Re: Anybody working on any exciting projects for the fall?

My guess: it's not about teams using RAPM differently, I'm guessing that the same would be true if we used PER or WS or other box-score stats. Two factors, IMO: 1. Teams have realized that overpaying FAs isn't a terrible way to accumulate assets, because you don't have to give up players or picks in...

Re: Anybody working on any exciting projects for the fall?

It would be interesting to check if RAPM - current, next yr or next contract salary correlation is higher today than 5 years ago. If you can attract a bigger viewer site to showcase the win projection contest, if might garner more entries and / or more effort. I was bored, so I just looked at your ...

Re: Adjusting pace

J.E.: I think Pace does a good job of one of its goals, which is to give us an idea of how to adjust the stats up or down based on the number of possessions. What is up in the air, IMO, is if it does a good job in describing how a team plays. This is where it falls short to me. Schtevie: I like how ...

Adjusting pace

Probably the most accepted change in how NBA people look at stats is adjusting for pace across the board: most serious analysis happens right now on a per possession basis. This is good. But the basic calculation of pace (simply, average # of possessions per game) itself has always frustrated me, es...

Re: BasketballValue Matchup files

Just a thought... maybe it's missing team defensive rebounds?

Re: Changing the Jazz?

So I'm managing editor of Salt City Hoops, the ESPN Truehoop affiliate of the Jazz. As you'd imagine, we think about these questions a lot. The biggest single problem for the team, and it's been this way for the last few years, is that they have no idea how to defend the pick and roll. It's inconsis...

Re: New NBA Analytics Site

Question for you: How soon will these box scores be posted after the game? These would be really helpful to writing a post-game recap.

Re: Shot Location Database

I used kpascual's NBAscrape tool (https://github.com/kpascual/nbascrape) to put together a database from this past season (13-14) with this data from NBA.com. Because, well, why not, I've uploaded the result of that scraping, put into an Excel file, on Salt City Hoops: http://saltcityhoops.com/wp-co...

Re: BR Defensive Ratings????

I wrote a post on this once: http://www.slcdunk.com/2013/1/31/3939352/the-offbeat-a-quick-note-on-individual-defensive-ratings Basically: BR's DRTG is the Basketball on Paper DRtg, which works significantly better if you have the stats that Dean Oliver wishes for in his defensive outline. If you don...

Talking about data acquisition

To me, the hardest part in doing Basketball Analytics right now is data manipulation. I have enough of a stats/math background that I have various tools that I'd love to run numbers through, but actually getting that data in a format I can work with (generally just a simple CSV will work) is hard to...
