Expectations / advice for the Bucks
Re: Expectations / advice for the Bucks
Dredge at Nylon Calculus has Giannis at 42nd and modestly better than RPM. Will check PTPM later. May be possible to weave the different metrics together better. Maybe he is in middle ground between mild and strong and maybe the second half of last season is the pivot point. I'll open further to that possibility. A near max extension to a young guy 42nd on Dredge? I can accept that. Still a leap of faith whether he can become a top 10 guy and help get you to the conference finals or beyond.
Re: Expectations / advice for the Bucks
PTPM for season ended up at +0.8. Was -0.2 in Feb., so he did "surge" at maybe a plus 2ish late in season.
So partial scorecard for Giannis last season (there are other marks):
PER very good
BPM very good
WS/48 good
RPM good
Dredge very good
PTPM good
DRE very good
Call him good or very good as you prefer or maybe good to very good. All but one of the very goods lacked individual shot defense data.
Near max player? I guess it depends who you have / can get.
Post all-star raw plus-minus? BR says -1.1. Better than the pre-allstar -4 but not a mark that adds much lustre. April? Was he rolling at very end? No, -8.
Giannis at home for season? +2.3. On road, -8.3. Got a long way to go on that last mark to being a underdog playoff winner. Central division? -6.7. Those that see him and Bucks the most, handled.

Re: Expectations / advice for the Bucks
I think his biggest problem - one that might keep him from becoming elite - is his shooting ability. He's got a bit of an awkward, and quite slow, release. He seems good around the rim, but made
35% from 3-10 ft
28% from 10-16
25% of his 3s.
In a league that's shooting more and more 3s, that's probably an issue for a G/F. Opponent defenders can sag, etc.

Re: Expectations / advice for the Bucks
Bucks pre-season, -3 per game with Giannis on court, close to same with off. Box score metric, a bit above average but not much and aided by large role / opportunities.
Re: Expectations / advice for the Bucks
Teletovic had a bad pre-season. Giving huge money to Plumlee was not smart. Henson should be first big off bench. Maker's first minutes have been very weak.
Giannis at PG might payoff in 2 years but not right away with ill designed roster.
A radical, contrarian idea came to me for consideration: bring Giannis off the bench. Start Delly, Snell, Beasley, Parker and Henson. Bring in Giannis for most of the bench perimeter minutes and Monroe for the bigs. They probably aren't going to win the starter minutes but this set might defend better than last season and better than with Giannis and Monroe. They have a better chance to win the other minutes if Giannis and Monroe are going against subs. And maybe better getting the other guys going first? Play 5 of these 7 as much as possible. Hope to build familiarity, execution.
An 8th seed might be a goal, at least for awhile. Once that fades, start trading into a better design for the future.

Re: Expectations / advice for the Bucks
Loss of Zaza had "unexpected" impact on defense? I guess for those, in media, bleachers and front office who didn't read or value his plus 3.4 DRPM estimate in 2014-5.
