from the stephen shea article:
While real plus-minus (RPM) tries to adjust for context, the reality is every time Chris Andersen is getting on the court down there in Miami, he is playing with good players. Even if it’s not LeBron, he’s probably out there with somebody else, in a good system.
from the ages of 30-33 chris andersen's stats with denver were similar to those of shawn bradley, mark eaton, george t. johnson, and dikembe mutombo in the same age range. as a matter of fact when you combine the stats of those 4 defensive stalwarts in that age range and compare them to andersen in that same age range:
-MIN--min/g--ScFG%--touch/min--%shoot--%fouled--%TO--%pass--reb/48--%PF--%ST--%BS--pts/40---player
xxxx----28----.529--------0.50--------40-------15------11------34----14.2----12----1.8---6.0---10.3----4 players
4293----19----.597--------0.46--------39-------26-------8------27----14.1----11----2.8---5.8---12.0----chris andersen
you see that andersen had similar rates for rebounding and shot blocking but shot better overall with a lower rate of turnovers per touch, and was thus more efficient on offense. no advanced analytics needed to see this...
his rebounding/shot blocking stats his first 3 years with denver and his 3 years in new orleans weren't much different...
andersen was a heckuva player regardless of what team he was with, always a very good rebounder and shot blocker in combination. he has routinely generated wins at a high rate over the last decade because of this and his very good offensive efficiency...
his performance had nothing to do with a particular "system", and everything to do with chris andersen...

Rebounding and blocking shots have a bit to do with system but probably the least dependent, most individual. Offensive system and playing high usage top stars can help low usage players, including bigs. Andersen though hit 116 on Offensive Rating at age 26. He further cut back his NBA usage and got to 120 before and after his suspension. His performance in Denver in a similar role aside high usage guys surely played a big part in getting the job to do much the same thing in Miami with their big3. Some nbawowy.com analysis with and without a star or multiple stars in both Denver and Miami might help.

In 2013-14, Chris Andersen had a positive ORPM while big men like Duncan, M. Gasol and Howard were negative. The question is whether players like Duncan, M. Gasol and Howard could be + ORPM player if they played Andersen's minutes and were asked to play Andersen's role in Miami's offense last season? I suppose we can't know for certain, but if so, then ORPM is still somewhat dependent on context. That was my point. I have no problem with Andersen. I think he's a great defensive big off the bench.
