Re: This Whole Shooting at the End of the Shotclock Thing

Is optical tracking data essentially just for NBA team use only? I.e. do independent researchers have access / are using it?

Re: SSAC Papers

Hi,

Quick question: do people have thoughts about a good metric for determining the best shooter in the NBA? Simply range/spread seems to get rid of (some) information about efficiency with cutting it as simply asking if a location is below or above 1.

Re: putting some math to the problem of shot selection

Hi again, I believe these to be drafts of the eventual plots, but I have not yet correctly accounted for putbacks from offensive rebounds though. The first is x = 3 and the second x = 4. You have to look closely to see that they differ. http://www.people.carleton.edu/~coughlim/Basketball/MATLAB/delt...

Re: putting some math to the problem of shot selection

Also, "As suggested above, for each second of shot clock time, the probability of a turnover occurring prior to the next "look" (TO t+x, where x = 3 or 4)." Is this just essentially taking the plot of turnover probability as a function of time and for each point, summing it with ...

Re: putting some math to the problem of shot selection

I can do so, but I don't quite have a handle on (1) yet. Can you write down an equation like you have for the other 2? Math speak helps me!

Thank you,
Michael

Re: Data on Technical Foul Shots

It would help to know what exactly you wanted. I.e. I want a text file with every player who has taken a technical foul shot in the last 5 years, with the number of those shots and how many were made. Or something like that.

Re: putting some math to the problem of shot selection

Hi all, I have spent some time revamping / editing my code, and I feel a little more confident in the output, but again, its probably not perfect. http://www.people.carleton.edu/~coughlim/Basketball/MATLAB/shot_efficiency.png http://www.people.carleton.edu/~coughlim/Basketball/MATLAB/rebound_efficie...

Re: SSAC Papers

Hi, I have spent some time thinking about how Professor Goldsberry creates his metric for how to evaluate shooting range and such. To me, it could make the most sense to cluster different player's pockets of shots together. I think these clusters should be adaptive to different players, as they will...

Re: SSAC Papers

Hi, Number of 3x3 squares (with at least 50 shots) with points per possession below 0.9, 0.85, and 0.8. The columns are playerID, player name, average number of shots in the squares, average efficiency, and the number of squares. 1. 0.9 13,Al Jefferson,7.478571e+01,0.388707,14 380,Kobe Bryant,6.7333...

Re: SSAC Papers

Hi, My analysis is not nearly as thorough as Professor Goldberry's, so please take these with a grain of salt, but I have some preliminary results: With a box size of 3 x 3 ft, I have found the top and bottom 10 spots for players with at least 50 attempts from one spot for four different intervals: ...

Re: putting some math to the problem of shot selection

Hi, Sadly the data I have does not specify the shot location where a shooting foul occurs, so I am unable to account for that differential with the data I have. Efficiency for shots within intervals of 0-4, 4-15, 15-22, 22-50 within elapsed shot-clock intervals of 0-5,5-10,10-15,15-20,20-24: 0.6518 ...

Re: putting some math to the problem of shot selection

Hi, To answer xkonk's question about long-2 efficiency, I made a quick plot from the data from http://www.basketballgeek.com/data/, calculating the efficiency for four different intervals vs. shot-clock times. http://i41.tinypic.com/207p5y8.png From these data, I calculate a mean efficiency for the ...
