Did the Washington Capitols rise from the ashes of the NBA?

Postby Stan Syckes » Thu Dec 06, 2012 11:33 pm

Does anyone have any information about whether or not the 1952 Washington Capitols in the ABL is the same team as the Washington Capitols that folded in the 1951 NBA season? Here's the history I've found thus far:

The first instance of the Washington Capitols is in the 1945 ABL season. Before the 1945 season can be completed, however, the Capitols move to Patterson and become the Patterson Crescents. The Crescents remain in Patterson and play in the ABL through the 1951 season.

Next, a team pops up as the Washington Capitols in the 1947 BAA season. As the Patterson Crescents are still going strong in the ABL, this has to be a completely separate and distinct franchise. This new squad continues to compete as the Washington Capitols until the 1951 NBA season, when they folded mid-season (1/9/1951).

Strangely, a THIRD Washington Capitols team rears its head the next year (1952), this time BACK in the ABL. I don't know if this team is the same franchise as the Washington Capitols that folded in the NBA the previous year or a completely new team. The 1952 ABL Caps and the 1951 NBA Caps DO share a few players. Dick and Tommy O'Keefe play for both squads. And Dick Schnittker does, as well, though it's unclear if he started 1952 for the Caps or came from the 1952 Lakers first (I'm assuming the latter as he ended the 1951 season on the Lakers team).

Any information anyone could provide would be very much appreciated!

Hi:

They are the same team. Chapter 2 of my book, The Bullets, The Wizards and Washington, DC Basketball tells the story of that Capitols team.

Go here:

or to Scarecrow Press site at:
