All rates and totals (games, minutes) include playoff games.
Eff% = Points/(2*FGA + FTA). It's similar to TS% but penalizes more for missed FT.
An eff% higher than .527 has boosted a player's equivalent scoring rate (Sco); anything lower than .527 has diminished it.
Sco, Reb, and Ast are per 36 minutes and per 100 points and 44 rebounds per team per game. Other rates also per36.
T is a weighted sum of the other rates: Sco, Reb, Ast, Stl, Blk, minus TO and PF. An average player is about 23. 40 is super.
po/rs is the player's career playoff T rate, divided by his regular season T. Average is about .94
pog is the fraction of career minutes which have been playoffs. Average is about .07
NBA and ABA titles are awarded the equivalent of another 10 playoff games, and playoff minutes weigh more heavily.
A versatility index is an additional factor.

Players who were in the ABA have their stats discounted, or "taxed", with a different rate applied to each season.
A 20-and-10 guy from the inaugural 1967-68 ABA is judged to be about a 12-7 player in the NBA of 1968.
From the 1972 ABA, 20-10 is more like 18-9 in the NBA. That is assuming the player gets the same minutes.
Steals and Blocks are not known for NBA players before the 1973-74 season; nor turnovers before 1977-78. So that players can be ranked from all eras, I've created fictitious numbers: steals based on assists, blocks based on rebounds.
For a handful of old-timers with reputations, I've boosted Blk from the estimate (Wilt, Russ, Nate).
Estimated turnovers are more complicated, but any act of handling the ball is correlated.

The playoff/season production ratios (po/rs) don't specifically boost or punish career status, but they help determine the magnitude of a player's postseason career.
On an annual basis, Bill Cartwright (#300 in table above) didn't really have playoff numbers just 77% of his regular seasons, it's just that most of his playoffs were past his prime years. He was relatively great for the Knicks (when they were bad) and mediocre later with the Bulls.
(This is sometimes called 'the Cartwright effect', though it was earlier an issue regarding Wilt and Oscar, for examples.)
The column shown as pog, the percent of a player's career (minutes) which were in playoff games, indicates how good his teams were. Players for bad teams don't get playoff minutes, but in their regular seasons, they're likely to have gotten more minutes than if they'd been on better teams. Probably more shots and rebound opportunities, as well.
By giving extra weight to playoffs, the rankings punish players who rack up big numbers for bad teams, while rewarding contributions made to better teams. And if playoff series are won, more playoff minutes (and productions) accrue.
The playoff sub-career is thus a proxy for "team play", "clutch play", or "intangibles".

The 4th set of 100 has a lot of long names.

If anyone wants to, it's very easy to move all of this to an Excel spreadsheet.
Just select and copy to Notepad. Save the file and note the location.
In Excel, under Data, Get External Data From Text. Select your Notepad file.
Excel should recognize the format as Fixed Width -- in columns. Leave this turned on, and proceed.

As a spreadsheet you can sort alphabetically, by most games, best rebounders, etc.
One can find players who were, for example, better rebounders than Bob Lanier.
Next, you can see who among these were also better scorers. And so on.
Eventually you may find only a handful who were better at everything.

In the 400s, some long-time role players, some better players with shorter careers, some up-and-comers.

Games and minutes per game are shown, and these largely explain why some 'better' players are ranked among 'lesser' players. All else equal, it's better to do your job for a longer time, per game or per career.
Actually, from seasons before the modern 82-game schedule, players' regular season totals are boosted to 82-game equivalents. In a 64-game season, George Mikan's 'equivalent rebounds' are further boosted by the factor 82/64 (1.28125).

As we have moved downward through the ranks, it's less common to find players with po/rs above 1.00 or pog above .10 .
Both of these factors -- playoff/regular season production ratio and fraction of minutes in playoffs -- are partly due to luck, and partly due to the individual's tendency to 'step up' (or not) in playoffs.
In general, a player isn't terribly lucky or unlucky over a whole career. Some will be drafted into a dynasty, but they still have to be the right kind of players.

In the next batch, we'll see more average (T = 23) and below-avg players, though most were above-avg for some part of their career.

Players who never appeared in any playoffs have been assigned the average po/rs ratio of .93
It may be clear from the bottom of this list that Defense is undervalued in this rating system. The only counter-argument I have at present is that without great D, players like Bowen and Dunn would never have been in the league; and that just by being on the court for long minutes, they eventually accumulate significant points, rebounds, etc.

As always, I'm looking for errors in the lists. Able readers are encouraged to inform us of possible or likely mistakes.
Again, these lists total regular seasons and playoffs, so differences with official totals (G, Min) are inevitable.

With all the standardizing adjustments mentioned above -- and likely some not mentioned -- players' career total equivalents can be generated.
Playoffs and regular seasons are summed together for these rankings.
Top 30 career equivalent points, rebounds, assists, along with per 36 minute rates:

The standards to which all players' rates are compared are 100 points and 44 rebounds per team (and opponent) per game.
These are rather arbitrary norms, but the idea is to level the playing field for everyone.

I looked at just the top 200 careers. The highest po / rs ratio by this measure and in this group was Baron Davis. Only two of the top 10 on po / rs in this group won titles (I Thomas and JJ White), while in the next 10, 9 did. The guys not rewarded with a title for their improvement were: Alvin Robertson, Anfernee Hardaway, Bernard King,Tracy McGrady, Mickey Johnson, Steve Francis, Gus Williams and, in the second ten, Derrick Coleman.

Rondo has the 2nd best po / rs in this group amongst active players. Ben Wallace, Dwight Howard, Billups and Richard Hamilton are the only other qualified actives players above 1.02.

Only 18% of the top 200 were above 1.02. Just over 10% were below .90.

I was surprised Payton was in the bottom 10 on po / rs in this group. Rodman was in the bottom 20 and Chamberlain in the bottom 30. Of course one should also look at actual playoff performance level and measures of defense and not just po / rs.

In the column marked pog is the fraction of a player's career minutes which were in playoff games. Note that Baron Davis is at .06 (actually .056) in this. He's just 50th in career playoff minutes, 28th in RS min., among players active this past season. One appearance in 7 years (and he kicked ass).

Another stat I've tracked, not shown in the tables, is cumulative annual po/rs ratio. This differs from (career PO)/(career RS). That simple ratio doesn't tell us how much a player stepped up in a typical year, but is conflated with whether his best seasons were followed by his deepest playoffs.

Easier to illustrate with side by side comparison. Separated into blocks of career playoff minutes:

Code: Select all

po/rs 3500-8000 min p/r2 po/rs 2000-3500 min. p/r2 po/rs 1400-2000 min. p/r2

Annual po/rs is called p/r2.
The Pistons didn't collect a bunch of playoff overachievers so much as they got them all in their primes. Tayshaun's p/r2 is a bit inflated by his first appearance, when he followed a very weak rookie year with a substantial playoff. [Sheed's numbers were .93 and .91 ]

In general, po/rs is more appropriate for determining the 'size' of a playoff career -- and most players (and fans) probably agree that it's 'better' to have your biggest playoff runs while you're in your prime -- while p/r2 is more apt for determining players who have tended toward over- or under-achievement in their typical playoffs.
And then there are untypical years, as with that rookie Prince example.

Note the averages for each column. We get a similar trend when we sort by overall top 100 vs 100-200, etc. Better players are less dinged by playoff competition, and scrubs tend to disappear.

For completeness, here's the rest of the lot, same format:

Code: Select all

.946 average .926 .900 average .866 .904 average .907
Some of those in the final columns are represented by a single playoff run. Maggette did well with his; Monta did not.
Kevin Martin's big disparity is due to following a mediocre year (2006) with a nice playoff; but relative to his career averages (po/rs), it's not so nice.

A good point among the several good observations.
Assuming you mean opposing D's. This would be a good project for someone with great database capabilities. Maybe Neil at b-r.com has already done so?

Opponent-specific adjustments would probably give a break to Garnett, though in the last few years perhaps his playoff opponents have been more average. For several years in Minny, he led a 7 or 8 seed against #1 or 2, and you know the rest.

I'm not sure opponent D is more significant than general opponent strength. Earlier this year, I rated team playoff performances vs their opponents' SRS, and presumably individuals could have their numbers similarly adjusted.
Sixers' performances vs +6.8 Miami should not perhaps be judged the same as Magics' play vs -1.1 Atlanta.

There's a significant difference between West and East playoff average declines over the last 10-12 years. In the East, a high seed's 1st round opponent is often a below-avg team.

Yes the relative quality of team defense faced in the playoffs could vary some and affect the po / rs ratios. But I was mainly thinking about the variation in the individual shot defense of the listed players themselves compared to effectively using a team average to assess shot defense performance and treating every player equally on this element because of a shared responsibility assumption, regardless of on-off opponent shooting / scoring numbers and where the opponent scoring actually occurs and who is "most responsible" for it.

Great stuff Mike G. Do your adjusted stats factor in changes in league FG% and Ast%?

Yes, the annual league-wide Ast/FG ratio has varied quite a bit, especially before 1970 or so.
For seasons before that, I have multiplied players' Ast/36 by a factor that splits the difference between a season's Ast/FG and a historic average.
In later decades, the annual variation is minimal, so I dropped this adjustment.

It's possible and likely that there is an occasional sea change in the quality of the league's point guards, and that at such a time scorers may be pretty much on their own. There's a big dis-continuum in the Ast/FG ratio from 1956 to 1957; at least part of this is due to mass retirement, injury, and etc, to many passing guards.

Now, league FG% (and eFG%) has also changed a lot, mostly increasing over the years. Many have argued that a player's FG% should be judged relative to that year's NBA avg FG%. I find no fault with this argument. But instinctively, I believe a player largely creates his own FG%, independently of what everyone else does.

In 1950, Mikan shot .407 FG% while leading the league in scoring; Alex Groza shot .478 while finishing 2nd in scoring.
Bob Cousy was perennially all-NBA first team with a FG% ranging from 35 to 39%. Then Oscar came along and shot some .120 higher.

It may be that better defense is the only consideration in lower league FG%, but I doubt it. Sophistication tends to evolve for the better on both sides of the ball.

Now it stands to reason that when a rule is changed, like hand-checking enforcement, that .550 TS% is no longer elite but merely good. I might worry about that if it seemed there were whole extended eras of relatively easy/difficult scoring. But it seems the pendulum swings before long, and the league adjusts to excessive advantage on defense or offense.

Since I rate Scoring as relative to opponent scoring, players who adjust and adapt to league trends are still going to get credit for scoring x% of what their opponents scored. When your shooting% is higher, you are going to get proportionally more points. And then you're further rewarded by a factor like (Eff%/.527) .

More to the point, a league's FG% (or eFG% or TS%) is not a relevant standard to compare a player's FG%, etc.
It really matters what % the league shoots in the games that player participates in.

In 1990, the NBA shot .474 FG%. Nuggets' opponents shot .512 . Which FG% is relevant to Orlando Woolridge's .498 ? He's above league avg in games where he is not defending, and he's below the league at times when he is defending.

Because 1990 Enver allowed 131 Pts/G, their players' per36 scoring is reduced by the factor 100/131 -- they only scored 76% as much per 36, per game, per 100 points by the league.

Woolridge's .560 eff% brings back some of his Sco rate, but the factor 560/527 (1.06) is just 1/4 of what is lost by allowing an alltime record [opponents] PPG.

Your last post is a little confusing. Just to clarify, you use team and tm opponent eFG% instead of league eFG%, correct?

I use effective shooting %, defined as
Eff% = Points/(2*FGA + FTA). It's similar to TS% but penalizes more for missed FT.
This helps determine a players effective scoring rate.
Until recent seasons, per36 scoring for a 36 mpg player was :
Sco = Pts/G * Eff%/.527
And for other MPG, the fourth root of (mpg/32) is a factor, to diminish rates for those with fewer than 32 mpg.

In recent seasons, the formula has gotten more complex, with an exponent applied to (Eff%/.527), an estimate of competition vs starters, etc. Team and opponent Eff% are a small part of that process.

If or when I ever settle on a final version, perhaps before, I may redo bygone seasons. But there wouldn't be any great upheaval in the rankings.

My main point is that I wouldn't use league average as a standard, except to rank teams against one another. Individuals are not playing in league-average conditions, but are in the context of their team's and opponents' averages.

OK, but Eff% factors in free throw%, which isn't affected by league environment. Pace and opposing defenses have no effect on FT%, unlike eFG%; I would have expected an adjustment for the latter, but not the former.

Eff% incorporates both frequency and accuracy of scoring attempts. On one team, a player may get more FTA than he would on another team, will make about the same FT%, and may have the same Eff%

Again, who cares what league environment is? Nobody plays for a hypothetical average team. Each game has a scoring and rebounding pace, and a team has season averages for these.

Analogous is Reb% -- a player's rebounds per 100 in the games he's played. This is specific to his team. It doesn't matter what the league averaged in a given year.
