Scanning the earlier and later Most/Least Improved lists, some players have gone through some serious re-evaluation, through half a season.
Using pages such as --
http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... lits/2011/
-- converting to per-36-minutes, we can discern some trends.
x = Pts+Reb+Ast+Stl+Blk-TO
Code:
Shaq mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% x
OcNov 22.8 10.5 7.9 3.4 7.6 1.3 .9 1.1 2.0 5.4 18.6 .663 31.0
Dec 18.8 9.6 7.3 1.7 5.6 .8 .4 2.1 4.2 6.9 16.9 .659 23.2
Jan 23.5 8.9 4.4 1.7 4.6 1.4 .8 2.8 2.0 4.7 14.7 .678 23.9

Hibbert mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% x
OcNov 30.3 15.8 4.8 3.8 7.5 3.6 .5 2.4 3.0 4.0 19.2 .535 34.1
Dec 27.8 14.3 3.4 2.4 6.3 2.8 .3 2.2 2.7 3.8 14.2 .448 25.5
Jan 20.7 15.9 2.5 3.0 9.7 1.7 .0 2.7 3.0 3.7 12.7 .373 26.8

OcNov 31.7 13.5 7.3 .1 2.9 7.5 1.2 .1 3.3 3.1 20.1 .603 28.6
Dec 31.5 14.7 6.7 .4 2.6 7.9 1.0 .1 3.2 2.7 18.2 .516 26.9
Jan 32.8 12.2 6.2 .4 1.5 9.2 1.6 .0 4.4 3.4 13.7 .460 22.1

Paul mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% x
OcNov 34.4 11.9 5.0 .5 4.4 10.8 3.1 .1 2.6 2.7 17.3 .612 33.6
Dec 35.5 11.7 4.6 .4 3.7 9.4 2.8 .0 2.5 2.4 17.0 .624 30.9
Jan 37.2 10.5 5.3 .3 2.5 9.0 1.9 .2 1.7 2.6 14.7 .571 26.9
Plagued by fouls and TO in Dec., Shaq seems to have fixed those areas. But he's also essentially stopped rebounding.

After flirting with All-Stardom earlier, Roy Hibbert has failed to find the basket (or the FT line) of late.

Devin Harris has lost his shot, now passes more, but with more TO.

As Chris Paul's minutes have risen, his every production has dropped.

Somehow the previous installment was entirely guys whose games have been slipping. Looking now for some on the rise.

LaMarcus Aldridge
Code:
per 36 minutes, unadjusted
mo. mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% sum
OcNov 39.3 15.0 4.0 3.4 4.1 2.2 1.1 1.1 2.1 3.0 16.8 .500 26.7
Dec 37.8 15.6 8.2 3.3 4.9 1.2 .9 1.4 1.3 3.0 19.5 .509 29.9
Jan 40.6 17.7 5.8 3.8 5.4 2.3 1.0 .6 2.8 2.2 22.1 .547 32.4

His January has been excellent. For the year, he's 14th in the West in Win Shares; just .142 WS/48 is 46th in the league.

Code:
David West per 36 minutes , unadjusted
mo. mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% sum
OcNov 32.7 16.5 4.5 2.3 5.0 2.1 1.2 1.0 2.1 3.7 20.5 .554 29.9
Dec 35.3 14.4 5.4 2.3 4.9 2.4 1.0 .7 1.7 2.7 19.6 .586 29.3
Jan 36.5 14.8 4.4 2.6 5.6 2.7 .8 1.3 2.7 2.7 19.0 .568 29.4

Scoring well from the outset, in subsequent months he's cut fouls, gotten to the FT line, and become beastly on the boards.
He's currently 8th in the West in Win Shares, 12th in WS/Min.

Code:
Kevin Martin
mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% sum
OcNov 33.4 15.9 9.1 .3 3.0 2.7 .6 .2 2.6 2.0 24.4 .613 28.6
Dec 29.3 18.2 10.8 .4 3.4 2.5 1.2 .2 2.5 2.6 29.4 .641 34.6
Jan 30.5 18.7 10.6 .6 2.7 2.9 1.3 .1 2.4 2.2 27.6 .589 32.7
If anything is indicated, it's perhaps that 30 min/G seems about right.
Close to one 'production' per minute (sum) is remarkable.

Code:
Kevin Durant
mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% sum
OcNov 40.5 18.8 7.9 .8 5.3 2.5 1.1 .9 3.1 1.8 24.3 .544 31.7
Dec 37.6 17.7 9.1 .5 4.9 3.2 1.0 1.2 2.9 2.0 28.1 .647 36.0
Jan 40.8 18.6 7.1 .6 6.0 2.1 .8 .6 2.6 2.2 25.9 .596 33.4
Another whose minutes should be reduced by a couple per game?
Durant's always been a slow starter and fast finisher. Before this year:
Code:
Kevin Durant per 36 min.
mpg FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts TS% sum
OcNov 36.6 18.5 6.7 1.0 4.1 2.4 1.1 .8 3.2 1.8 23.0 .537 29.2
Dec 37.9 17.5 6.7 .8 5.1 2.5 1.2 1.1 3.0 1.9 23.6 .574 31.2
Jan 38.2 17.9 7.7 1.1 5.4 2.7 1.0 .7 3.2 1.6 24.9 .585 32.7
Feb 37.8 18.1 8.1 .8 5.1 2.7 1.4 .8 2.7 1.7 25.0 .577 33.2
Mar 37.8 17.2 7.6 1.1 4.5 2.1 1.0 .8 2.7 1.6 24.3 .593 31.2
Apr 38.5 18.4 7.6 1.4 5.0 3.1 1.4 1.0 2.5 1.8 24.9 .571 34.4
His TO drop, his assists rise, he gets to the line more, his shooting improves, as the year progresses.

Within this group did Paul have the best late season turnaround and finish? How much did Aldridge fade, if he did?

I think so. Thanks for posting this.

By simple & crude "NBA efficiency" found at hoopsstats.com, Paul's best regular season month was March and he was much better still in the playoffs.

By the same measure, Aldridge fell up massively from his February peak with March equaling his worst regular season month and his playoffs were at the same lower level as March.
