Re: How valuable are various datasets?
I'd still very much like to take a spin through some of the Vantage data, but that has proven challenging.

Nylon Calc notice
Just a quick note, I'm not sure if folks saw, but I took over as editor of Nylon Calculus today. Ian is now running all of Hardwood Paroxysm so needed someone to handle the day to day. I just wanted to say that the virtual door is always open for questions, comments, suggestions and even the occasio...

Re: Flip Saunders' teams and 3ptas
Feels almost like piling on, but I've looked at a ton of stuff with respect to Flip (and Wittman, who runs a very similar system) coached team, and their what might be called "MoreyBall" percentages have always been quite low relative to the rest of the league.

Definitely intended for a lay audience more than the folks here, so sorry if I elided distinctions or glossed over important details.

Re: True Usage: Re-Imagining Offense With Multiple Credit Po
Can you compute the efg%, ts% and / or offensive efficiency on a player's assist usage and "true" or total usage? I think you have the data to at least do efg%. The later would get at efficiency where player had major involvement, halfway between looking at individual usage efficiency and...

Re: True Usage: Re-Imagining Offense With Multiple Credit Po
I'm less concerned about "apportioning credit" than I am about describing offense in a slightly better (or at least alternative) way. Certainly, until there's a good metric for "playmaking efficiency" this isn't ready to replace any of the stuff we already use, but I like the ide...

Re: The 'effect of being up X'
Simplest explanation is the team that's down is more likely to try and score quickly whereas the team that's leading will try and milk the clock. And while I think the causation is slightly messy, the observed results would mesh with Knarsu's observations about shot quality decreasing as the shot cl...

Re: Kirk Goldsberry Article & Sloan Paper - Databall
Thanks for responding Kirk. I think the biggest problem is only sort of in your control - given the podium you have, the "results" are going to be amplified and refracted across the basketball internet. Ricky Rubio worst offensive player in the league is now sort of a meme. I understand wh...
