Leap Year Day

Here's this year's update.

Leap Year Day - February 29th

Since the beginning of the NBA in 1946 there have been 18 leap years. The first one, 1948, the league was still called the BAA. Two games were played on February 29 that year - the Celtics defeated the Bullets 65-62 and the Stags nipped the Capitols in overtime 76-75. The league has played games on Leap Year Day in every subsequent leap year with the exception of 1960. On February 29, 2008 there were 12 games played - the most ever on one Leap Year Day. This was matched on February 29, 2012.

There have been only three NBA players born on February 29 - John Chaney, 1920; Chucky Brown, 1968 and Vonteego Cummings, 1976. Two others died on February 29 - Doug Kistler, 1980 and Clint Wager, 1996.
Of these five men only Brown played on Leap Year day scoring 18 points in two games in 1996 and 2000.

Henry Dickerson, who had a brief NBA career - 23 games in 1975-77, played his first NBA game on February 29, 1976.

Al Attles with 33 points in 1964, Joe Kopicki with 19 in 1984, and John Crotty with 19 in 1996 all had their NBA career highs on Leap Year day. In 2016 Jabari Parker joined that list with 36.
