2025 MVP Tracker

Post by Mike G »

https://www.basketball-reference.com/friv/mvp.html
Teams have played 7-9 games, so the season is right at 10% complete.
Here are numbers for the 10 ranked mvp "possibles"; plus another 5 who rank in the top 5 in PER, WS/48, or BPM.

Code: Select all

Prob% player tm W% Pts Reb Ast SB-T PER WS/48 BPM

Guys from .500 or lower teams don't get much respect.

Jokic is now up to .722 likely to win MVP.
But there's this stupid minimum requirement of 65 games. Most players are not 72% likely to even get that many games.
So if Joker gets hurt or gets tired or whatever, and we jack up the other 9 guys to fill the void, it looks like this:

Code: Select all

.28 Shai G-Alexander OKC
.26 Jayson Tatum BOS
.12 Domantas Sabonis SAC
.07 Darius Garland CLE
.06 Devin Booker PHO
.06 Jarrett Allen CLE
.05 Evan Mobley CLE
.04 Anthony Davis LAL
.04 Chet Holmgren OKC
These sum to .97

For about a week, Jokic wasn't in the ten most likely to win MVP. Now back, italicized, as his 3 games off put him below the 80% of games eligibility threshold.
In addition to the b-r.com top ten, I added a few who are top 10 in at least one of these categories, and with 400+ minutes.

Nuggets really need to pick up 1-2 players in some fashion, good or even near neutral guys. They have an open roster spot and 2-3 guys they could cut without much regret.

It's a 2 man contest, maybe.
Current top 10 plus others who are top 10 in one or more of the other summary stats, and with >550 minutes.

Those in the lower half could displace some in the top10, should their teams start to do better.
Sabonis at #7 despite the worst team Win% in the bunch. He's top 10 in every column, top 5 in a few.

For one (1) day, Shai G-A had the lead, but I failed to record it. Something like 41-38. Then Denver won a game, putting them over some threshold (.560?)?
In one week -- Dec. 23-29 -- he had 3 of his season's top 4 GameScores and top 2 (3/5) game BPM.
They were also 3 of the top 4 games by anyone in that interval.

Ignoring for now the importance of team Win%, and with all-star selections upcoming, these guys should all be on an allstar team. Even as Wemby is only the #5 center in the West.
PER, WS/48 and BPM (*min) are all converted to 'wins' and averaged (weighted 2-3-4) for xyzWins.

It really is a dead heat for the lead. Joker leads by 23 ppm with this weighted avg, and Shai leads by the same when unweighted.

Note: I've been updating the previous post randomly or whenever it might be an inflection point. But neither guy is wavering, it's almost all just team W/L.

For several weeks, Jokic had more than a 3:1 lead over Shai in the Prob% at b-r.com
But Denver is 8-8 since the allstar break and without Jokic the last 3 games. His perceived advantage is now 54-39%.

Code: Select all

mvp? min eWins e484 PER WS WS/48 BPM VORP
Shai 2298 13.7 2.91 31.2 15.3 .319 11.7 8.0
Jokic 2263 12.9 2.76 31.9 14.5 .307 13.2 8.7
Giannis 1933 12.1 3.03 29.8 9.0 .224 8.7 5.2
Denver has played 1 more game than OKC, and they are within 25 minutes for the season.
Giannis is included here for being a near-consensus #3 across the board.

Code: Select all

mvp? TS% TRb% Ast% Stl% Blk% TO% Usg% ORtg DRtg
Shai .646 7.9 30.8 2.5 3.0 9.0 34.6 130 107
Jokic .659 19.4 44.3 2.3 1.7 12.9 29.4 133 111
In ORtg-DRtg, Shai leads 23-22 and on higher Usage.
Win%: OKC .829 - .620 Den

Jokic shooting .013 higher than Shai -- same as the difference in their opponents' TS%

And on that last point, and making this an official pitch for SGA, I think a player's TS% is most significant when compared to that of his opponents. So this table is about Scoring.
Comparing Shai this year to an ancient similar player, in 5 MVP seasons, for the other best team of all time.

Columns are: year, minutes per team game; player and opponent TS% and their ratio; player/opponent total points, and that fraction * ts%r; player and opponent (individual) pts/48 min, and their ratio; that ratio * ts% ratio.

Jordan might have averaged 46/100 if he only played 2/3 of games rather than 4/5.
Shai (or anyone) would certainly wear down at 39 mpg * 14 years.

For perspective, Steve Nash won MVP with 4.4 VORP, 10.9 WS
