I'm in need of stats detailing a breakdown of "most frequent recipients" of NBA career and yearly assist leaders. For instance, if you traced John Stockton's assist distribution, obviously Karl Malone would be his top "assist recipient."

If anyone knows of a way to find or filter info like that I'd appreciate your help.

For recent years you could use one of the play by play datasets and find the most frequent recipients with precision if it was worth it to you.

82games had this article for 2004-5. http://www.82games.com/feeders.htm

There might be other stray posts or articles that found this data or estimated it in a handful of cases. You probably could make the right guess though most of the time just from the easily available data of shots taken and a few broad experience based assumptions about % assisted for different shot locations (from league level data at hoopdata) and the players / positions who take them and who had the assists to give out and how they were likely arrayed. For players earlier than 5-10 years ago you'd very likely have to make guesses, not having the PBP alternative, unless perhaps it was covered in a Harvey Pollack Statistical Yearbook or maybe a Hollinger Prospectus.

FCMorris,

Hoopism.com (where my bro and I do stat visualizations) will have a feature up on monday with an interactive visualization for the 09/10 data of who's assisting who. I have the raw numbers for that season (you can use Basketballgeeks.com play by play to get the numbers. Here's an example image. I will post here when I get the app up on Monday.

I'll put a csv with the numbers as well for you.

MattB, very cool! I love your site. Thanks for posting about Google Refine. That looks like it can be very useful for a lot of stuff. Do you know if it lets you save a template filter, so that you can repeat a certain workflow (for example, extracting pbp data)?

Hey Evan, thanks!

I, like most people here, have 100 sites I get data from. I wanted to see if there was enough intelligence to tie some of the formats together into a more cohesive source. I'm not sure how useful it would be for that.

What it does seems great at is scrubbing data (fill in gaps, normalize fields, get external sources (like from wikipedia)). It also does have a record feature for operations that can be applied to other datasets. The demos show how to use it to translate formatted data (wikimarkup, html) into a DB fields.

So there's still work to be done defining the operations, but it's very promising.

Have you looked at this season or playoffs and the Finalists specifically? Does either team do a documented good job of disrupting the opponents biggest assist paths in general or do so against each other in particular?
