The GOAT debate
Summary Chamberlain (9), Jabbar (9), Jordan (7), and James (10) are the only players in NBA/ABA history to finish with at least 7 MVP seasons (MVP seasons = single season combination regular and post season performance determined by value shares metric) Jordan and James are the only players in NBA/A...

Re: League expansion and the dilution of competition
The NBA expanded to 22 teams in season ending 1977. The 18 NBA franchises from 1975-76 saw "no" change in their net efficiency ratings in 1976-77 despite adding "four" new teams. Actually you are talking about the merger with the ABA, in which 3 ABA teams were dissolved and 4 in...

Re: League expansion and the dilution of competition
There were 14 teams in the 1969-70 NBA (call it 1970), and 3 expansion teams arrived in 1971. The 14 teams that averaged 0.0 (naturally) in point differential in 1970 would avg +2.0 in 1971 This was in spite of losing some players in the expansion draft. Why would teams so weakened tend to do bette...

Re: League expansion and the dilution of competition
Increased productivity indicates dilution of competition. If all the centers in the league averaged 13 rebounds per 36 minutes in 1970 -- and these same players average 14 Reb/36 in 1971 -- it's unlikely they all (on avg, as a group) suddenly became better rebounders. Most likely, it's because the ...

Re: The biggest 'Myth' about the 1990s Chicago Bulls
You lost me when you said Kukoc led Croatia in 1992. The name was Drazen Petrovic, by far he best non US player there, and the only player who held his own against the Dream Team I’m aware. Petrovic had no relevance to my write-up. Petrovic, Radja, and Kukoc were the big three on that ‘92 Croatian ...

League expansion and the dilution of competition
I admit, this is a nerdy post. I tried to condense it for discussion purposes--I could write an entire book on my findings. Anyhow, I thought I'd share my thoughts... The prevailing theory among NBA purists is "league expansions" reduce the quality of competition. Bill Russell argues this ...

Yes,
The Value score formula is ((Top Values share - Player Value Share)+(Top VS/per - Player VS/per)*1000)/100

Re: The Greatest NBA/ABA Players All-time *updated
I can't seem to copy this sheet to get an overall assessment, but here are some head-scratchers: 74 - Al Jefferson 75 - Kevin McHale 76 - Bill Russell 95 - Joakim Noah 97 - Willis Reed 98 - Greg Monroe I remember Monroe from last year's list. Seems his little bit of playoff performance has been pre...

The Greatest NBA/ABA Players All-time *updated
In the over 70 seasons of NBA and ABA basketball, the hundreds of variations of rules, and the thousands of players, it’s important to—at least theoretically—create a standard period of time in which comparisons between classic players and current players can be reasonably performed. The Early 90s (...

Re: The Obvious Case For LeBron James (2017-18 MVP)
You can pretty much throw stats out the window when discussing MVP. It's primarily narrative driven. There's nothing very compelling about the best player of his generation leading a team to a 42-38 pythag record in the Eastern Conference. Harden will more than likely win this in a landslide. So th...

The Obvious Case For LeBron James (2017-18 MVP)
According to reports I've followed from the sportswriters serving as potential voters on the 2017-18 MVP award, it appears it's down to two players -- James Harden and LeBron James. Harden is the overwhelming favorite due to the advantage he holds with his teams success, the Rockets currently own th...
