Coaches and Front Offices Using APBRmetrics

New to the forum, first time posting, fascinated by the concept. Are there coaches and GM's that are known to have fully bought into APBRmetrics? Last year I caught an interview of Marquette coach Buzz Williams on the Jim Rome Show. Buzz was talking about paint touches, which isn't a typical statistical measurement in basketball. It made me wonder what other things he's looking at and who else is coaching/managing through a non-traditional perspective.

Many of those folks used to or still do frequent these parts.

The link Evan provided captures much but perhaps not all of the "analytic" staff resources of team. Some are probably still undercover, while others are simply not recognized yet as belonging on the list.

If the focus is strictly on direct personal use of analytics by Head Coaches and GM, it is hard to give an informed accurate answer from the outside.

Partly it depends on how broadly you define analytics or advanced analytics. If it includes more extensive recordkeeping, compilation, breakdown and analysis of game activity then the list might be larger than if you just focus on use of work involving high statistical technique.

Using a broad definition I might guess these Head Coaches and GMs to be at least among the most prominent users of analytics:

Head Coaches:

Carlisle
Spoelstra
(previously Triano)
(probably VanGundy and Rivers)

GMs

Morey
probably Ainge, Nelson, Chris Grant and Presti
(previously Cho)
(hard to say on a few others)

Cho was already hired again as GM--this time for the Charlotte Bobcats.

True.

Will he add analytic staff there and will analytics have as prominent a voice as in Portland? Probably and maybe.

BTW - if ANYONE knows any teams that can get ANY world leagues' stats (all the complete player box score type stats, and team ptsF/ptsO) - I'm available. I'll be more than happy to do my ratings for any of these leagues, since the ratings are easily adjustable to different league playing styles, pace, and recordkeeping (like how assists are a hard get in many leagues).

I'd be willing to do the work for free (at least to get our feet wet), and wouldn't make the results public. With all these teams drafting foreign, it seems that using something that can seperate some guys from the MASSIVE pack (incorporating their statistical footprint, team quality, pace, age, etc) would have to help. It could give the hint on who to get more videos of. Looking at a guys statistical lines (or watching a few hours of highlight footage) without fully understanding the context is fairly close to meaningless.

If teams don't seem to know about some college guys until late (some 1st rounders that rated HIGH in my college system all season were projected 2nd rounders until about a month or two ago - namely Klay Thompson, Vucevic, Shumpert, Faried, Norris Cole) - I can't even imagine how many youngish players world wide are being overlooked completely. I'd LOVE to look into it.

DraftExpress has TONS of league stats, Statman. Will they work?

Mark Cuban cited Rudy Fernandez's "top 20" Adjusted Adjusted +/- as support for the trade for him. Don't see that much in mainstream media stories.

I don't see him that high on any traditional APM or RAPM. He is generally above neutral but modestly. Are they still using Wayne Winston's version, a new source or citing old data? A small curiosity.

They don't have ALL of them - just the guys they deem worthy of being in their database.

In order to make it work - I'd need ALL the player stats in a league.

Cuban a few months ago made some comments that seemed to show he was getting away from the bball metric stuff (adj +/-, etc) - and back toward more basketball convention (coaching/scouting). It seemed like all those 50 win seasons but no ring was souring him - since the Mavs definitely leaned toward the advanced metrics earlier than most. Maybe the ring - achieved by a roster only a APBRmetrician could love - changed his tune back again?

I remember loving the Chandler aquisition (true post defense & rebounding). My only worry was his staying healthy (injuries had seem to sap his play along with his PT the previous two seasons). He had nice adj +/- numbers with a passing PG & a decent scoring PF with the Hornets. Most here in Dallas didn't care much at all about Chandler, many thinking he wasn't much of an improvement over Haywood. I feel slightly vindicated thinking back on a few arguments I had with some about it.

Statman, are you sure about DX not having all the player stats? I just looked up Biyombo's ACB team, and it lists 13 players. Were there more than that?

Rubio's team:

Well, let me look into it again - it was quite a while back when I tried to track down complete stats. Maybe things have changed for the better.
