NBA's Greatest Historians (Books - e.g. Pollack, Hollander, Stainback, Weber)

Post by pdevos » Tue Apr 23, 2019 4:01 am

I was wondering about what are some of the best books to cover the history of the NBA. Especially the 60s & 70s. So any recommendations are appreciated.

A few authors I've found -- not that I've found all their books -- many seem hard to come buy and many I've bought, e.g. Basketball Stars of 1960s and 1970s tend to fall apart rather quickly. And not a ton of detail, but a lot of the basic stats. I'm looking for player commentary on other players, coach quotes, etc. Also interested if anyone has read any biographies (or autobiographies) they felt were rather good reads.

I haven't gotten any of Hollander's books yet, but he's a real hoot from what I can tell on his commentary on players.

For example...

Harvey Pollack
- Harvey Pollack Handbook (1967 - 2010)

Zander Hollander
- The Modern Encyclopedia of Basketball (1973)
- The Complete Handbook of Pro Basketball (annually 1975 - 1998)

William G. Mokray
- Basketball Stars of 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964

Barry Gottehrer
- Basketball Stars of 1965

Barry Stainback
- Basketball Stars of 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969

Louis Saban
- Basketball Stars of 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973

Hal Bock & Ben Olan
- Basketball Stars of 1974, 1975

Bruce Weber
- All-Pro Basketball Stars 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983

Lou Sahadi
- Basketball's Fastest Hands (1977)

Dave. Wolf
- Great Moments in Pro Basketball (1968)

Bill Gutman
- The Pictorial History of Basketball (1988)

A a few examples of the above books...

Crow!

always feels like Peter Pan movie when seeing your name/moniker. :)

Yes, many times, albeit, I probably need to search again with more directed searches. I know I can't log into the latter anymore (http://www.apbr.org/forum/) -- perhaps is now defunct. I know a lot of the links on http://www.apbr.org/ are old or dead. e.g. Kevin Pelton's old stuff. Would love to update it actually.

Kinda wish there was mailing lists or interest groups on these things to better consolidate information and curate.

Appreciate the re-direct, will see what I can dig up in the next few days.
