Dwight Howard 39 free throw attempts

Dwight Howard 39 free throw attempts

Postby Mike Goodman » Fri Jan 13, 2012 3:06 pm

Al Attles’ favorite memory of Wilt Chamberlain is the most obvious: The legendary 100-point game Chamberlain produced for the Philadelphia Warriors against the New York Knicks on March 2, 1962. But Attles also remembers being on hand just days earlier when Chamberlain – his former teammate – set an NBA record with 34 free-throw attempts on Feb. 22, 1962.

Attles never expected either record to be broken in his lifetime. But there he was Thursday night, watching at Oracle Arena as Dwight Howard stepped to the foul line time and again in the Orlando Magic’s 117-109 victory over the Golden State Warriors. When Howard was done, he had taken an astounding 39 free throws, smashing Chamberlain’s 50-year-old regular-season record.

I think Wilt went 28-32 in his 100-point game. What was his FT shooting in the game with 34 attempts?
Dwight missed 18 last night, and I wonder if that's also a record.
Still, he was well above his season avg at .538 success rate.

Since 1985-86, there are 23 instances of a player making 22 or more FT in a game.
Jordan, 26-27 en route to 58 pts, Feb 26, 1987, the only player making over 24.

Shaq went 18-39 in a 2000 Finals game vs Indiana. Are the 39 attempts and 21 misses playoff records?

I believe that record in the category: most missed free throws in a game belongs also to Wilt. In a game against Supersonics (1 December 1967), while he played for 76ers, he made only 8 from 30 free throw attempts, yet despite that fact he scored 52 points.

I made a quick research in my sources and here is a list of all Wilt's NBA games in which he attempted at least 30 free throws (date, Wilt's team, opponent, FTM-FTA)

8 December 1961, Warriors against Lakers, 16-31
13 February 1962, Warriors against Royals, 17-30
22 February 1962, Warriors against Hawks, 19-34
2 March 1962, Warriors against Knicks, 28-32
1 December 1967, 76ers against Supersonics, 8-30
17 October 1969, Lakers against 76ers, 15-30

And yes, Shaq's remarkable achievement during Game 2 of 2000 Finals found its way to a NBA book in two categories: most free throws attempts in one NBA playoff game and most missed free throws in one NBA game. Just for comparison: Wilt's best (or should I say worst?) results in these two categories: 25 and 17 and, similar to Shaq, he achieved them also in one game (Game 5 of series against Celtics, 12 April 1966, Wilt's FTM-FTA numbers: 8-25).

Thanks, I thought you might know.
Shaq missed as many as 15 FT in a regular season game, going 7 of 22, on 12-21-00.
Ben Wallace had identical 7 of 22, on 12-11-05.

Since 1986, we can look up most FTA without a make, with one made, etc.
http://bkref.com/tiny/iNvga
Shaq went 0-11 , 12-08-00.
Chris Dudley hit 1 of 18, 4-14-90 !
No one else has made fewer than 4, of 17 or more attempts.

And in playoffs, Shaq had an 0-8 , 5-29-09
He had two 1-9 games, and also a couple of 2-12's, and two 3-13's.
Shaq and Ben Wallace both had a 4-14 night in 2004.
Shaq has the only two 5-17 games, and one 7-20.

Here is, to my best knowledge, a list of all instances in which a NBA player took at least 30 attempts from free throw line in one NBA game:

REGULAR SEASON
39 - Dwight Howard, 12 January 2012, Magic against Warriors (made 21)
34 - Wilt Chamberlain, 22 February 1962, Warriors against Hawks (made 19)
32 - Wilt Chamberlain, 2 March 1962, Warriors against Knicks (made 28)
31 - Wilt Chamberlain, 8 December 1961, Warriors against Lakers (made 16)
31 - Adrian Dantley, 25 November 1983, Jazz against Rockets (made 27)
31 - Shaquille O'Neal, 19 November 1999, Lakers against Bulls (made 19)
30 - Wilt Chamberlain,13 February 1962, Warriors against Royals (made 17)
30 - Wilt Chamberlain,1 December 1967, 76ers against Supersonics (made 8 )
30 - Wilt Chamberlain,17 October 1969, Lakers against 76ers (made 15)

PLAYOFF
39 - Shaquille O'Neal, 9 June 2000, Lakers against Pacers (made 18)
32 - Bob Cousy, 21 March 1953, Celtics against Nats (made 30)

Remark: in his NBA record-tying game for most free throws made (28) in one game, Adrian Dantley attempted "just" 29 free throws.

Mike mentioned the infamous Dudley's game. According many web sources, for instance http://basketbawful.blogspot.com/2010/0 ... oters.html or http://www.nba.com/playerfile/chris_dudley/bio.html
Dudley missed in that game 13 consecutive free throws breaking Wilt's record in that category. I suspect that the exactly name for that category should be: most consecutive missed free throws in one game. I know that in one game Wilt was 0-10 from free throw line and in other 0-9. Shaq's had even 0-11 night, NBA record. It's quite possible that in span of two or three games (including these ones) they missed more consecutive free throws than Dudley in that one game.
And one finally note: even such poor shooters like Wilt and Shaq had sometimes perfect games from free throw line. Shaq's best game in terms of percentage of free throws was 13-13 ( 17 April 2001 against Rockets), Wilt had two games when he was 8-8 (13 December 1961, against Celtics and - in playoffs -18 April 1972 against Bucks). Hey, even Dudley had two games when he was 4-4 from free throw line.

Here is my list of missed field goals and 3-point field goals:

FG
Joe Fulks, Philadelphia vs. Providence, 03/18/1948, 13-55 , 42 FG missed
Wilt Chamberlain, San Francisco vs. Cincinnati, 10/28/1962, 23-60 , 37 FG missed

3FG
Damon Stoudamire, Portland vs. Golden State, 04/15/2005, 5-21 , 16 3FG missed
Dennis Scott, Orlando vs. New Jersey, 01/09/1996, 2-17 , 15 3FG missed

According to this page - http://bkref.com/tiny/c6vMT
Stoudemire's 21 attempts and 16 misses are both most in a game, since 1985-86 at least.

Switching to Playoffs, we see John Starks' 0-11 in the '94 Finals. He's one of 2 players to miss more than 10 in a game.
The other is Reggie Miller with a 3-16 outing vs the Bucks in '99.
(Reggie was 6-9 inside the arc and 9-9 FT for a game high 30, Pacers winning by 1 .)

Dennis Scott, Orlando vs. New Jersey, 01/09/1996, 2-17 , 15 3FG missed

NBA records???

I've checked "Official NBA Guides" from various years and knowing how record for most 3FGA in one game has evolved over the years I'm sure that these are the records:

MOST MISSED 3P FIELD GOALS IN ONE NBA GAME

Regular season
16 (5-21) - Damon Stoudamire, Portland vs. Golden State, 04/15/2005

(the same number of misses from three-point line had also ABA's Les Selvage in his famous game: 16 (10-26) - Les Selvage, Anaheim vs. Denver, 02/15/1968)

Playoffs
13 (3-16) - Reggie Miller, Indiana vs. Milwaukee, 05/11/1999

With missed field goals there is a bigger problem. In NBA early Yearly Select Circles published in "Official NBA Guides" is quite common that FGA number for particular games listed there were unavailable. But one thing is almost sure. The record holder in that category must be Joe Fulks. Here are these records according to me.

MOST MISSED FIELD GOALS IN ONE NBA GAME

Regular season
42 (13-55) - Joe Fulks, Philadelphia vs. Providence, 03/18/1948

Playoff
38 (8-46) - Joe Fulks, Philadelphia vs. St. Louis, 03/30/1948

As for that latter game, Fulks scored only 21 points and his teammate, Chuck Halbert, also had a poor shooting night, making only 3 of 20 his field goals attempts (some details can be found here

In one game last night, both teams had horrific 3-point shooting performances: Dallas hit 4 of 26, New Orleans shot 2-19. Two team total 6-45
If the Hornets could have hit 3 of 19, they'd have won.
But these aren't records for team futility. Most attempts with given makes:
0-18 - NY vs NJ, 2010-03-06 (NJ 14-24 from the arc)
1-23 - Por vs NY, 2001-11-13 (NY 2-14 : total 3-37)
2-25 - Den @ Ind, 1997-02-20 (Ind 2-9 : total 4-34)
3-29 - GS @ NO, 2008-04-06 (NO 9-23)
4-29 - 2 teams
These teams all lost the game.

In 1995, the Lakers made 4 of 28 and won the game; so there's at least one game, a bit worse than the Mavs last night, by a team that wins the game.
Ah, the losing team in that one, the Kings, made just 3 of 21. Combined 7-49.

Last night, the Knicks' bench combined to shoot 11-26 from the arc, 0-5 from inside the arc, without a FT attempt.
