Jokic is number 1?? How did he get such a high DRPM?

Jokic has always had a surprisingly (tall, white, appears to be slow footed, not a shot blocker) high DRPM. I think that we can attribute this to his height (RPM takes this into account), his excellent defensive rebounding (this is often the forgotten part of defense), and a pretty decent steals rate for a big fella. I would guess that he might excel at some parts of defense which are not flashy as well, like positioning or anticipation.

I've heard that he's really good at denying his man getting the ball, and some other things we don't really think of when grading defensive bigs. We tend to focus solely on rim protection.

Teams take a surprisingly low percentage of their shots at the rim while he is on defense. It is likely due to the decrease in transition by opponents due to his lack of turnovers and the increase in offensive efficiency.

This article by Ben Falk takes a nice look at why metrics rate Jokic so highly on defense. It's behind a paywall, but the main points are that he doesn't give up offensive rebounds, he doesn't foul, and he doesn't give up shots in the paint.
