B-R.com still has their Playoff Probabilities page up:
https://www.basketball-reference.com/fr ... _prob.html
They say Celtics have a 57% chance of winning the Finals, GS 43%. This is likely calculated from their regular season SRS (simple rating system = margin of victory + strength of schedule).
Meanwhile, 15 of 20 ESPN Experts are picking the Warriors --
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/339 ... on-celtics
What accounts for this discrepancy? Are the Dubs doing much better in the playoffs? Do they have stronger personnel now than in the regular season?
Round-by-round :

Mem 0.67 5.37 6.04
Dal 8.60 3.12 11.72
---------------------------
tot 5.76 3.55 9.31
sos in a given round is just that opponent's season SRS. Here it seems GS has been about half a point better; and they have the home court advantage.
Another way to compare their relative playoff strength is with BPM. This metric accounts for the actual lineups used. If a regular player is missing (Middleton) or an irregular star is present (Irving), the season SRS is not as relevant.

I seem to recall that 4.2 is a better multiplier than 5.0, to predict a team's pts/100 vs average.
For whatever reason, the Celts look better -- and more consistent. Dubs lost that one game to the Grizz by 50, and maybe that's all it is.
Note: I gave each series equal weight; so a short series counts just as much as a long one in these ratings.
Bos' weakest series was their shortest one (4 G vs Brk); Dubs' weakest was also their longest (6 G vs Mem). If each game counted equally, this would help the Celts' overall rating and hurt the Dubs.
Celtics in 6.

Celtics are favored to win the Finals in the FiveThirtyEight RAPTOR-based Forecast (~80%) and ESPN NBA BPI (87%), essentially a sweep or at most 5 games.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/20 ... edictions/
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/page/B ... ayoff-odds
Assuming nothing changes, both projections have GSW losing Game 1 (~47% vs. 40%, respectively) as the closest game in the series.

Thanks for these links!
The 538 Raptor projection says Bos wins .78 of home games and .56 of away games -- but for that .53 likelihood in G1. No explanation -- Dubs give up?
Chance of a Celtics sweep are 18% with these odds, 41% that they win in 4 or 5.
Their Elo system has Celts winning .47 in GS and .74 at home. With this, it's just 12% for a sweep and 31% in 4 or 5 -- almost as likely the Dubs win.
I don't know what to make of the ESPN BPI, and apparently neither do 20 Experts who work there. Part of the formula is "preseason expectations". Really?
Don't see home/away split, just .862 likelihood Boston wins. If they are .82 at home and .584 on the road, it sums to .862

Bos in 6 is most likely outcome in all these.

eWins per 480 minutes adheres to 1.00 as average
for the series. BPM shows that on average, a player on the floor in this series is about 2.2 pts/100 better than NBA avg. This translates to say an e480 of about .60 (or WS/48 of .060) in this series is NBA avg.
It's a tough environment!

Those Horford and Smart FMVP betting odds are looking good, especially if it ends up being a short series (that is, less opportunities for Tatum and Brown to have great games).

Stephen Curry leads the Warriors, and he is overdue for a Finals MVP. He's been robbed once already, eclipsed by a teammate twice, and got some recent vindication with the inaugural WCF-mvp.
And in this run back to the Finals has he really been the biggest influence in any series? Here are the top 5's in each round, Dubs and opponents:

... In 7 game playoff series since 1984, when the home team loses Game 1, they still are likely to win the series. Needing to win 4 of 6, they have done so 61 times and failed 57 times.
In the 2-2-1-1-1 home-away format, teams in the Warriors' current shape are 57-54; and only once has it occurred in the Finals: In 1984, the Celtics lost at home to the Lakers and still won the title.
In the 2-3-2 format, there were 7 such situations; most recently, 2013, the Heat lost the opener to the Spurs yet prevailed in 7.

Two games in, and Curry is far and away the most valuable player on either team. Horford for FMVP is becoming more of a possibility if BOS ends up winning.
I have not been surprised by OPJ’s impact this playoffs — he is one of the best wings in the NBA and will be one of hottest free agents this offseason.
However, I (and I don’t think anyone) expected Looney to be performing as well as as he is, especially against players (Powell, Williams, Horford) who most observers would have considered as good if not clearly better, at least either offensively or defensively, as him.

Looney was among the 20 most-improved players relative to last season, if you look at that thread. He added about 3 pts and 3 reb per 36 from last year.
And in the OP in this thread, it seems he has stepped up in each series -- starting slowly against Jokic, getting stronger each round.
He was very good in 2019, then missed at least half of the next 2 seasons. He's just back to his previous trajectory.
Otto Porter is a similar story, 4 years ago on an all-star path in Washington, then 3 mostly lost years, on the scrap heap in Orlando before the Dubs got him for pennies on the dollar. Now with career high Reb%, career low Usg%, his TS% is back to pushing .600.
He had abysmal stats vs Den, much better vs Mem, and sensational since then -- when he's been available. (see OP)
According to GameScore, Horford's had his 2nd-best and next-to-worst games of the postseason. Ranked against his full season of games, same/same.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/pl ... elog/2022/
Now a best of 5, with 3 games in Boston, Celts given a 60-40 edge at b-r.com

Curry continues to distinguish himself among both teams, but BOS is in control despite the inconsistent play of their starters. Considering how much of the pre-Finals discussion around him was about how much he “should” get/have an NBA FMVP, I wonder if his great performance still plays a role in the voting if GSW ends up losing, even in a short series.
Horford seemed to have been shaping up (supported by the “wins” stats above) as the Celtic’s front runner for NBA FMVP, but the popular discussion I have seen seems to have shifted heavily to Brown. Horford had two net positive impact games (Gm. 1, Gm. 3) and one net negative one (Gm. 2), whereas all of Brown’s 3 games have been overall positive. At the same time, Horford’s cumulative contribution based on the box-score numbers appears to be greater than Brown. (Maybe plus/minus data shows something different?) Assuming Horford keeps playing like this, I don’t see a good reason not to give him the FMVP.
Porter Jr. has been huge for the Warriors, but outside of Gm. 1, he can’t get more than 20 min. on the floor from Kerr. Looney is another weird decision whereby he is getting less of a role despite his awesome production.

Inconsistency from game to game will normally "come out in the wash" of aggregate statistics. But in this series so far, there's a low-to-zero correlation between Celtic minutes and all the b-r.com stats. For the Dubs, the correlations are very negative!
Celts top 4 are the same 4 in all these, in various orders:

per-Wins PER bpm-Wins BPM
.30 Brown 18.5 .40 Horford 7.3
.29 Horford 20.1 .30 Tatum 2.4

Marcus Smart makes defensive plays and scores tough baskets. He could be the dark horse here. The next Iguodala.
