Re: Things that could go wrong next season for Rockets

Yeah, certainly towards the bottom of my 7 or 8 team 'contender' group (iffy on including Denver).

Re: Things that could go wrong next season for Rockets

Harden/Westbrook fit and play from the forward positions are the big 2 I'd be worried about for them. Tucker fading is a very big danger for them.

Re: Early 2019-2020 season commentary

I don't get why they didn't seem to value Aminu. Combined with the Nurkic injury I'm very worried about their defense. If they get Whiteside at his best they may be okay, but that's a bit of a dicey proposition.

Re: 2019-20 team win projection contest

A couple early thoughts on 538's #s: -I'm surprised Cleveland is that low, maybe counting on a Love trade or something? If he's reasonably healthy I'd expect closer to 30 than 20. -Not sure the Bulls jump quite that much, but wouldn't be surprised if they're one of the largest risers from last seaso...

Why do you suggest only looking at later picks?

Re: Early 2019-2020 season commentary

Moderately happy with the Jazz's trade for Conley, think we may have gave up 1 minor asset more than was necessary. Still need at least one more rotation guy going into next season. Currently have the room MLE. Rumors they're trying to buy up into a pick into the 30's.

No idea what to expect from these guys at this point, reports are just all over the place.

Re: 2018-19 lineup analysis

Lineup usage may or may not be an issue for the Jazz, but it's hard to say how much in light of the talent disparity between them and the Warriors/Rockets. Also unfortunately had their fair share of injury issues in the playoffs.

Re: 2019-20 team win projection contest

Not a stat head, so can't help too much on the details, but for the 10 player bit I would say that you may be able to get away with a lower number than that (if that at all simplifies it, it's possible there's no real difference between running it with 1 or 100), in my experience you can usually exp...

Re: Early 2019-2020 season commentary

Have you read their about page links to theory and code? Or is your opinion just based on player estimates specific or in general? The article on theory is sort a podghodge of everything they could think to say. It is more broad than deep. I read through the theory page (agree it's just to sell the...

Re: NCAA->NBA ML using raw text of historical scouting reports: done!

Looks interesting for sure, I'm sure I'll think of more questions, but one first one - how do you handle players with negatives in a stat like WS? It's just negative. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Just means a player contributed net losses to his team through his performance (eg turnovers, fouls, missed shots, etc.). ...

Re: Early 2019-2020 season commentary

No idea where to ask this one, but did anyone ever figure out what was up with that Gitlab 'RAPM' dataset from the guy at UCLA? I'm seeing it cited a fair amount recently and I'm ~98% sure it's junk, it'd be nice to be able to tell people why but I know no python. https://basketball-analytics.gitlab...

Man, if only I could short the Knicks.

Pacers deserve a far better number than that.

Re: 2019 Finals: Warriors - Raptors

Yeah, I generally didn't feel great about Kerr's coaching in this one at all. Bit bummed no game 7, but a good game to close it out.
