It likely will take another year or two for the Mavs to move more fully to their new young core of the future. As of now that future core is Smith, Brunson, Barnes, Doncic, Kleber and Powell. Last season the most used lineup for Mavs used 3 (Smith, Barnes, Kleber). It was horrible. Probably more because of Kleber than the other two. 3.5 minutes per game for season The next most used lineup that had 3 of these guys played 1.5 minutes per game. It had Powell, not Kleber and did great. Nothing else had 3 of these guys and was tested over about 1 minute per game. So going into season, Mavs know little about how lineups with a majority of future core guys do.
This season it would seem to be appropriate to PLAN to use a far bigger amount of time with at least 3 of these guys in them. Tests with 4 or possibly 5 are important. Lineups with Smith, Barnes, Doncic and probably Powell are imo obviously the ones that should be tested the most. Some of these guys likely won't belong in future core. But need as much testing this season to sort that out then ramp way up minutes for whatever the future core is judged to be next season. Then adjust and move even further in the direction of an effective big minute core lineup or rotation.
Smith-Barnes-Kleber sucked generally as a trio not just in one lineup. Give Kleber some look with these core guys but it needs to look a lot better to continue. Trios of S & B with Powell and the associated pairs are mildly negative but may be salvageable. Have to try unless / until Barnes and / or Smith reach point where their performance and fit issues seem unsolvable and they should be traded. Which seems pretty likely to me. But test & try to make it work.
Doncic is the centerpiece of the core. Will try many years to make it work around him. Brunson is probably a second unit guy but try different things and keep an open mind for awhile.

Powell rebounds and shot / scored more efficiently last season. His matchup data is general weak from low usage. His RPM has gone from bad to middling to good last season. Trust it? I dunno. Would have to study deeper. If it went back to middling, he might become a trade candidate. Depends on team performance with Doncic. Can they play together effectively? Find out. Has been mostly used as a Center. Only lightly at PF. It is probably not good enough to stay with but see what happens early this season.
