NBA/ABA Players who Played Overseas

Postby Robert Bradley » Mon Sep 06, 2010 7:32 pm

As you probably know by now, I love lists. Here is one I started which included NBA and ABA players who played overseas.

I decided that a list of all players would probably be next to impossible so I decided to concentrate on a list of players who played 2,000 minutes in a season or had long careers and multiple seasons approaching 2,000 minutes.

Additions and corrections are welcome (and undoubtedly needed) as usual.

I threw Tom McMillen in there too, mainly for historical significance more than anything else.

also a (very) brief history of how it all started -

In 1965 the Italian Federation decided to allow its teams in the Italian National League to add one foreign player each. In the first season 11 of the 12 teams in the league took advantage by hiring Americans, with the other club hiring a Yugoslavian. The Americans who played in the league in 1965-66 included Bill Bradley [Simmenthal Milano], Frank Granat [Stella Azzurra Roma], Rodney Hill [Aleisa Bologna], Warren Isaac [All Oneasa Milano], Pete Jones [Victoria Libertas Pesaro], Toby Kimball [Ingis Varese], Doug Moe [Unione Sportiva Petraca Padova], Skip Thoren [Simmenthal Milano] and Ted Werner [Candy Bologna]. American Tony Gennari also signed with Ingis Varese, who contended that he was of Italian ancestry, but the federation ruled that he was an American.

I know Shawn Kemp signed to play in Italy in 2008, but returned without playing any games for the team. Did he sign to play for a team in 2009-10? I haven't found anything about him playing there last year.

Premiata Montegranaro. Scored 3 points for them in a friendly game.

In 2009 he toured Europe with a team of former NBA "stars", led by Dennis Rodman.

EDIT: There's the fascinating story of the "draft of foreign players" held in Italy in the early eighties.

Miles Aiken (who has a curious story regarding his departure from Real Madrid) is usually said to have left Fides Partenope Napoli in 1970, but I found an online newspaper story introducing him as player-coach still in Partenope in 1972.

http://hemeroteca.elmundodeportivo.es/p ... 7/pdf.html

After he retired, he became a military trainer for NATO troops stationed in UK, where he also coached the Milton Keynes team and the UK national team during the 70s.

EDIT: Note that at least Brabender, Rogers and D'Antoni changed nationality during their careers.

From a recent Cliff Meely interview:

JT: From 1976-1980, you played and coached professionally in Italy and France. What did you learn from the experience, and how did it compare to the NBA?

CM: It was great in Italy; I played with Willie Sojourner in the 2nd-division and we made it all the way to the Italian league title game before losing.

The Italian version of Wikipedia has Meely joining Sebastiani Rieti in 1977, but I know with the nature of Wikipedia it could be wrong. A lot of times they will give you a date like "1977" but it means the later part of the 1976-77 season.

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Meely

It also only lists him as playing two seasons on the Sebastiani Rieti page -

http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMG_Sebastiani_Rieti

Of course this doesn't rule out the possibility that he played somewhere else in Europe in 1976-77 and I just didn't get listed, or that he actually played three for Sebastiani Rieti.

Meely arrived at Rieti for the 1977-78 season, you can find his profile in the Rieti website:

http://www.basketrieti.com/personaggio.aspx?id=16

And also a summary of the season:

http://www.basketrieti.com/campionato.aspx?id=16

Legabasket's web site shows that Meely played for Rieti in both 1977-78 and 1978-79, then for Eldorado Roma in 1980-81:

Meely attended the Lakers' preseason camp in 1976 and was waived on September 29.

I found an article from The Long Beach Independent in 1976 with Bill Sharman claiming that about 100 players were out of work in 1976 mainly because of the ABA teams that folded before and after the 1975-76 season (certainly an exaggeration San Diego, Utah, Virginia, St. Louis and Kentucky didn't have 20 players each). Still, there were probably 50 additional players out looking for work and Meely may have been one not to land a job right away.

I don't know if Larry McNeill should qualify; but, if he does (top NBA MPGs - 1749 & 1613), he played for the Winston Kings in the Philippines in 1983

And Vincent Askew (1690, 1721, 1725 NBA mpg): from Wikipedia: "Askew also played in Italy for Serie A team Arimo Bologna (1989) and Serie A2 teams Emmezeta Udine (1990–1991) and Sidis Reggio Emilia (1992)." I believe he was also an import player in the Philippines

You can find his stats in Italy here:

As a curiosity, in the summer of 1989 he was signed by Real Madrid, then coached by his mentor George Karl, to play alongside Drazen Petrovic who was then in the middle of difficult negotiations with the Portland Trail Blazers. I have the pics of the media day in preseason and both Askew and Petrovic are there.

However, a couple weeks later Petrovic jumped to the NBA and Real Madrid cut Askew claiming there was something wrong with his surgically repaired knee. My suspicion back then was that the departure of Petrovic changed their plans and they wanted a different kind of player. I am not sure which kind of player, though, because they trotted in & out a ton of them that season, Karl even had Dennis Nutt come out of retirement to play a few games with Ben McDonald. Then they had Michael Anderson and Anthony Frederick, and finally after Fernando Martín died they brought in José "Piculín" Ortiz.

Worst. Season. Ever.
