Re: STICKY -- Linkage

I'm up and running on a new blog covering DC sports. Right now it's more Redskins focused, although I've had some Wizards content up the past few days. I'll surely be doing more stat-related stuff in the future. Broom on the Warpath I can't seem to find a RSS feed anywhere. Do you know if you have ...

Re: Weighting Performances

I used SPSS to get those results. If you downloaded R and you want to use those results of the regression in order to make a prediction I would recommended ridge regression. I just wrote a quick script for your problem, that is the result (lambda was 17, found via cross validation): (Intercept) 20....

You might find more assistance at the regular APBR message boards: http://apbr.org/forum/index.php

They have more of a historical focus there.

Re: Question on Individual Possessions

By my estimate, there have been about 200 missed AND1 this season. There have been 18,326 made field goals. Is that not rare? Edit: I should also add that of those 200 missed shots we should only expect around 10% of them to be rebounded by the offense, if I recall correctly studies that have been ...

A made FG along with an And 1 FTA is a "rare event"? By my estimate, there have been about 200 missed AND1 this season. There have been 18,326 made field goals. Is that not rare? Edit: I should also add that of those 200 missed shots we should only expect around 10% of them to be rebounde...

Re: Question on Individual Possessions

For individuals, Ed Kupfer found this linear-weights style possession estimator: POSS = 0.74 * FGA + 0.44 * FTA + 0.25 * OR + 0.25 * AST + TO Points produced could also be estimated: PtsProd = 1.45 * 2Made + 2.2 * 3Made + FTMade + 0.6 * OR + 0.6 * AST Btw, it's been 7 years and that whole thread I ...

Re: Correlation of FT attempts with other boxscore stats.

Every player has a unique stat profile, and so each case will be unique in its 'order of importance'. I didn't attempt to un-confound the minutes effect. I don't know if just playing 3000 minutes and literally getting zeroes in other categories will get you 160 FTA. Probably not. What about seconds...

Re: NBA draft prospects.

Basically what I am doing is taking specific stats that I feel say something about a given player. The theory behind which stats I choose has come kind of been a combination of what I feel, what I have read, and insight I have gained from personal contacts. I started these formulas a few years ago ...

Any progress in harvesting anything useful from RSS feed readers Gabe? Was not aware you/anyone was expecting anything from me??? I use Google Reader to read the posts on the board... it allows me to skip over stuff I'm not interested in. If anyone else reads the board through Google Reader (or bas...

Re: Any Thoughts on Chad Ford's "Grantland" piece?

It would be a bit more spreadsheet manipulation hassle than I am willing to go thru right now to find the 'median WS per 82 games guys' for each quartile but I can find and will list in the above data the 'WS per 82 games' of the 'median guy by total career WinShares' for each quartile and maybe th...

Re: Index of thread topics (thru June 8, 2011)

Why didn't you just take the RSS feed from the old site and harvest that for all the old threads? Most feed readers (like Google Reader, for example) keep all the old feeds and are searchable.
