First Triple Double in Olympic History

First Triple Double in Olympic History

Postby John Grasso » Thu Aug 09, 2012 8:55 am

I happened to notice an item in the NBA.com website that said that LeBron James
triple-double last night was the first triple-double in Olympic basketball history.

Not true - On July 27, 1976 Aleksandr Belov of the Soviet Union had the first one.
He had 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in a game against Canada.

The first one in Olympic women's basketball was by
Joo-Weon Chun of Korea on Sept. 24, 2000 when she scored 10 points and
had 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a game against Cuba.

John Grasso, nba.com should have meant that LeBron is the first U.S. basketball player to have a triple double in Olympic history not first ever.

Please note that I am not positive that assists were included in the "official statistics" at the time. They were recorded to be sure, but for a time FIBA/IOC did not treat them as "official" in the same way that points and rebounds were.

That could explain why many news archives did not have it registered. Contemporary press did not even mention it as a milestone, as far as I am aware.

Fascinating. The NBA started counting rebounds in 1950-51, but assists go back to 1946-47 at least.

I just scanned the Belov box score from the 1976 official records but don't know how
to upload it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

If the picture is not too heavy, you can use tinypic.com . Otherwise, use photobucket.
