Why are possessions et al. estimated using crude formulae?
Why are possessions estimated using crude formulae, instead of being properly and precisely counted? For example, Basketball-Reference (http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/glossary.html) uses 0.5 * ((Tm FGA + 0.4 * Tm FTA - 1.07 * (Tm ORB / (Tm ORB + Opp DRB)) * (Tm FGA - Tm FG) + Tm TOV) + (O...

Re: True Shooting Attempts and % (TSA, TS%)
Hm I don't think it's just "one example" of an advanced stat that could be improved. Here's why. 1) TS% is a concept/idea that is sufficiently simple that even the casual fan can quickly grasp AND agree is a very sensible definition of the term "true shooting %". 2) And we have a...

True Shooting Attempts and % (TSA, TS%)
I'm a little bewildered by the somewhat arbitrary use of 0.44 in the TSA formula: (From basketball-reference.com) True Shooting Attempts; the formula is FGA + 0.44 * FTA. True Shooting Percentage; the formula is PTS / (2 * TSA). But assuming that we have play-by-play data (which we do), why are we u...

Re: Modelling the mvp voters
Your "Year" appears to be off by one? i.e. e.g. what you have as 2000 should be 2001, etc.

Re: Clutchest Superstars Playoffs 2001-2012
Thanks for the helpful comments, I shall try to incorporate your ideas into further analyses when I have time. I do not think this little list I have produced is a definitive ranking of the clutchest superstars. I started this little exercise, only as an attempt to convince a friend who bought into ...

Clutchest Superstars Playoffs 2001-2012
I'm sure stuff like this has been done many times before, but in any case... Playoffs. 4th Quarter or any Overtime. 1 minute left in the period. Consider Field Goal Attempts to tie or take the lead.* Data from Playoffs 2001-2012 (through May 29th 2012). Restrict attention to players who’ve made the ...

Play-by-play 2000 and before
Where can I find Play-by-play for seasons 2000 and before? Basketball-reference.com has them only to as far back as the 2001 season.
Thanks for any help.
