Re: Basketball Analytics Open Course at NYU

The Basketball Analytics open course at NYU will run again this fall, from October 22 to November 19, taught again by Jason Rosenfeld, Director of Basketball Analytics for the NBA league office. I figured some people here would be interested. http://www.scps.nyu.edu/academics/course_detail.html?id=T...

Re: Modeling the free agent market operation

and a reference to a presentation at UNC by Nik Oza. Nik, is a link to this available? I haven't looked into the value of timing free agency and didn't present at UNC, but I think this is the presentation you were talking about: https://www.dropbox.com/s/crh524sjyiolymh/GeorgetownBasketballAnalytic...

Syllabus is not out yet, but might be fairly soon.

There is no online option for the course as of now, but anyone who can take it at NYU can sign up.

Re: ESPN/J.E.: Rookies provide no impact at all

How can that be the reason, if that "That being said, many rookies are indeed worse than a minimum salary player (roughly 2 pts per 200 possessions below avg)." is true? The rookie prior has an effect on the value for the individual player (some may be "overrated" other might be "underrated" due to...

Re: ESPN/J.E.: Rookies provide no impact at all

All of this is mostly due to the rookie prior in RPM. That being said, many rookies are indeed worse than a minimum salary player (roughly 2 pts per 200 possessions below avg).

Re: 14 Year Average RAPM Dataset

What do you mean?
Is there a scoring margin variable in the model?

i.e. if Team A is up 10 and scores at a certain rate per possession, the player ratings would be different than if Team A is down 10 and scores at the same rate per possession

Re: 14 Year Average RAPM Dataset

Is this adjusted for margin? Would affect Ginobili's rating in a big way.

Steals, RAPM and Ignoring Position

A response to FiveThirtyEight's steal articles. It's really important to take into account position when it comes to steals and defensive value!

Re: Well, well, well...

Here I've assumed an avg game is 48.4 minutes: There is 1 win per 484 player-minutes. The ratio (3.53/5.00) is .706 WAR per game. It looks as though players above replacement level are getting credit for all wins, and sub-R players are removing almost 30% of the total --?? More evidence that actual...

Re: Well, well, well...

WAR can be thought of as reflecting the estimated impact of RPM x Possessions, by answering the counterfactual question: If all of this player's possessions this season had been taken instead by one or more players with the xRAPM impact of the typical "replacement-level" player (estimated by Daniel...
