Who cares if it's actually the real Roland or not. What was written is a legitimate criticism.

Re: Flaws with RAPM
So, just to be clear, we're talking here about the effect of random variation in free throw shooting outcomes biasing (R)APM estimates, both offensive and defensive, right? I must say that my initial reaction was that this should be a rather small effect, but upon further consideration, I think I'm...

4) I really wish intentional fouls were kept officially because we'd have to guess when they were happening. But you can always weigh possessions less when the lead is too big. They are tracked. Look at 1:38 remaining in the 4th period of this game: http://www.nba.com/games/20140519/OKCSAS/gameinfo...

Re: Coach RAPM
(if one acknowledges that there are some minor, positive spillover effects of O on D) Yes yes, it's only very minor. After all, the game clock stops and both teams reset after every change of possession, and the notion of "fast break" or "transition" baskets does not exist on th...

Re: Looking at this year's fta/fga
First, I sorted the players by the total number of games they played from most to least. Unfortunately, the only way I can figure out to get this data is by hand typing in all the information. As I mentioned before, I was bored at work so at this point I was only able to enter in the top 125 player...

Re: Win Probability Calculator Tool
Phew! So glad you finally got around that pesky issue of sample size limitations. You know, that one that has confounded mathematicians everywhere for hundreds of years (except for Wayne Winston, of course). Thanks. For my next trick, I plan on squaring the circle. Sarcasm aside, small sample size ...

Re: Win Probability Calculator Tool
My approach is using LOESS, which tries to smooth everything. I tighten up the smoothing window as things get closer to the end of the game, but it looks like I might still be borrowing too many data points from nearby game times and margins. I would argue that the underlying outcomes aren't themse...

Re: Basketball Operations Analytics Jobs at the NBA!!!
I really, really wish I had some Excel skills. I'd love to do this sort of thing. I guess I'll have to train myself in it, so the next time such an opportunity comes along, I'll feel like I can give it a shot. I feel like the only people who get shots at those sorts of things are: 1) IVY League (or...

Re: Dataset: NBA Schedules Date and Time
Hi Everyone, I recently made a post about a dataset with NBA attendance per game records. I now have a second request for help that I'm hoping is easier. I am currently a student undertaking a pretty significant econometrics project. I'm looking to get access to past NBA seasons' schedules from 200...

Re: Demystifying Ridge Regression
I wish you hadn't posted that. That is a good explanation, but the maths really doesn't matter like you suggest, and understanding matrix algebra is good, but not everything. I do understand all of that, as do a great many, but many more don't, and lots of people don't have time to re-learn or newl...

Re: json NBA data feeds?
Hi all, Does anyone have a good source for NBA data in json format? By searching online I've come across the NBA source that another user posted: http://data.nba.com/5s/json/cms/noseason/scoreboard/20121126/games.json http://data.nba.com/10s/json/cms/noseason/game/20121126/0021200013/pbp_1.json Unf...

Wait, so you're saying that using more information can confer an advantage? No way!!!deepak wrote:Not sure which version of RAPM you looked at, but if its the version using the previous year as a prior wouldn't it be at an advantage, since it is inherently incorporating multiple years of information?

Re: One Year RAPM and Weighted Ridge Regression
Still I couldn't find "an easy" way to get that data ready for the regression. It looks I should seperate the predictors(players) for defense and offense and use both offensive and defensive rating as the response. This. This is what's missing with APM. Not regularization or discussing th...
