Re: Who Is More Efficient

It sounds like the question is changing every post here. You asked who is scoring more efficiently; usage tells you nothing about efficiency . If all you have is offensive rating, the player with the higher offensive rating is the more efficient player. Sure it does (in response to the bolded part)...

Re: Who Is More Efficient

This all gets to usage vs. efficiency.

It's likely that Derrick Rose would be much more efficient if his usage was closer to 20% than 35%. Why doesn't his coach cap his usage at 20%?

Why doesn't Tyson Chandler (~70% TS this season) increase his usage from 15% to 35%?

Re: 2011 Eastern Conf. Playoffs, round 1

I'll throw in Ekpe Udoh in that group like Collins and Anthony. Udoh looks terrible from a box score perspective (aside from shot blocking), but the team was so much better defensively when he was in there this year. In 1,000 minutes, they were +6.18 (remember, this is a 36 win team), with him off t...

Yeah, no kidding. I just realized that myself.

Well, Jerry Sloan certainly has more time on his hand these days. He could pop in and say hello, I suppose.

I think Jerry's Sloan paper this year involved states like this. Maybe he'll chime in...

Re: Team by Team ORating after an initial offensive rebound?

So whoever got the steal (and some credit to other teammates) should definitely get credit for that 1.27 - 1.0X, whatever the average offensive possession is Right, the value in creating a steal is creating a more favorable possession for the team, so it should be +.2 or whatever... But this also c...

Re: Team by Team ORating after an initial offensive rebound?

I would hate to spend all the time implementing such a system only to find the differences are in the range of the noise.

I wish I knew the answer a priori.

Re: Team by Team ORating after an initial offensive rebound?

To make it more complicated, we have events like "steals after defensive rebounds"!

Re: Team by Team ORating after an initial offensive rebound?

I wonder if you are on a team with a prolific offensive rebounder, should that be reflected in your own offensive efficiency. For example, in ezPM I could vary the baseline PPP according to these efficiency numbers (well, their NBA equivalents). Interesting... Example 2: The marginal value of a 2-pt...

Re: Team by Team ORating after an initial offensive rebound?

I wouldn't say "easily" (otherwise, I would do it immediately), but it's something I could do, if it was considered very useful.

Re: Team by Team ORating after an initial offensive rebound?

Pau is very efficient, so the question is why doesn't he take more of those and Kobe less? Or is Pau so efficient because he takes so few, and only when he's wide open, early in the shot clock, etc...

This doesn't directly answer your question, but I did write a couple of posts recently on the 16-23 ft jumper you may find interesting. I share some of your same questions.

Re: Aging curves

I think it should be considered that there may be a significant selection effect. There's a reason usually why players come out at 19 (or 18 in past years) vs. 21+. It is possible that the younger (and more talented) players improve more, because the ability to improve (or the magnitude of improveme...

Re: Appr. 5.x year reg. adj. +/- (updated with coaching, foul

Interesting. That had a huge effect on two rookies (Ekpe Udoh and Omer Asik) that were near the top previously.

Seems like a huge negative skew now. Does that really predict wins better?
