Re: Appr. 5.x year reg. adj. +/- (J.E., 2010)

The way I understand it is that the lambda is just a Lagrange multiplier that is used to enforce some additional constraint (i.e. in addition to the least squares minimization). I don't know exactly what that constraint is for RAPM, but for example, in mechanics it would be used to enforce incompres...

Interesting to find Bojan Bogdanovic at the bottom. I thought he is a potential late first round pick.

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

How many players, in at least 2000 minutes, have averaged at least 24 points and 7.3 assists, shooting .550 or better TS% ? Rose, LeBron last year, Nate Archibald in '73, and Oscar in 6 of his first 8 seasons. There's no doubt Rose is on a great looking career trajectory. His TS has gone up by doub...

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

I think Iverson is a good case study. When he moved to Denver, his USG dropped about 10 points and he posted the best TS% numbers of his career. Hoopdata doesn't go back before 2007, so I can't look at all his Philly years, but if you compare his shots from Denver and Philly in 2007, you see that al...

Evan, your profile doesn't contain a link. I don't see signatures any more.
Ah, good point. I forgot about that after the great hack.

Re: 2011 all-NBA teams

It eventually happened in baseball, and it's slowly starting to happen in basketball. The Sloan Conference seems to be helping. ESPN and TNT now routinely mentions +/- stats (although haven't once seen adjusted +/-). I think it just takes time.

I'm not clear on what you're asking. I've been putting up stats for each series on my blog, but not here.

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

Just as a fun thought, what if Wade had ended up in Chicago? A lineup of Rose, Wade, Deng, Gibson(?), and Noah. Man, that would have been a good team.

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

Yeah, that's a pretty good lineup: NAME POSS EZPM100 Derrick Rose 242 11.98 Omer Asik 242 10.56 Ronnie Brewer 242 7.80 Taj Gibson 242 4.19 Luol Deng 242 2.69 Although to give you an idea of the sample size (and opponent quality) issue, here is the list of players with above average number of possess...

Using the total EZPM100 data and the newly provided without Rose data for players to find the with Rose data, here is the summary: NAME total EZPM100 w/o Rose with Rose C.J. Watson 0.6 0.3 1.3 Carlos Boozer 0.2 2.4 -0.8 Joakim Noah 4.3 3.7 3.7 Kyle Korver -1.4 0.1 -3.2 Luol Deng 2.1 0.7 1.4 Omer As...

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

If nothing else, Jefferson is an interesting case statistically in that his 4-yr DRAPM (-2.5) suggests he is one of the worst defenders in the league, but his Synergy stats are actually pretty good (0.82 PPP overall, ranked #72; 0.74 PPP on iso, ranked #46). Not a good help defender, I guess.

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

you'd get the impression he was poor on defense because the team was poor on defense when he played. but notice that he played 3 times as many minutes ON versus OFF, thus that OFF data is much more likely to be skewed because it's a much smaller sample size of data. this is similar to data for chic...

Re: Rose Wins MVP And There's Apparently Little Doubt About

Along those lines... I've been working tonight on modifying my code to look at WOWY at the play-by-play level. Here are some initial results for Chicago: W/O Rose NAME POSS EZPM100 Ronnie Brewer 1208 4.80 Joakim Noah 298 3.73 Omer Asik 873 2.51 Carlos Boozer 280 2.38 Taj Gibson 955 2.11 Luol Deng 72...

Evan, I noted the possibility of using your developed database for this task (though maybe I should have left that to you) but of course it is up to you to volunteer and act. No worries. I was just giving you a hard time. ;) To be honest, I'm flattered whenever anyone suggests anything I do can be ...
