Hacked
Re: Hacked
Such a sad loss - an invaluable collection of basketball wisdom and knowledge up in (cyber) smoke. I guess it's time to roll up our sleeves and rebuild it the best we can . . .
Re: Hacked
If any want to help...
go to google
type in site:http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics and then the "title of a thread" with still still missing pages, then check on the cache buttons and if you find a missing page, cut and paste into the appropriate place and give it a page x heading.
To find which pages are still missing in a thread do a browser search for "page" and see what you find and don't find.

Re: Hacked
If anything reasonable can be done to back-up or prevent a repeat hack that would be good.
Re: Hacked
Here are a few threads that could potentially by filled in:
site:http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics "Phil Birnbaum article on why box score stats get it wrong"
site:http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics "Celtics '08 pre(&post)diction etc.

Re: Hacked
Crow, you've been at it for five hours, major props
Re: Hacked
Of all forums to be hacked (?) it's surprising/disappointing that this was among them. Fortunately a lot of the analysis seemed to be via excel spreadsheets, so as long as those are saved - in conjunction with cache websites that are already being listed - a lot of the pertinent stats could be revived.
It's a shame, but I'm optimistic of all the new threads that are already budding all over.

Re: Hacked
Thanks, I didn't want everyone to get completely bummed out. It is a small part of recovery.
Re: Hacked
Wow, this is terrible. Hard to fathom that six years of research and discussion are gone. I will try to help reconstruct some of the old threads I had bookmarked. I am also willing to contribute some money to pay for regular backups of the board going forward.
Re: Hacked
I'm seriously in shock... Some moron had fun for a while and destroyed all that data? !@#$!Kevin Pelton wrote:Some sad news to report. SonicsCentral.com was hacked yesterday, and it appears all the information in our databases was lost. That means all users and posts from the six-plus years of the APBRmetrics forum are gone.
<long uncensored rant and then a couple minutes of silence>
Anyway, what do you suggest to do now?
Should we try to repost as many memorable/valuable posts/analysis as possible?
Or should we treat it as a reset button and a reason to create even better ones?
I'm asking because I could only help with the first one

I'm sorry for everyone that lost data here..... looking up past threads is something I'd do from time to time, I'm sure MANY did it much more than I did.Crow wrote:Thanks, I didn't want everyone to get completely bummed out. It is a small part of recovery.
Thanks Crow for trying to pull up old threads.

Re: Hacked
I tried to get many of the recently active threads and a few historical ones.
I might add a few more later.
If there are high priority threads for recovery, name them and maybe that person, I and / or someone else can work to try to load them. It takes time but I have been pretty successful at recovery all or nearly all pages of threads pursued.

Re: Hacked
Good lord, why would anyone want to hack the APBRmetrics board? To annoy a couple dozen stat guys?
Maybe a Wins Produced warrior? j/k

Re: Hacked
Crow has been doing a monumental bit of work to dredge up all these past threads.
Why don't we have an "Archives" sub-forum for these entities? Otherwise, they bury current threads (or someone has to 'bump' newer topics back to the top).
Then if anyone wishes to revive an old thread, they might clean it up, bring over the relevant part (to the 'current' forum), reformat tables, etc.
This salvaging operation could be a long and laborious process. It shouldn't have to interfere with current goings-on, like PLAYOFFS.

Re: Hacked
I'm done or nearly done for the time being pulling up lost threads.
I had expectations that some of the recent threads would get re-visited and added on to. If they do, I might clean up the earlier comments some. If they don't get added on to, I probably won't. (If admin has the ability to enter my posts and clean them up or allow anyone to clean them up, go ahead.)
If the site administration wants to have an archive section and put any thread older than a month there that would sound fine.
If the site administration or overall community preference is to put them all there immediately, that's a call that could be made. That would be different from my notion of recovered footholds for active use, but site admin can make the call. Just took a stab at helping, without much to go on.
