Not having ever attended, the Sloan conference had become so big and sprawling in my mind that I'd thought it had been a two day conference this year!

Which belatedly reminds me that NCSSORS should happen this year ... yup, Oct 16, again at Menlo College, south of San Francisco. Deadline for proposals was July 1 ... I actually had a couple of ideas, but I probably wouldn't have had time to work on them anyway.

I've never attended, but reading the descriptions this year made me feel sufficiently jealous that I'm seriously considering trying to attend next year.

As a West Coast guy, the fact that it's two days makes it significantly more appealing since it would seem silly to spend more time traveling than at the conference.

Can we get ESPN to televise the game, or at least put up some box scores of our games on its site?

Gotta see about the hoops. In past years it's been a choice between 4 hrs. of sleep + playing or 6 hrs. of sleep + no basketball. Sleep wins that one in a 2002 Lakers-Nets blowout.

A bump and reminder the submission date is coming up, though I'm told the organizers will be lenient if you can get something together later next week.

At last year's conference, the talks given by research paper presenters (Zach Samuels and Paul Raff, Brian Skinner, Kerry Whisnant, and me) were videotaped. Does anyone know what became of these videos? I've asked a few people involved with the conference a couple of times, but I've never gotten any info on that.

Just a note: As I'm sure DeanO, Roland, and others on here working for teams do, I get a lot of people asking me what they can do to get an analytically-focused job with an NBA team. While such jobs are scarce, getting a paper accepted by this conference is a nearly foolproof way to get noticed (for better or worse) in this field. If working for a team is your goal, and you've got a good paper (or the makings of one), I can't think of a better way to get most of the relevant people to pay attention to you than to submit the paper to this conference.

I'll be there, probably a few days before and after the conference. Hit me up on twitter if you'd like to meet for a drink or lunch or something, or just to listen to me talk about Eddie House. I'll be talking about Eddie House a lot. And maybe Anthony Morrow. But mostly Eddie House.

For those going: expect me to arrange the same two things (Fri nt, Sun am) as we've done previous years.

And ed: beard or no beard?

He was the last player to score 60+ in a NCAA D-1 game until Ben Woodside did it in 2008.

Does anyone want to go to the Celtics game on the 2nd? Since I've never been to the States and I've never seen a live NBA game I wanted to catch one. The only other Boston home game while I'm still there is on the 4th. ..

There's a chance I'll fall asleep during the game though because my 11 hour flight lands 4 hours before the game

I guarantee you wouldn't be the only conference attendee at Boston-Golden State on the 4th ... I think there's going to be a small wave of humanity that goes conference-game-bar on that Friday. Although a direct conference-bar itinerary is tough to argue against.

It's the Warriors? I won't be there, but I will certainly make sure to catch that game on League Pass. Don't want to miss Garnett vs. Udoh. That's the matchup everyone is waiting for - I know it. Laughing

As a big supporter and one of probably 1500 people in attendance of Anthony Morrow's 37 point breakout game GSW@LAC in 2008 I would like to talk about him as well.

I'm probably biased as a Harvard student, but might I suggest the Harvard homestand against Penn and Princeton on the 4th and 5th? These games will most likely determine the Ivy League autobid (if Harvard wins the three games leading up to the Princeton game, they will have a chance to clinch at home) and the atmosphere will be great.

Ivy basketball is up this year, probably the best the league has been since 2002, and the atmosphere at Harvard games is fun. The Princeton game may already be sold out, but I'm sure there are still tickets for Penn.

Chilltown & Jon - Harvard's Keith Wright ranked quite high (47th) in my national player rankings when I last updated on 2-19-11 - is he THAT studly in your eyes? Just curious, I've never seen him play. The other top Ivy guys - Kareem Maddux (78th) - Princeton, Greg Mangano (112th) - Yale, and Ian Hummer (144th) - Princeton. There's then a bit of a drop off to Zach Rosen (320th) of Penn. Either of you guys seen these guys enough to have an opinion if those rankings make sense to you - are those really the top 5 guys in the Ivy League?

I'm starting to think the meat of this conference has shifted. The basketball analytics panel is kind of stale at this point because of the limitations. Teams don't want to give away their edge and it seems the whole coach:stats guy relationship has been discussed to death. Of course, any panel with Cuban and Zarren involved will be very entertaining, though! I also don't have the best POV as I only was an online stream viewer this year.

One of the ultimate values is probably the independent projects and studies that had to compete with the best of the best submissions. Must have been the only day of all time that twitter actually added to my knowledge.

Yes, ssac hashtag has really been useful for the things that we missed during the hefty conference agenda.

Here's a another nice wrap for the basketball analytics session:

Many thanks to Truehoop bloggers!

Any reviews of the Adjusted +/- posters?

"New Player Evaluation Technique for Players of the NBA" by Jeremias Engelmann reminds me of back2newbelf's model. Is that you & your work?

I'd also really like to hear review / analysis of James Piette's poster addressing the impact of specific player pairings on outcomes and on player ratings.

Pure Adjusted +/- has its supporters for its purity and simplicity and it is worth seeing in its pure form, but if you decided to "adjust" pure Adjusted +/- how many adjustments would you make in the main model or split out after?

Possibilities (in no particular oder):

1. Of course multi-season

2.Garbage time

3. or scoreboard situation in general

4. Home / Away

5. "Rest"

6. Coach

7.Elevation

8. Pairings (beyond what is already done)

9. Possession Type

10. Regression to the mean, by regularization / ridge regression or other techniques

11. Out of sample testing

12. Greater adjustment of within team values to even more precisely match that teams performance / outcomes.

13. Or specific multi-collinearity "fixes" or "attempted corrections"

14. Some sort of inclusion of direct statistical contributions as a prior, in the model or in an after the Adjusted +/- model hybrid metric

15. Minutes

16. Age

17. "Player Type" or "Role"

18. Heightened emphasized on quality of counterpart match-up?

19. Heightened emphasis on performance against playoff level teams and playoff performance itself

20. Performance against opponent offensive and defensive types

What else?

How much overall noise reduction can be achieved by doing some or a lot of these things?

I found the Allocation and Dynamic Efficiency in NBA Decision Making paper by Rao & Matthew Goldman online http://www.justinmrao.com/goldman_rao_sloan.pdf

On quick review it seems to boil down to take a "good shot" (average or better) in the first 15 seconds of the shot clock. During the transition period of the next 5 seconds, a good shot is still preferred but taking a decent shot becomes more acceptable or just flat acceptable. In the last 4 seconds passing up a decent shot is risky and probably should not be done often.

The philosophy of "Get it early or get it late" is in fundamental conflict with the findings of this paper or a quick look at shot clock part shooting stats at 82 Games for teams or most players.

It might be useful to directly see the rate fouls are called thru parts of the shot clock in general and split down to court zone for shooting fouls and the OR% by shot clock part. Has anyone done either?

If there are any differences, they are affecting the efficiency point in addition to the shooter's decisionmaking.

Is Brian Skinner's paper available on line anywhere? Did they say how soon the conference would make them available?

There was one poster on NHL adjusted +/-. I have no clue about ice hockey unfortunately, but knowing what I know about basketball I think there would, once again, be quite a huge benefit by using ridge regression instead. Apparently NHL.com has matchupfiles, maybe I'll do this soon. Is there a board for statistical analysis on ice hockey?

The guy who had a poster on NBA APM got sick and couldn't make it. At least that's what I heard. I think it combined RAPM and BoxScore statistics
