Re: Factors Determining Production in Basketball
Question: Are you advocating that these three factors - points, blocks and FDR - NOT be combined in a single metric? I think that is the purpose of FDR, to find players who add things other than points, and to provide not a single metric, but three so decision makers can weigh up competing interests...

Re: Berri Changes Value of Defensive Rebounds in WP
And an ad hominem - wicked! I love how you mentioned a fallacy in a post that was an attack not on the work, but on where the work was published - an ad hominem attack. I love that sort of thing (truly I do). But pointing out that Berri is in fact publishing his articles in low impact journals makes...

Re: Berri Changes Value of Defensive Rebounds in WP
Wow - using a fallacy in a post that quotes fallacies. Like it!Well, that's why smart people recommend using RAPM instead.
Can we get some numbers up in here rather than a wall of words?

Me too!
What I find shocking is the supreme lack of numbers used to critique Wins Produced. There is a awful lot of talking, but no one actually attacking the numbers. That I'd like to see!

Re: Berri Changes Value of Defensive Rebounds in WP
You are talking a strawman Really? I don't think I am (either talking or using a strawman argument :) hehe). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man A straw man is a component of an argument and is an informal fallacy based on misrepresentation of an opponent's position So the statement that I respo...

Re: Berri Changes Value of Defensive Rebounds in WP
I just think it's not consistent to say that A. box score events like rebounds have concrete, consistent value in terms of wins and losses Thinking doesn't either make it so or not make it so. Evidence does. Do you have some evidence that rebounds don't have some concrete value? Asked another way, ...

Re: Berri Changes Value of Defensive Rebounds in WP
In any case, I wonder if criticisms like this are "orders of magnitude" problems, or if they are minor issues. Seems like all criticisms are laid out as "orders of magnitude" problems, but surely that isn't always the case? Well, to me it rather seems like that you don't underst...

Re: Berri Changes Value of Defensive Rebounds in WP
@motherwell Dallas does use WP48 and not adjusted +- as much anymore. ;-) Hey, thanks for quoting me, but you know, maybe provide some context. Specifically: When they signed Marcin Gortat to a contract – a good contract for a guy that never played many minutes – the only metric that “rated” him wa...

Re: Shot Types With and Without You
Do you rate shot value? An open 18 footer is different to a "Shannon Brown", aka an 18 footer that gets blocked.
In either case, I'd be interested to see stats like that.

Memphis team Units [bug]
I tried this: http://basketballvalue.com/teamunits.ph ... 1&team=MEM and it doesn't seem to show any stats. Can anyone help? I love that site, it's great BTW.

Re: Referreed Journals
No idea what you have read in Evan's post ... Berri might be an expert in economics, but he is hardly an expert in basketball (or basketball stats for that matter). I'm not sure at your confusion, because I actually quoted what I was responding to. But my apologies for not being clear. http://en.wi...

I think the difference here is that academics are usually domain experts. I don't think that;s true. Steven Levitt isn't a "domain expert" in either crime or abortion, to use perhaps the most popularly famous economics example. Emily Oster (TED talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/emily_oster_f...
