2024 Playoffs overview
Re: 2024 Playoffs overview
Celtics & Nuggets my 2 most likely to win title.
5 or 6 would be youngest ever if they won it this way. Not very likely.
It is interesting how many over the hill old teams there are this year though.
Maybe a new era is dawning but it has to dawn and become an era of that.

Re: 2024 Playoffs overview
The top 9s on Offensive, Defensive and Net are all among those still alive. They are different top 9s.
Timberwolves, Celtics. Thunder, Nuggets and Clippers are on all 3 top 9s. The only team still alive and on none of the top 9s is the Heat. 2 of 3 teams already gone missed on all 3 and Pelicans qualified on defense by a thin margin.
Suns lead playoffs on FT rate but were last on 3pt rate.
Nuggets are second lowest of FT rate and 3rd lowest on 3pt rate. Nuggets partially compensate with 5th highest at the rim frequency.
Sixers 3rd and 4th highest respectively. Mavs 4th and 6th highest. Sixers complete the trifecta with 3rd highest frequency at rim. Mavs below average there.
Celtics highest on 3pt rate, middling on FT rate and 2nd to last on shots at rim rate.
Thunder modestly above average on 3pta rate but below average on other two.

Re: 2024 Playoffs overview
I think it is 4 series with at least near a 5 net rebound per game lead. TWolves won with near +14. Several things can go into that but it is noted / notable.

Only 1 less fta per team per game. A lot of it is due to pace decline and what produces pace decline. Better defense, indecision, physicality...
Re: 2024 Playoffs overview
The 11 best shooting teams -- regular season eFG% -- made the playoffs, and 6 made it out of the 1st round.
The 5 who are out lost to either a better-shooting team or to a much better defensive team (Min, Den).
Meanwhile, just 7 of the 15 above-avg Rebounding teams made the playoffs, and 4 are into the 2nd round.
Of 15 teams with fewer RS turnovers than their opponents, 10 made the playoffs (3 more made the play-in), and 6 are still playing.

About LeBron, he wrote:
"Looking at his component wins added via BPM (1.7), PER (1.5), RAPTOR (1.2) and win shares (0.8), our consensus estimates James produced 1.3 wins during the first round,"
The Win Shares are straightforward (WS/48)*min/48 and concur with what I posted.
If PER gives Lebron 1.5 wins --and AD had better PER and played more minutes -- then the two of them total >3 "wins."
The whole team won 1 game; the series pt-diff suggests they "should have won" 2.16 (Pythagorean) out of 5; so the rest of the team was significantly negative, whatever target wins the method shoots for.
BPM-wins looks similarly hard to justify, unless we figure 2-ish wins vs Denver might be equivalent to more vs average competition?
It's tricky, whatever.
Mostly unrelated:
The 2 teams that swept their 1st round opponents 4-0 averaged 3.52 Pythagorean wins. (OKC and Min)
The 4-1 winners (Den, Bos) had avg 3.64 Pyth Wins
4-2 winners (Dal, Ind, NYK) got avg 3.58 pyth wins.
The only 4-3 series featured the most dominant 1st round team, the Orlando Magic with 4.52 Pyth wins.*
A larger sample of 7 game series likely has winning teams getting around 3.6 pyWins. So maybe it's not essential to divide any "wins" by number of games played?
* -- I don't know the last time a team has lost a series with a scoring advantage more than Orl +4.4 ppg over Cle.
It's still well behind the Lakers' +18.7 in a 2-1 series loss to the Hawks in 1956.

Re: 2024 Playoffs overview
Scroll up and note that 2 games into round 2, the top 4 in "all-stat" wins, for the whole postseason, were Joker-Edwards-Brunson-Luka. Shai at #9 and Haliburton 20th.
Star player WS rates seem inevitably to go up or down with a win or a loss. Brunson Game BPM are shown as -9 and 2 in losses; in wins 5, 9, and 8.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/pl ... nced/2024/
Luka meanwhile has the worst postseason shooting of his career, and 2 worst individual series.
We don't know exactly how much he enhances the eFG% of Washington, Green, Jones, Gafford, etc; but I suspect it is a lot.
