Devastating Injuries

Postby Robert Bradley » Fri Feb 26, 2010 3:58 am

What would you consider to be the devastating injuries in basketball history? I'm talking about injuries to great players that ended careers or greatly curtailed them (not players who suffered chronic less serious injuries like Kevin Johnson and his notorious hamstrings).

My top five possible all-time greats who had their careers curtailed by injuries -

Maurice Stokes, ROC - 1958 - post-traumatic encephalopathy
Bill Walton, POR - 1974 - ankle
Tiny Archibald, KCK - 1977 - foot
Ralph Sampson, HOU - 1986 - back
Grant Hill, ORL - 2000 - ankle

Stokes has been discussed many times here - he was perhaps the forerunner of the modern big man - a great rebounder and passer who could also score.

Walton was perhaps the greatest collegiate player ever, and anchor of the 1977 champion Blazer team.

Archibald went from nearly unstoppable (once leading the league in both scoring and assists) to merely pretty good.

Sampson was a three-time all-American, rookie of the year and member of the 'Twin Towers' who ruined his knees playing after his injury.

Hill was in some people minds among the best players in the game before his injury nightmares - and although he's healthy now he's a mere shadow of his former self.

Off the top, a few who had career changing injuries: Ron Harper, Penny Hardaway, Andrew Toney, Clark Kellogg, Geoff Petrie, Doug Collins, Danny Manning, Allen Houston, Jeff Ruland, Alonzo Mourning ( illness) and we'll have to see how far TMac can come back.

And of course Sabonis, whose career changing injuries came before he played in the Assn

You could create a big list using just the Clippers. In addition to the already-mentioned Harper and Manning, Derek Smith had advanced to all-star level when his career was curtailed by I think a knee injury. Michael Brooks was not as clearly advancing to all-star status but was an okay young NBA starter; I forget what it was that ended his career.

And though they were on the downside of their careers, Marques Johnson and Norm Nixon had career-ending injuries with the Clips.

Even without the Clippers connection, Bill Walton is synonymous with injuries, but put Walton and the Clips together and you know you're in trouble: he played in an average of a little over 42 games per season with them (compared to 45 with the Celtics and over 52 with the Trailblazers).

Other teams: hard to say where Todd MacCulloch's career was headed but he was appearing to be ready for a solid NBA career when foot injuries derailed him. Ronnie Lester I think suffered his injury while still in college but was looking like a prime NBA prospect.

Am I mis-remembering, or did Wes Unseld suffer some sort of injury which reduced his mobility for the rest of his career? Didn't stop him from Hall of Fame status obviously but it may've made him less great than he would've been.

I suppose someone could (or maybe has) ask Larry Bird directly, but he shattered one of his fingers in a softball game just prior to joining the NBA, and could never close that hand completely after that. There were concerns about how it would affect his game. Obviously as with Unseld he carved out a Hall of Fame career, but maybe he could've been even greater if not for that injury?

A slightly different category, but it's hard not to think of Reggie Lewis, Drazen Petrovic, and (still another different category) Len Bias.

There were concerns that Terry Cummings' heart condition would derail his NBA career. On the one hand, he had a good long career, but on the other hand he never did become a superstar so maybe he was affected. Cuttino Mobley's career still had a few years left when heart disease caused him to decide to retire; Ronny Turiaf probably wasn't headed for superstardom but having to have heart surgery didn't help. And of course there's Lewis and Hank Gathers. Among former players, Jerry West's front office career was ended partly due to his heart condition, and although as with Unseld and Bird it didn't stop him from the Hall of Fame, it sounds like it was serious enough that it may have hindered his ability to play.

I'm still amazed that Pete Maravich was able to play an almost-complete (he quit when he still had some years left) NBA career without knowing that he had a heart condition that could, and finally did, kill him instantaneously and without warning.

Speaking of the slightly different category concerning death, Ben Wilson could be included into that. He eventually would have been an NBA star if he wasn't shot and killed during his senior year of high school.

And, don't forget Sam Bowie. He would have been a good center if he didn't have his injury problems.

Michael T: you can add to your Clippers list - Shaun Livingston who seemed on the verge when he went down with that devastating injury.

Career shortened guys like Cliff Robertson, Calvin Natt, Roy Hinson and Ernie DiGregorio come to mind. Marvin Webster was never the same. Oops you have Webster

Many thanks for the Bob Rule mention...He was my favorite player as a kid growing up in Seattle.....The various times the late Seattle SuperSonics did some sort of Legends or Team History event over the years they never were able to track down "The Golden Rule" or even know of his whereabouts....The Achilles injury and subsequent re-injury, during his rehab a month or two later did him in...At least there is some footage of him in the 1970 NBA All Star Game in Philadelphia....He was picked to replace Nate Thurmond....What a thrill that was, to have TWO Sonics in that game, Lenny Wilkens, then our player coach and Rule...Good times, Great days.

In the list above I chose to list the injuries that started the decline in their careers - I had a difficult time deciding whether to list Sampson's back injury ir first knee injury, but decided to go with the knee injury instead.

Also, I chose not to include injuries to players who were already in serious decline, or injuries that players fully recovered from (like Wilt's knee injury in 1969).

Archibald and Nixon suffered a double-whammy - both had one devastating injury followed by another while still returning from the first.

I tried to limit myself to All-Star calibre players, with the exception of a few young stars (DiGregorio, Kellogg and Oden)

Would Mutombo fall into the career enders? He was injured in his last game with Houston.

it depends on your definition. i was thinking of players who were in their prime, and mutombo was well beyond his at this point.

What about Zydrunas Ilgauskas? He missed entire rookie season 1996-97, then played all 82 games in his second season, missed almost all 1998-99 season, 58 games in season 2000-01 and 20 games in season 2001-02.

http://www.nba.com/heat/roster/heat_pla ... _1011.html

Robert, I think he should be on your list.

Ilgauskas came back to play at the level he played at before getting hurt, so he doesn't make the list either. We're talking about guys like Clark Kellogg who had a knee injury that basically ended his career, or Nate Archibald who had injuries which diminished his skills for the rest of his career.

Re: Devastating Injuries

It depends on your criteria, some for these guys still managed to be productive and others were never stars but

Terry Cummings: Aside from the heart problems mentioned Terry’s career can be split into two “halves” based on his summer ’92 injury. Sure he was already on the downswing but he went from a 2nd banana to a role player after that point.

Kevin McHale: Maybe not “devastating” insofar as McHale remained one of the game’s premier players but in 86-87 he was playing at an MVP candidacy level and might have had a chance at it if not for breaking his foot (he ended up 4th), and never played at that level again.

John “Hot Plate” Williams: Slightly indirect here and it might have happened anyway but ’86 13th pick improved each year up to 88-89 when he was (per Rick Barry’s Pro Basketball Scouting report following that season on the average score – rather than the “overall” rating given – the tied 12th best player in the league) and one of the game’s most complete players. The next year (already a little overweight) he got injured and missed most of the season then summer ’90 misses some rehab sessions, father suffers stroke, close friend dies in boating accident, he quits rehab entirely and ends up a blimp with the aforementioned nickname given by Pete Vecsey.

Phil Ford is another of those David Thompson types where a combination of drugs and injuries did him in.

Bobby Hurley was a great college player who never really got a chance in the big leagues after his truck accident.

Chris Mihm became an average NBA center then according to Wikipedia
“He missed six games due to a sprained right shoulder and missed 17 regular season games plus with playoffs due to a severely sprained right ankle. In the next season, he missed all the games because he was recovering from his right ankle surgeries.”
And after that point was useless.

Joel Przybilla: Struggled with chronic injuries but found a niche (and adequate health) for a little while and since then (2009) hasn’t been effective. If he isn’t coming back (and he’s not employed at the moment) then I’d consider that a career ender.

Anfernee Hardaway could be right up there with Robert’s top 5, through his first 3 years he was comparable to Magic (substantially less rebounds but, had some advantages especially looking at advanced metrics which account for pace, giving Penny a higher assist% as well as lower turnover%) http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... 02&y2=1982 , and as well as being twice all-NBA (1st team) and coming off a monster 3rd year (3rd in MVP vote). He then played in the 96 Olympics, Shaq bolted and then come this injuries, he missed 23 games in 96-97 and regressed a little. Then after he blew out his knee the next year he was never the same.

Lionel Simmons: More of a chronic injuries guy but went from 2nd in the 90-91 ROTY vote and acclaim as one of the games most complete players (albeit without a jumpshot) to ceasing to be a contributor at 25 and out of the league at 28).

Shawn Kemp’s injured pride? After that Mcilvaine signing he seemed to lose his motivation.

And though they were on the downside of their careers, Marques Johnson and Norm Nixon had career-ending injuries with the Clips.

The exact diagnosis is still unknown AFAIK, but it appears that the Clippers' Curse Continues: Chauncey Billups may've ruptured his Achilles tendon, which at his age could put him in the category with Marques and Norm, former all-star caliber players whose suffered career-ending injuries with the Clips.
