I think that's a very unfair assessment of Collins. He might be the new Shane Battier:
Hawks defense in playoffs when he's on: 82. Off: 114
Regular season On: 97. Off: 108
Overall a +15 in the playoffs against the Magic. Hard to believe he is the worst player in this series
200th in individual defensive rebounding %, but 3rd in adjusted defensive rebounding. 2nd in defensive RAPM for 2011. It's almost like he's just doing the things we can't capture with traditional statistics; and nothing else
Please take this as constructive criticism: I think it would be good if you sprinkled some (more) defense on eWins

Yes, critique accepted. There's also Joel Anthony for Miami, going 29 mpg.
He's also going up against Dwight Howard almost entirely. But Dwight out-rebounds Collins nearly 4-to-1. A player that near the basket should get that many rebounds just by grabbing what hits the floor.
He does get 1.8 Stl/36, so he can pick up balls. And then, he doesn't do much else.
If he'd get just 1 block and 9 boards (60% of Dwight) per36, he'd be out of the negative.
Not an ample defense of eWins, but b-r.com gives him .023 WS/48, and a PER of 1.1 .
That's quite a bit better on WS, and much worse in PER, relative to eW.

He's limiting Dwight in terms of counterpart info - Dwight is gathering fewer boards against him, shooting worse, and committing more TOs. (Even if those TOs aren't registered as steals for Collins - he's drawn a few charges, etc.)
In terms of simple +/-, the Hawks are +10 when Collins is on the floor, -24 when he's on the bench. That ignores garbage time (where the Hawks actually closed the raw +/- slightly in game 5) not to mention 100% of Collins' minutes occur when Dwight is on the floor.
Magic are +18 with Dwight on the floor, -4 when he's on the bench. Dwight has done the bulk of his damage in the other ~60% of the minutes when he's not matched up against Collins. (The Magic are +28 over that span)
Edit: I think Jason Collins is a good case study, actually, since I believe he is an extreme in terms of what the boxscore is not handling properly. Every player, to some extent, has some Jason Collins in them (that sounds wrong!) but he simply has the most. (Where his value diverges maximally from what the boxscore is saying) Basically, take Jason Collins and his negative eWins away from the Hawks, and they've already lost 4-0 or 4-1.

I'll throw in Ekpe Udoh in that group like Collins and Anthony. Udoh looks terrible from a box score perspective (aside from shot blocking), but the team was so much better defensively when he was in there this year. In 1,000 minutes, they were +6.18 (remember, this is a 36 win team), with him off they were -5.55. That's one of the biggest differentials you will find this season (I know because I looked). The opponent eFG% went from 51.7 to 48.7 when he was on the court.

looking at his impact a little closer, it appears the paint defense (close shots and volume) was vastly - vastly - improved for golden state w/ ekpe on the court vs without. Some of that has to do w/ the fact he was replacing some truly awful interior defenders, but he definitely bears a closer eye for next year. (probably a good gamble that he's a positive - maybe strongly so - team defender)

Dwight's OReb% and DReb% are both about what they were in the regular season. His TS% and eFG% are thru the roof, along with his TO%.
Collins, Zaza, Armstrong, and Etan Thomas total 38 minutes and 8.4 fouls per game. Dwight is averaging 10.2 PPG from the FT line alone.
Collins is 2-6 from both the line and from the field, in 5 games. As a certified Zero on offense, how does this affect the rest of his team? Their playoff eFG% is about .030 below their season's. Including Jamal Crawford (up .050).
While many Orlando players are having sub-par offensive showings, Dwight is not one of them.
Do the +/- data really show us anything other than that Collins is much better than Pachulia on defense?
Are Atlanta's perimeter defenders that much better with Collins behind them, that they're able to attack more aggressively against Turkoglu, Anderson, Redick, JRich, and Nelson, all of whom are shooting .100 to .200 below their norms?

I think that's missing the point by analyzing Dwight's numbers. The Hawks' strategy has been to guard Howard with 1 man, instead of the doubleteaming him or shading him like how most teams defend the Magic. The Hawks are okay letting Howard rack up box score numbers, as long as his teammates aren't getting open jumpshots, Collins/Zaza deserve credit for the poor performances of Hedo, JRich, QRich, Anderson and Redick.

That's what I was asking, thanks.
So what, if anything, is in the boxscore -- including point differential -- that could tell us what Collins' value is in this series?
Alternatively, what value could be arbitrarily assigned to a guy just based on his minutes? A minimum of .34 eW/480 for a player who gets 17 mpg?
Then Turkoglu goes 34 mpg, is several times as productive, and for a better team.
Does 'unproductive' necessarily imply "defensive stalwart"?

Pachulia actually has had a relatively good defensive series - it's been Hilton Armstrong, Josh Powell, Etan Thomas, and the small bursts of Josh Smith/Al Horford that have gotten destroyed.
As far as the Hawks offense being .030 eFG below their season norm - how much of that do you attribute to Jason Collins being on the floor for ~18mpg, and how much of that is because the entire 5 game sample has been against one of the best defenses in the league? I'd say, adjusting for opponent quality, Jason hasn't really hindered the Atlanta offense much, if at all.

So what, if anything, is in the boxscore -- including point differential -- that could tell us what Collins' value is in this series?
not to toot my own horn or anything, but I've been following this series pretty closely.

Game by game breakdown of the matchup (I've done 4, last night's game will be up sometime late this afternoon). There's nothing in the boxscore that will attribute defender in each matchup - that comes from the pbp data - but overall it's represented in Dwight's line. Against the subpar defenders he's been the GOAT, against Jason (and to a similar extent, Zaza) he's been quite human.
