careers ranked 1952-2017

Post by Mike G »

For comparison, last year's version:
http://www.apbr.org/metrics/viewtopic.p ... 12
T is a weighted sum of other (per 36 min.) rates: 30 is a star, 35 is an allstar, 40 a superstar.
po% is the % of player's minutes in playoffs.
po/r is ratio of career T rates, PO/RS. Normal is about .93
Rates are normalized to 100 points and 44 rebounds per team, per game.
RS and PO are included in the totals and rates, but PO are double-counted to get the rankings.
Here's the new Top 50

LeBron seizes the top spot. Seven consecutive Finals, and no sign of slowing down, will do that.
Actually, when I credit him with 7 fewer games, it's a tie. Or with one fewer title, he's #2.

Wade slips past West; having played 3 more games!
With one of the great statistical seasons, Westbrook pushes 10 players aside, from 36 to 26; Durant moves up from 37 to 29; Paul from 31 to 30 (passed by RW and KD); all 3 passed Pierce.
P Gasol slipped 2 spots and Dwight gained 2. Ginobili passed 3 guys and Curry jumped 21!

Since last year, Carmelo passed Issel and Kemp, was passed by Curry.

Harden zoomed from 102 to 65, Griffin from 95 to 75, Love from 143 to 99.
Rondo gained 5 spots, Zach 7.

Oldtimers' steals, blocks, and turnovers are estimated from other rates, or just made up from anecdotal evidence.
Assists before 1968 are boosted to better reflect the modern Ast/FG ratio.
NBA and ABA title-winning players are rewarded by an extra 10 playoff games-worth of credit.
The next 50:

Have you ever thought about building this as a year-by-year progression to compare how current young players (Towns/Jokic type) compare through x-seasons to the all-timers?

There's already a decent system for doing that:
http://bkref.com/tiny/GBAVj
You can search by cumulative WS or VORP, etc; thru age 21, through first 2 seasons, etc.

My tables are trying to retrospectively gauge a player's career, with heavy weight on playoffs. BkRef.com does not have a feature that combines RS and PO, as yet.
I've also emphasized per-minute productivity, at the expense of aggregate totals. And the standardized rates allow us to convert to 'equivalent totals', as if all games have the same number of points and rebounds to be divvied up.

A player who gets lots of minutes for a bad team may rack up impressive totals, but he doesn't get any playoffs; his numbers may well be 'inflated', if the rest of the NBA outpaces him; and his ranking may only equal that of a role player with an elite team. They might even be the same player, one year and the next.

Rates are normalized to 100 points and 44 rebounds per game, per team.
So if you get 30 pts and 10 reb in games where teams get 120 pts and 55 reb, that's equivalent to 25 and 8.

Getting these for each season and postseason, we get a career total for equivalent points, etc. Here are career leaders:

Code: Select all

ePts adjusted per36
45381 K Malone 27.1
43879 Kareem 24.7

38286 Nowitzki 25.3
37383 Duncan 23.7
34335 Wilt 23.4
34066 Pierce 23.5

18243 K Malone 10.9
17899 Garnett 11.6
16935 Shaq 12.2
16861 Parish 11.4
16335 Gilmore 11.9

eAst adjusted per36
17668 Stockton 11.8
13940 Kidd 8.9
11349 M Jackson 9.4
11305 Magic 10.4
10778 Nash 9.2
10018 Oscar 8.0
9963 Payton 7.0
9466 LeBron 6.8
9400 Isiah 8.8
8844 Cousy 7.8
8839 Paul 9.8
In recent years, I've adjusted assists by home/away discrepency. Before 1968 they're adjusted to historic Ast/FG ratios.

Notes and updates:
Durant had a zero in his Rings column. With a 1 there, he moves ahead of Moses Malone, to #28.
LeBron has now played (RS+PO) 1278 games (Jordan 1251). If he has 10 fewer games, Jordan is still #1.

LeBron's po% -- the fraction of his career minutes which are playoffs -- is now .180 -- the only top-40 player who is higher is Magic at .185
Then we have Ginobili at .197 and Kawhi on top at .214

A fun thing is to rank the various years of entry, roughly equivalent to 'draft class +1', by productivity of the best players therein.
In past editions, I've done this by the equivalent totals of all players in my list. And to get on the list, one needs 10,000 total equivalents (ePts + eReb + etc). But this includes a lot of middling players, whose totals are sure to make later seasons (with more teams in the league) more dominant.

We could do it by "superstars", but that makes it very grainy; and the cutoff is very harsh: Hornacek, in or out?
I'm not going to look up allstars or all-NBA; so I'm going to use a few cutoffs, and pare the list down to those who make all 3. They are:
equivalent totals > 15,000
eWins (est.) >50
and the 'credits' from which I generate the rankings -- heavy on playoffs.

This last one cut the list neatly in half, and so 356 players are considered in this survey.
I made an xyz which was the cube root of the product of the 3 numbers.
xyz correlates strongly with all 3 (since they are all based on the same stuff) but most strongly with eWins; so I'm showing those.

Best entry classes to date:

Code: Select all

eWins: RS PO some players
1985 1154 135 Jordan Olajuwon Barkley Stockton
1997 1010 83 Bryant Iverson Nash Allen
1986 999 94 Malone Ewing Porter Schrempf
1999 989 72 Nowitzki Pierce Carter Jamison
2002 893 64 Gasol Parker Randolph Johnson

2000 864 56 Marion Odom Brand Davis
1990 825 61 Robinson Kemp Divac Hardaway
2004 781 101 James Wade Anthony Bosh
1971 817 54 Lanier Cowens Issel Paultz
1996 764 54 Garnett Wallace McDyess Finley

1982 751 53 Thomas Nance Aguirre Chambers
1994 733 54 Webber Cassell Hardaway Kukoc
1993 670 68 O'Neal Mourning Horry Sprewell
1989 657 48 Jackson Strickland Smits Richmond
2008 651 52 Durant Millsap Horford Lowry
'85 and '86 have been 1-2 in previous editions; the '97 gang has moved right in with them. None are active, unless Marbs comes back.
Note the '08 gang that ranks 15th. They continue with Noah, Conley, Gortat, Scola, Gay, and Thad Young. Some of these guys are in their prime, so they should move up several spots. No one is waiting in the wings from that class.
