Wow. These discoveries need explanations or major corrections. Is the current year issue as simple as a couple days data lag? But the huge discrepancy last season isn't because of that. I wonder if game state adjustments for garbage time are any part of this issue. I wonder if this issue is just with RPM or extends to all RAPM in past. Until certified as a measure properly distributing all wins, it is suspect to me.

I got the same league wide win totals as you did from summing the "wins" column.

Does this affect all teams equally or differently? Differently. Very differently relative to actual wins. I'll check pyth. wins trend but last nights game in today's data will cause some trouble. Rough check, these are quite different too.

Does minutes * RPM have a similar issue or does it hit zero? It does not hit zero. Off by 3060.116 points or about 4.5 per game. Is home court edge factor in model a part of this discrepancy? Other? Accounting for players who changed teams? And it is 3060 pts too many. Was there something off about the conversion to the seemingly too short wins? Are there multiple problems? May be many problems. Total minutes in my RPM data pull and comparing to what BR has now and backing out last night game minutes, it appears the RPM data pull has 2141.6 more minutes than I expected.

Some of these quick concerns / tests might be off for some reason unknown to me but this really needs a thorough explanation. The appearance is too many minutes and points, too few games and wins.

It is not clear to me if RPM wins are supposed to match actual wins or Pythagorean wins. Definition on RPM does not answer this question for me. I would have guessed actual wins. If it is pyth. wins and has to be, ok, lets clarify what it is; but that would be a disappointing step away from reality.

Crow and Mike,

As the "culprit" behind both WAR and RPM Wins (different metrics), I'll do my best to address the important questions you've raised about them.

First, we published WAR (wins above replacement-level) for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, but this season switched to RPM Wins, which drops reference to the mythical "replacement player" and simply estimates the total wins contributed by each player. For WAR, we relied initially on Daniel Myers' work from a couple of years ago that estimated a replacement-level impact of -2.35 pts/100 poss (although our own subsequent work suggests that -2.0 is probably a better estimate these days).

My own modeling suggested that a team of such replacement-level players could generate around 11 wins per year, so the remaining leaguewide wins ABOVE replacement would only be equal to roughly 1230-[11*30]=900 total WAR . . . pretty close to the actual WAR total of 870 last year.

For RPM Wins, I simply pro-rated the win value of each replacement-level possession (roughly 0.000126 wins/possession) and adjusted the WAR formula accordingly - obviating the need to reference "replacement-level players" at all in the resulting RPM Wins metric. The basic idea is: (Wins Above Replacement-Level) + (Replacement-Level Wins) = Wins.

Now, JE only runs the RPM model once per week, and we've typically posted an update for RPM and WINS each Monday based on play through the previous Sunday (sometimes only Saturday, depending on the play-by-play availability). They are not updated daily, only weekly. Thus, when Mike G summed up WINS yesterday, they were based on the state of play from the previous weekend. My quick-glance estimate is that 46 more wins occurred after our WINS numbers went up, so the numbers actually reconcile pretty well: an estimated 679 WINS compared with an actual 703 (749-46) wins. The 3.5% discrepancy is something we'll want to look at if it holds up at the end of season . . . no matter the source of error, it shouldn't be difficult to adjust!

Yes, good point. But the two approaches should be (roughly) mathematically equivalent . . . and I like being able to easily convert back and forth between WAR and WINS.

Still don't understand why total minutes on RPM page are higher ( rather than lower due to data lag) than BR total for teams. Apparent discrepancies of thousands of minutes and points leaguewide (maybe more if lags are involved) seem big enough to investigate.

Net RPM points leaguewide thousands higher than zero. Is the idea for O to the true centering point? Why this difference?

The replacement player comparisons seem like unnecessary complication to me. So every player is really better in terms of total wins than the appearance of the RPM win estimates. And a win last season isn't quite the same as this season. Any plans to shift past season data to same basis / presentation as this?

Are you pushing for team sortability at RPM pages, indifferent or resigned to no movement on this small change for greater presentation flexibility?

Whoa -- another thing that totally evaded me. Even my position total table didn't ring any bell.

I will guess that perhaps the RPM estimates were centered on zero once but maybe not every week?

Re: minutes
Between time I captured the RPM dataset and right now, ATL, BOS and BRK played two more games. Diffference in minutes looks about right for ATL but instead of 480 different BOS is only about 240 different. Suggesting BOS minutes were high in the RPM dataset. Same for CHI. I might guess that a few games got into the database twice. That would not be a huge deal. An attempt to help and check to see if it is something worse.

Well that might be premature hope. Looks like RPM database was missing about a game and a half of CLE compared to what BR implicitly had before 2 weekend games occurred and got added there. DEN a little high. I might check further but that is a start.

Some players, who e.g. have been cut, are not listed. That could distort things to a small degree

Is it? Pace varies but if minutes weighted RPM is off by over 3000pts I am somewhat skeptical that possession weight is right on. Since it is possession based it might be nice see the possessions in addition to minutes but...

Yeah it could but the bigger problem appears to be too many minutes in the RPM database not too few.
