Eastern conference rooks are on pace to gather 23 eWins by season's end.
West is pointing at 29 equivalent wins generated, from play thus far, projected to 82 games (e82).
Last year on this date, rookies projected to 67 eWins, and they went on to get 92.
If this year's early returns -- 52 projected eWins -- are the same 37% low, they'll wind up around 71 total.
According to this thread --
http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics/vi ... 5&start=63
-- 71 rookie eWins would be about the median over the last 8 years' rookie classes.
[Edit: original post excluded Blake Griffin, who alone accounts for 1/4 of West rookies' eWins.]

Griffin now listed and tied for first.
As for depth of quality:
Last season 15 over 2.5 eW. Assuming a similar inflation by 37% over the season it appears 11 might get there this season.
Last season 31 over 1.0 eW. Assuming a similar inflation, it appears 19 might get there this season.
At least a weaker start to the season and maybe will be a weaker season for this draft class compared to the last one (and the draft class who first played in 2008-9). Though I guess it appears toward the high-end of that seen in the draft classes who first played in 2003-4 to 2007-8.

Only big difference in ranking between eW/484 min and EZPM100 that I see is Cousins with EZPM100 ranking him 25 spots lower.
The three biggest reasons why EZPM is different I think are:
1) Splitting the credit for opponent missed shots / defensive rebounds between all defenders and the defensive rebounder and mostly to the defenders instead of giving it all to the defensive rebounder.
2) Considering counterpart rebounding and the way that likely reduces the boost that big men would otherwise get in a metric that doesn't position adjust for rebounding (as would be the case with eW/484 to my memory).
3) The inclusion of team shot defense while actually on the court instead of using overall team defense appears to be another significant factor hurting Cousins' ranking given his negative on/off team defensive efficiency.

Thanks, these are all good to know.
But if Cousins is not even among the 25 best rookies, he's one of the worst rookies in the league. I see he's 24th in WS/48 and 12th in PER --
http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... i?id=mTcD8
Both these stats are gaga over a high shooting% and low TO. Some highly rated guys are getting very little playing time. Cousins shoots badly (.476 TS%) and often. His teammates have shot .038 better, and he's brought team shooting down about .005 .
He's just about tied with Tyreke Evans for most scoring attempts per minute, and leads Sac in scoring rate ('Reke shoots even worse). He's clearly gotten some minutes based on his potential, and he's far from ready for prime time.
Some other unspectacular rookie WS/48 rates of this Century:
LeBron .078, Durant .040, Westbrook .035, Deron Williams .059, Gay .011 .
Cousins is one of 10 NBA players with TReb% and Pts/36 both greater than 16.5 -- others being Boozer, Howard, Griffin, Love, Zach, Garnett, Horford, Duncan, Bynum.

In addition to the rebounding, one thing I like about Cousins is his ability to get unassisted field goals (which ezPM likes). His low shooting percentage combined with relatively high usage are what put him way down on my list. But I suspect if he gets his head together and matures a bit, he'll be very productive in the future.

"High usage" also indicates his role as a go-to player, who can create a shot, and which his team is apparently in need of.
What is his unassisted% ? My estimator has him at .56; only Jeter (.69) is guessed as higher, on the Kings.
In another thread, Cousins appeared among players who have started roughly half their games. His splits, per 36, derived from -
http://www.basketball-reference.com/pla ... lits/2011/
Code:
Demarcus
Cousins mpg TS% FGA FTA OReb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts X
start 27.4 .512 16.9 5.8 3.2 7.2 2.7 .8 1.0 2.9 5.5 19.9 32.0
sub 24.0 .430 14.2 5.5 4.2 7.0 1.7 1.3 .7 4.0 6.0 14.3 25.2
X is just a sum of other rates (- TO, PF*0)
From that same page, an even starker contrast in (8) wins and (28) losses:
Code:
per 36 minutes
mpg TS% FGA FTA ORb DRb Ast Stl Blk TO PF Pts X
W 28.1 .591 14.7 6.9 3.4 7.4 3.5 1.3 .5 3.7 5.4 21.0 33.3
L 25.7 .441 16.1 5.4 3.5 7.0 1.9 1.1 1.1 3.6 5.6 16.3 27.2
This last table includes a few more outings.
The Kings are 7-9 when he makes at least half of his FGA, 1-19 when he doesn't.
Of course, these wins are almost all vs bad teams. But when Cousins has hit over 60% of his FT, the team is 7-11, vs 1-17 when he doesn't.

62% (in fact, he leads the league among PF/C in %Unassisted)
BTW, if it makes a difference in your metric, I can give you data for assisted vs. unassisted on 2pt and 3pt field goals.

Thanks; I will take you up on that later.
But I will point out that the Kings are one of the best at holding the line on home assist inflation -- awarding their players only .51 Ast/FG at home, vs .55 on the road. Their H/A ratio is .93
Chances are, in a typical scorekeeping environment, they'd be recording about 4.5% more assists than they have to date.
Which means Cousins' FG would be about 4.5% more assisted than you think, based on official counts. That puts his %Assisted at about .59 (rather than .62), if you accept this logic.

Wasn't it argued convincingly (by Dean Oliver, among others) that home stat biases are largely impossible to dissociate from increased home performance?
One would imagine less turnovers and more field foals made at a home court anyways, increasing overall assists.

If I understand Mike correctly, what he's saying is that SAC is awarding even less assists at home than away. If home teams generally have more assists, than it it makes that disparity even larger than it appears.
Right? Confused

Right, probably.
The home/away disparity isn't in the number of FG or Ast, but in the ratio.
The Kings average 37.0 FG at home and 37.1 on the road.
Only 18.7 Ast at home, and 20.3 on the road.
Their road Ast/FG is just about the league average (road) Ast/FG, .547 .
At home, for whatever reason, it's just .505 .
Unless they are passing less at home, it could be presumed that their home scorekeepers are just not very liberal with awarding assists.
And indeed, in Sacramento, opponents have had assists on .523 of FG.
In their own arenas, these opponents have had Ast/FG of .580 vs the Kings. This, too, is about average for teams at home.
Sac: 505/547 = .923 H/A
Opp: 523/580 = .901
So the Kings' scorekeepers are relatively stingy with assists; even stingier for opponents than for their homies (which is normal).
How does one apply this information to player stats? My assumption is that a player's road assist rates are 'real', and that the ratio of away/home Ast/FG should be applied to home assist totals.
Then the away assists are added to 'adjusted' home assists, to get adjusted assist total.
Then the assist rate is redetermined from this total.
Individual home/away splits are available, but they're more work than just applying team home/away to every player (on a team) equally.

In theory, I could easily extract home and away assists for every player from the PBP data. I'll put that on my todo list.

Warning: This will be an oblique description at best.
While e82 is already a projection (to the full 82 game season) of collective rookie eWins, there always seems to be a season-long progression in which rookies get more minutes and play better.
Looking at a couple of earlier threads in which I (sporadically) reported rookie-class e82 totals:
http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics/vi ... php?t=2395
http://sonicscentral.com/apbrmetrics/vi ... php?t=1952
... copying end-of-month projection totals, for comparison (and extrapolation) to this year.
Code:
eWins '11 '10 '09 '09 '10 avg 2011?
Nov 55 74 90 .88 .80 .84 65.2
Dec 64 84 86 .84 .91 .88 72.9
Jan 68 84 89 .87 .91 .89 76.2
Feb 73 86 92 .90 .93 .92 79.5
Mar 89 96 .94 .97 .95
Apr 92 102 1.00 1.00 1.00
The first set of (3) columns shows the monthly e82 projections; after Apr we see the actual season total eWins.
2008-09 rookies started with a bang, dipped a bit, then surged in the last weeks.
2009-10 rookies jumped (Dec) to nearly the '09 level, leveled off, then picked up at the finish.
This year's group has just steadily increased their impact month by month.
The second group of (3) columns tracks the end-of-month projection relative to the final tally.
The final column shows the, uh, compound projection for this year, based on 2 previous years'.
For example, previous 2 years' November projections were .88 and .80 -- avg .84 -- of the final tally.
So this year's Nov reading (55) is divided by .84 to suggest 65.2 .
Because this year's rookies started so slowly before improving, each month gives a more favorable projection.
