Statistical Trivia
Re: Statistical Trivia
5 of 6 youngest teams in west. But next 8 in east. 6 oldest split evenly by conference but next 4 in west. The rest near middle are evenly split. Big picture: west split towards extremes, east mostly in middle.
Re: Statistical Trivia
In Regular seasons plus playoffs, Steph Curry's 4618 3-pointers leads #2 James Harden by more than 1000.
Is this the biggest lead, by ratio, of #1 / #2, in any stat total? Not even:
https://www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/
Totals are NBA + ABA
OReb, DReb, Stl and Blk since 1974; TO since 1978
Kyle Lowry is the most prolific active player in Fouls, ranking #58 alltime. Then Paul, Westbrook, LeBron at #77.
Another measure of single-stat dominance is '"how many players have even half as many?"

A nice ESPN article on statistical milestones that players might reach this year.
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/460 ... kola-jokic
They don't specify Regular Season for these, so I'm adding the Playoff totals and re-ranking players.
"James ... can pass Abdul-Jabbar as the all-time leader in made field goals. James is 350 field goals away from Abdul-Jabbar's record (15,837)..."
"James can also pass Reggie Miller for sixth on the all-time 3-point field goal list ..."
"Durant ...[is] 849 points away from passing Wilt Chamberlain for seventh on the NBA's all-time scoring list...
James Harden, ... is only 603 points away from passing Carmelo Anthony for 10th and 910 away from passing Shaquille O'Neal for ninth."
https://www.basketball-reference.com/le ... eer_c.html
"Jokic, ...the Nuggets' triple-double maestro is just 18 away from passing Oscar Robertson (181) for the second most in NBA history, behind Russell Westbrook (203)."

Re: Statistical Trivia
So LeBron's last such multiple tripledouble in playoffs was 7 years ago.
Curry never multipe playoff tripledouble. Harden, Durant, Giannis,Tatum, SGA, Haliburton, Brunson, Edwards, Mitchell, Irving, Leonard, Sabonis, B Simmons, Paul never.
Payton Nash, Billups, Jordan, Billups, Ginobili, Cousy, Lever, G Hill, A Hardaway, Frazier, Jabbar, Baylor, Nowitzki, Webber, Russell, Pippen, Bryant never.
Do these guys have single cases? Yeah, some do. See list below. Jerry West, Stockton, Hakeem with one.
Not easy.
How many won the title that time vs. not? If I didn't miss up the count, 14 won, 35 did not. Less than 30% won. Helpful? Probably, most of time. Decisive? Not usually. Look & sound cool? Yeah. Enough to run many teams that way, despite the modest sounding return.
Highest and lowest average BPMs in those games or entire playoffs for this list?

75% of the top 20 on total playoff tripledoubles won a title at some point in career. A bit less for the regular season top 20.

Historic highs and lows in avg points per game in the NBA. Defined as plus or minus 3 ppg from previous high or low.
The longest uninterrupted trend is 14 years of declining offense, 1985 to 1999, with a loss of 19.2 ppg.
Before that, a 10-year climb (+8.2), and more recently an 11 year climb (+8.4) to a 60-year high in 2023.
In 8 seasons after the introduction of the shot clock (1955-62) scoring increased by nearly 50%.

Last night, Kawhi Leonard missed 2 FT for the first time this season (7/9)
It was the 3rd time this year he hit less than 90% in a game (4/5 , 6/7)
He still leads the league at .958 FT%.
Dividing his 23 game season-to-date roughly into quarters:
The first 6 are before his down-time, the rest are after.

Best Finals series since 1985, according to BPM & minutes.
bpmG = (BPM+5.25)*mpg/48
It's per game averages, so no difference if it went 4 games or 7. Top 100 are ranked.I was gonna list the top 100, but some years there was not a player for both teams; so I went to 150, and there was still one instance without a team showing anyone (Curry); so it's 180+ over 41 years, avg 4-5 per year.
65 of the top 100 Finals performances since 1985 are held by these repeaters:
* may have had more (probably) but not to be had in the search.

Re: Statistical Trivia
Thunders beat the Jazz in overtime last night while hitting just .184 from the arc. Not one player hit the league average.
They also hit .587 of 2FGA and 34/42 FT.
If all FT were on fouls unrelated to 3FGA, the combined TS% is .662
On .184 3fg, TS% = .276

Re: Statistical Trivia
Lightest weight at various heights:
The last column is the player's weight scaled to a 6 ft. version of their proportions.
Manute is listed at 200 lb on b-r.com, which may have been an early estimate; at a gaming site I found him at 225, which is still exceptionally thin.
Unlisted heights: e.g rookie AJ Johnson (6-5) is lighter than anyone 6-4 or 6-3, so those lines are omitted.
In the WNBA, DeWanna Bonner is listed at 6-4 and 140 -- equivalent to 6-0 and 119.
Probably all height and weight are questionable here, so the calcs could be off by even more.
Wembanyama is now listed at 225. Did he gain 15 pounds since last year?

Re: Statistical Trivia
Yesterday a Facebook post from Basketball-Reference.com noted that Joel Embiid has just passed their 15,000 career minutes threshold and now appears among their all-time leaders lists.
He is 2nd in career PER!
Of course being only 31 years old, his final career stats are likely to drop off, as in fact all of these older players did after that age.
On the left are career (to date) PER, and on the right are through age 31:
https://www.basketball-reference.com/le ... areer.html
* - Current players are thick in the top tier, and retired players (thru the top 30) were on avg 1.34 higher in PER at age 31.
Wilt, Kareem, Jordan, Shaq and others played well beyond their prime years. Curse of longevity.
At 5000+ minutes: Zion Williamson ranks 19th alltime (25.0) with exactly 7500 min.
Others rarely/briefly great: Robert Williams #56, Bill Walton #78, Daniel Gafford #80, Maurice Stokes #81 , all 5 to 10k min.
Embiid's last 2 seasons (total 40 games now) have PER around 22, so he is apt to drop behind Jordan any day now.
