when Hagan was playing in the ABA.

Spencer Haywood -- played first pro season in ABA before jumping to NBA -- I don't have any ABA Guides from the time period when Haywood was playing in the ABA.

Charlie Scott -- played first pro season and most of second in ABA before jumping to NBA -- I have the ABA Guide published following Scott's last season in the ABA (1972-73), but he isn't listed. Similar to the mid '60s NBA Guides I had mentioned in the first post in this thread, the career highs section of the ABA Guide often omitted players who hadn't finished the previous season in the league, or even players who had but weren't expected to play in the ABA in the upcoming season. Since Scott was already in the NBA by the end of the 1971-72 season, the ABA presumably saw no reason to include him in its 1972-73 Guide.

Ray Scott -- jumped from the NBA to the ABA in 1970 and played two years there -- I have the ABA Guide published following Scott's last season in the ABA (1972-73), but he isn't listed (see comments above under Charlie Scott; Ray Scott finished the 1971-72 season with the Squires, but I surmise that he wasn't expected back for 1972-73).

Billy Cunningham -- jumped from NBA to ABA in 1972, then jumped back after two seasons, in 1974 -- I have the ABA Guide published following Cunningham's final season in the ABA (1974-75), and he is listed, but for some reason the totals don't appear to be ABA-specific. They match his NBA career highs as shown above except that his regular-season high in points is shown as 46. (As further evidence that these are not ABA-specific totals, the same totals were published in the career highs section of the 1972-73 ABA Guide, before Cummingham had even appeared in a single ABA game.)

Although Mitchell's last appearance in a regular-season game was in 1988, he saw action in four playoff games in 1990 (the Spurs signed him on the last day of the 1989-90 regular season, then included him on their playoff roster). Mitchell was not included in the 1990-91 NBA Register, so the totals above are taken from the 1988-89 edition. As his playoff single-game career highs in all of the categories shown above exceeded his totals for the entire 1990 playoffs, however, we can safely conclude that he did not set any new single-game career highs in any of the above categories in 1990, and the single-game career highs listed in the 1988-89 NBA Register continued to stand.

Note: For some reason, Barkley is omitted from the Playoff Career Highs portion of the 2000-01 edition of the NBA Register (the layout of the Career Highs section was completely re-done this year; maybe they missed a few players in the transition). The playoff totals above are taken from the 1999-00 edition. Since Barkely did not appear in the playoffs in 2000, the totals from the 1999-00 edition should continue to stand.

Note: For some reason, Hornacek is omitted from the Playoff Career Highs portion of the 2000-01 edition of the NBA Register (the layout of the Career Highs section was completely re-done this year; maybe they missed a few players in the transition). The playoff totals above are taken from the 1999-00 edition. Hornacek appeared in the playoffs in 2000, but b-r.com has the box scores, and I have verified that Hornacek did not exceed any of the above totals. As such, the totals from the 1999-00 edition should continue to stand.

There's a lot of information here that MCT has obviously gone to quite a bit of work to compile. Does anyone think a table is easier to read or could be better in any way?
Here's one attempt:

If MCT doesn't object, I may continue to summarize these lists in tables. Any suggestions for better readability are very welcome. It seems (to me) odd to put a hyphen into shots-attempts, so I didn't. For example, Wilt's high FT and FTA, shown as 28-34 suggests he actually hit 28 of 34 one day. We know he hit 28-32 (in his 100-pt game), and so on another occasion he hit something-of-34 -- right?

Anyway, I failed to get players onto one line (and later there will be more stats), and so had to put in a blank line of separation between players. The year listed is the year of the NBA Guide listing.

Mike Goodman wrote:If MCT doesn't object, I may continue to summarize these lists in tables.

I certainly have no objection. My goal has been to make this information more readily available to those who may be interested in it. Once we're done, does it make sense to post the tables on the APBR web site, or see if b-r.com would be interested in adding this data to the players' pages? I've only been researching players with 10,000 career NBA points, but we could expand it to include additional players in the future.

I had put the hyphen in shots-attempts because I found those stats to be by far the least interesting of those tracked by the NBA Guide/Register, and it reduced the amount of time I had to spend typing them up. (I actually considered not bothering to transcribe them at all, just sticking to PTS, REB and AST. But it seemed like a waste to skip them while I was at it.) I agree that it makes more sense to present them as separate categories.

Some additional notes on this project:

--A few people have posted regarding possible discrepancies in the data. I haven't addressed those comments, but I do appreciate them. Once I've finished posting the data, I'd like to go back to examine these, checking to see if I transcribed the data wrong, if there seems to be an obvious typo in the Guide/Register, etc. I just haven't gotten to that point yet.

--Which raises the question, when will I be "finished"? Once you reach the point where b-r.com has box score data that can be sorted to determine a player's career highs in a multitude of categories, looking up data in NBA Registers becomes uneccesary (which is probably why the NBA Register eventually stopped including this type of data). My most recent posts have included a few players whose entire careers fall within the range of seasons for which b-r.com has regular-season box scores, but we're still hitting some players whose careers began before the 1986-87 season, and b-r.com doesn't have playoff box scores before 1990-91. At this point, I plan to continue at least through players whose last season in the NBA was 2003-04, the last year for which data is available in the NBA Register.

--In the interests of "finishing", I'd also like to find someone with a collection of pre-1964 NBA Guides, to see if they have data for the players listed in the first post.

Elgin & (I peeked again) Hondo each came close w/ a career-high 16-Assist game.

Fat Lever did 20-20-20 as well. Magic Johnson was another near-miss (20+ points and assists, 18 rebounds).

All info below is taken from the 1975-76 ABA Guide, and was current through the 1974-75 season. (Because no ABA Guide was published following the 1975-76 season, there's no easy way to determine whether these were broken in 1975-76, or if they still stood.)

Single-game career high in assists:
Melchionni 16
Erving 11 (15 in playoffs)
McGinnis* 13 (14 in playoffs)
Govan 12
Jabali* 14
Caldwell* 13
Simpson 15

(*McGinnis, Jabali and Caldwell obviously couldn't have been broken these in 1975-76, since they didn't play in the ABA that year.)

The ABA record for most assists in a game is shown as 23, by Larry Brown, Denver vs. Pittsburgh, February 20, 1972.

Only two active players are shown with single-game career highs of 20 or more assists: Al Smith and (believe it or not) Johnny Neumann. Both had a career high of 22.

No ABA player had ever gotten 20 assists in a playoff game. The record was 18 by Louie Dampier in 1971. Al Smith had 20 assists in 1974 in one of those weird tiebreaker games that counted as neither part of the regular season nor part of the playoffs.

I don't have any ABA Guides from when Connie Hawkins was playing in the junior circuit. I do have a couple from Billy Cunningham's ABA days but the career highs presented don't seem to be ABA-specific (discussed in an earlier post in this thread).

Getting back to this project, here's the next group, covering players whose careers ended in the 2000-01 through 2002-03 seasons. The Register published following the 2002-03 season -- the 2003-04 edition -- is the latest Register I have with a Career Highs feature (the 2004-05 edition does not have it).

At this point, I plan to continue at least through players whose last season in the NBA was [2002-03], the last year for which data is available in the NBA Register.

The Register published following the 2002-03 season -- the 2003-04 edition -- is the latest Register I have with a Career Highs feature (the 2004-05 edition does not have it).

For players whose careers ended in 2003-04 or later, there is no NBA Register Career Highs reference covering their entire career. For most of these players, however, b-r.com has box score coverage for their entire career. So we should be able to determine their career highs by consulting b-r.com, with no need to rummage through dusty old NBA Registers.

There are a number of players in this group whose NBA careers began prior to the 1990-91 season, however. Since b-r.com doesn't have complete box score coverage prior to 1990-91 (no playoffs before 1990-91, no regular season before 1986-87), their career highs should be determined by comparing the totals from the 2003-04 Register with b-r.com's data and using whichever is higher. No one source covers their entire career; it's possible these players may have achieved a career high in a season for which b-r.com does not have box score coverage (so b-r.com wouldn't capture it), or in a season after 2002-03 (so the 2003-04 Register wouldn't capture it).

Here are these players' career highs as shown in the 2003-04 NBA Register. These career highs are through 2002-03 only, not for each player's entire NBA career, and should not be relied upon without cross-checking against b-r.com.

MCT wrote:I’ve decided to focus on players who scored at least 10,000 points in their NBA career.

Paul Arizin
Larry Foust
Carl Braun

MCT wrote:...I'd also like to find someone with a collection of pre-1964 NBA Guides, to see if they have data for the players listed in the first post.

Does anyone reading this have any pre-1964 NBA Guides which might have career highs for the above players?

Mikan's last year was 1956, which I think actually pre-dates the introduction of the NBA Guide. Macauley, Mikkelsen and Johnston finished up in '59; Sharman in '61; and Arizin, Foust and Braun in '62.

unfortunately, the 1962-63 guide only lists career highs for active players. that was the earliest listing of career highs that i found.

Robert, what is listed for Wilt's career-high in assists, for both the regular season and the playoffs, through the 1961-62 season?

MCT, what is listed for Wilt's career-high in playoff assists after the '64 and '65 postseasons?
