April 30, 1998 - Alonzo Mourning (MIA) vs. Larry Johnson (NYK). The famous fight where Jeff Van Gundy grabbed Mourning's legs...

If you read newspaper reports of games during the 1940s and 50s, fights were an almost nightly occurrence.
Rarely were the participants ejected.

the use of two officials, plus no television coverage (meaning no replays to dissect) probably added quite a bit to the rough atmosphere early on John. I think there was probably a bit of a "hockey mentality" as well, with the officials letting the players settle things among themselves to a certain degree.

1Apr62 Wilt Chamberlain (PHW) vs. Sam Jones (BOS) & Guy Rodgers (PHW) vs. Jim Loscutoff (BOS)

this game was memorable for the use of a stool in both fights. first jones used it to ward of an angry wilt, and then later rodgers used it to keep luscotoff at bay.

Are you including off the court fights?

ABA coach Jim Harding vs. ABA owner Gabe Rubin.

This is from Stew Thornley's writeup on the Minnesota Pipers.

"Art Heyman, nursing a groin injury, also missed his chance to play for the Eastern All-Stars; the Pipers’ representatives for the game instead were Tom Washington and Charlie Williams, as well as Coach Harding.

Harding was angered, however, by Washington and Williams absence at a banquet the night before the All-Star Game and attempted to fine them $500 each. His anger increased when he was overruled by team officials, and he sought out part-owner Gabe Rubin.

The result was a bloody midnight confrontation that left Rubin with a welt on his temple (and Harding with a scratched face). Harding was immediately relieved of his All-Star duties by Commissioner Mikan; two days later, he was fired as coach of the Pipers."

or how about this year's fight between former NBA star Dominique Wilkins, now an announcer, and former NBA referee Rashan Michel.

i was thinking more along the line of altercations during or before/after a game, but it's always interesting to hear about the other stories such as sprewell/carlisemo, thomas/lambeer, jordan/cartwright, etc. so feel free to post them as you find them.

one that i should have included was vernon maxwell's foray into the stands to brawl with a heckler in portland on 6May95.

offical sid borgia also punched a spectator on 19Feb59 in syracuse.

boston coach red auerbach traded punches with spectators in st. louis on 30Oct62.

Have you thought about adding an asterisk or some other signifier to fights that occurred in the playoffs?

Regarding Vernon Maxwell, he entered the stands on 6th February 1995, not May.

i caught the maxwell error when i was verifying dates (see bottom list).

i may check and see if i can find any more significant postseason brawls (ricky sobers vs. rick barry and vs. kevin stacom in 1976 come to mind) and then do something like you suggest.

Pistol knocked out two of Twardzik's teeth in a fight 11/16/76 in a game at NO.

I remember watching Derrick Coleman and Corliss Williamson swing wildly at each other in Dec97 at Sacramento--quite entertaining.

But those mere anecdotes are dwarfed by Rick Barry, who wasn't afraid of the occasional fight:

1/19/67 – Fights New York’s Dick Van Arsedale; loses tooth

3/23/67 – Fights LA’s Jerry Chambers

4/3/70 – Ejected after scuffle with Ron Boone (ABA)

4/28/70 – Fights Denver’s Lonnie Wright (ABA)

4/6/71 – Fights Virginia’s Charlie Scott (ABA)

1/9/73 – Fights Detroit’s Fred Foster

2/17//74 – Fights Jerry Sloan of Chicago

2/18/75 – Fights New York’s Bill Bradley 42 seconds into game at MSG

4/24/75 – Fights Seattle’s Leonard Gray; scratched on arms and face by Seattle fans

5/25/75 – Roughed up by Washington’s Mike Riordan – coach Al Attles jumps in

5/16/76 – Fights Rickey Sobers of Phoenix (WCF Game 7)

3/1/77 – Fights Boston’s Sidney Wicks – ejected

2/22/80 – Fights Utah’s Mack Calvin; ejected in second period

...and at least four instances of "making contact with a referee."

great list todd, i'd be curious to know if anyone has seen something similar for 5'9" calvin murphy. i know he had brawls with dale schleuter, sidney wicks, larry mcneill, norm van lier and john brown, but reportedly he had at least 17 fights during his career.

there are the dates for those two games.

probably the most vicious fight pre-kermit washington/rudy tomjanovich that i found was the one on 5jan73 in a game between portland and philadelphia. with 5:14 left in the game in portland larue martin [POR] scuffled with dale schleuter [PHI] and mike price [PHI] under the philadelphia basket. martin and schleuter went to the floor as terry dischinger [POR] and bob davis [POR] joined in the fray. davis then began kicking scleuter in the head, and john q. trapp (who was under suspension by philadelphia) came in and bear-hugged davis. jack mccloskey [POR coach] restrained schleuter, who was now up and trying to get at davis. in the meantime, dischinger and price were yelling at each other, and after dischinger pushed him, price punched dischinger in the mouth, loosening three of his teeth and cutting his hand in the process. davis (requiring 14 stitches in his hand) dischinger and schleuter all found themselves going to the hospital for follow up care.

What's the worst fight between members of the same team?
The fight between the Pipers' coach and owner sounds bad; but what about fights between players?

One of the worst happened a few years ago in the D-League between Awvee Storey and Martynus Andriuskevicius.

Here's the writeup from Wikipedia:

"On December 21, (2006) as a member of the NBA Development League's Dakota Wizards, Andriuškevičius sustained a serious head injury when he was punched by teammate Awvee Storey in an attack during practice in Bismarck, North Dakota. The center suffered a fractured skull, severe concussion, and a two-centimeter hematoma (bruise) on the left side of his brain. Doctors initially thought it would be months before he could speak, but he was able to within a month, and stated his desire to play basketball within a year. Storey was suspended indefinitely. Days later he had his contract terminated and he was dismissed from the league. Andriuškevičius did not wish to pursue charges.

On March 12, 2007, Chicago Bulls doctors cleared Andriuškevičius to participate in contact practices. The Chicago Tribune said it was "a remarkable recovery from the serious brain injury". On April 6, head coach Scott Skiles considered moving the player to the active roster, as he soon started practicing.

On August 11, 2007 his agent announced that he would play in Joventut Badalona, and he signed for the team five days later, but his contract with the team was cancelled shortly after,"

RE Fight between guys from the same team. I remember a story about Iverson and Stackhouse (and perhaps each of their groups of friends) going at it during AI's rookie season. I asked Rex Walters about it during an interview last year and he told me he missed it; had stepped out to the bathroom. We both laughed. I heard it was a real good one, though.

Speaking of Stack, he fought Laettner on the team plane during a fight over a card game when they both played for the Pistons.

There was an AP/UPI picture that was in the newspaper of the Price-Dischinger fight...Ironic re: the teeth loss that Dischinger became a dentist,no?....And Mike Price was the older brother of Jim Price?....Vernon Maxwell threw some weights at Gary Payton in the pregame Seattle locker room, and Dale Ellis and Alton Lister's wive's got into it after the two player's themselves fought right out in front of the team's office's during the daytime....Supersonics' Wives Involved In Fistfight
March 04, 1988|Daily News Wire Services

The wives of the Seattle SuperSonics' Dale Ellis and Alton Lister face possible banishment from the Seattle Coliseum for a postgame fistfight Tuesday, and one of them has filed assault charges.

Dale Ellis's wife, Monique; her sister, whose name was not available; and Alton Lister's wife, Bobbie Jo, were involved in the altercation and were later restrained by Seattle police.

The Seattle Police Department yesterday confirmed that a report with charges has been filed regarding the incident.

The charges were filed by Bobbie Jo Lister after Monique Ellis and her sister allegedly attacked her after the game.In my mind, this is a family matter," team president Bob Whitsitt said. ''But we can't hide it. The incident did occur. It's embarrassing."....

The fight interrupted coach Bernie Bickerstaff's news conference in a room 150 feet away, causing Bickerstaff to ask, "What's going on out there?"

The NBA security department is looking into the matter. There is a possibility the women might be banished from Sonics games at least temporarily until the investigation is completed.

The two wives have squabbled since the Sonics' final preseason game in Bellingham, Wash. According to a source in the Sonics' organization, their dispute began over the fact that Lister had signed a four-year, $4.2 million contract, while Ellis and the Sonics failed to settle on a new contract before the final year of a five-year pact that pays him $325,000 this season.

The two wives reportedly inflicted some nasty scratches to each other in a physical altercation last month in the Seattle Coliseum's parking lot after a game.

Neither the players nor their wives were available to comment. ---------------------------------------- ALSO.....Dale Ellis vs. Xavier McDaniel, 1990: On Nov. 21, the Sonics stars engaged in a full-blown donnybrook that drew blood in front of the team’s offices at 190 Queen Anne Ave. N. When Ellis emerged from an elevator in the building’s lobby, he spotted McDaniel standing in front of the building. The two argued heatedly and punches were thrown while a Sonics’ employee tried to restrain the pair. As they went at it, the fight moved up the street. When it ended, the Sonics suspended Ellis for five days with no pay, but took no action against McDaniel, who said, “We’ve played seven games without him and God knows how many more we’ll have to play without him. All his practice shots are short anyhow.”........and.....there's THIS --- Ricky Pierce vs. Gary Payton, 1994: During the playoffs, Payton got into a major harangue with Pierce and threatened to pull a gun on him (both players were given to intermittent bursts of moronic behavior) at halftime of a game, and coach George Karl took the threat seriously. “The players told me they had guns in their bags — it was, ‘I’ll kill your family.’”

January 9,1972....The Bucks end the Lakers 33 game win streak and Kareem pops Happy Hairston good in the head with his fist after feeling that HH had undercut his legs under the basket.....Both players remained in the game....business as usual.....apparently Hairston was known to be something of a cheap shot artist and many (some Laker teammates included) felt he got what he had coming to him....
