the Jokic Effect

Denver shoots a lot better and isn't worse anywhere, with Nikola Jokic on the floor. Compare their first 13 games to their last 3, with Joker in sick bay:

Code: Select all

Nuggets G ORtg DRtg FTr TS% Reb%
w Jokic 13 117.1 114.8 .241 .605 51.7
w/o Jokic 3 106.3 116.9 .228 .545 50.4
A dropoff of 11 pts/100 poss. mostly due to shooting, perhaps slightly due to rebounds and free throws.

Of course, 3 games is a small sample. The last few years it keeps getting more pronounced. From the On/Off pages:

Code: Select all

Nuggets - - with Jokic - - without Jokic -
year eFG% TO% ORtg eFG% TO% ORtg
2022-23 .605 .132 124.1 .521 .184 105.2
2021-22 .578 .149 118.8 .518 .146 108.8
2020-21 .573 .130 121.4 .517 .158 108.1
2019-20 .542 .141 115.0 .522 .140 111.1
... etc.

It could be that 'garbage time' influences these numbers. If it's not essentially the same teammates taking shots, it's not apples to apples.
Jokic was getting minutes in 2016 but only started passing a lot in 2017. Here are his primary shooting mates' rates in those 6+ years, with the final column being their eFG% in their careers without Jokic:

Offensive Rating includes turnovers. Playing with the Joker, you don't have to do much of the creating.
