I wrote an article on this topic as it relates to the Thunder at http://www.dailythunder.com. I was wondering if there have been any/many similar studies on this topic. It seems that individual player scoring/gamescore/usage corresponds to team wins in varying degrees, and not necessarily in ways that would seem obvious.
I used heatmaps to look for visual correlation. The games are ranked from top to bottom by winvalue = scoring margin + opponents average scoring margin.(i'm sure this has been done before and might have a different name).

Heatmaps scaled by individual player for Game Score:

Usage (scaled by game):

And points:

For Kristic, Harden and Sefolosha, the higher game score seems to lead to a higher liklihood of win (the regression coefficients back this up). For usage, Kristic's coefficient is significantly big and Westbrook's is significantly negative.

Code:

KD GSc 0.386330641
RW GSc 0.317682409
JG GSc 0.219499613
JH GSc 0.498777469
NK GSc 0.449908522
NC GSc 0.203568162
TS GSc 0.686468043
SI GSc -0.108438363
EM GSc 0.221643194
Code:

KD USG% 0.013721091
RW USG% -0.497871148
JG USG% 0.097609092
JH USG% -0.015625561
NK USG% 0.413128409
NC USG% -0.230186788
TS USG% 0.163922313
SI USG% -0.367319404
EM USG% 0.171638301

I know that these regressions don't account for many variables and cause and effect aren't easily parsed out. BUT...

Do you think these results mean anything? I think they indicate a lack of depth/consistency at the position/role in question. ie.) Thabo is an elite defender, so if he has a bad game the Thunder don't have a way to replace that, Harden is really the only good spot up shooter the Thunder have and he's not that consistent, Kristic is the only big who can score (collison and ibaka not so much).

I'd be interested to make these maps for a couple more teams, any suggestions on which?

Very interesting, Andy! I'm not sure how to interpret the results.

I'd be interested in seeing this for Boston, with so many good players.

it's a team sport so individual performance is just an icing to the team effort.
