Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

The Heat seemed to underrate the three-point line until the playoffs started. The Heat's best line-ups had two wing players who could stretch the floor alongside their Top 3 players. And one of their top 3 players, Bosh, also stretched the floor, whether it was with the corner 3, or as the main pla...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

I interpreted the findings of my research analyzing the distribution of various statistical categories to draw some conclusions about how to best build a team that will be greater than the sum of its parts. Excuse me but I have to... how your concept will help to create a team GREATER than the sum ...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

I think Rondo might be an exception to the rule. First, he's not a significant threat to score outside of his ability to get to the rim (which is something he is rather good at, despite the fact that defenders slack off of him because of his weak, though improving, jump shot), yet he's one of the be...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

Your data supports a high usage initiator more than a high assist concentration in that guy. That would be good news for Westbrook and the Thunder if they had other guys well capable of and making passes for assists. This much of the analysis can be used to support Kobe being Kobe, given his assist...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

Maybe. I was making a quick and blunt assessment. I am all for greater precision if you have the time to do it. The bottomline will remain that some good playoff teams are out of step or not really leaders on this fundamental shot distribution issue. I agree. It would be odd if every team had the s...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

What if we looked at the 3PTA/FGA of the most efficient teams offensively rather than playoff teams? Good point. That brings it back up a bit to 10 of 16 playoff teams in the top 16 in the regular season on 3PTA/FGA. But that is not real high. Thanks for looking into that. Adding to that point, tea...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

I think the NBA is promising public access to lineup data that breaks down each statistical contributions by player in the future. I don't think anyone currently offers it. I would imagine Evan with his coding skills probably could though. ESPN with Dean's assistance could too perhaps. I know Evan ...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

"Everybody knows that it makes sense to take more 3s" but only 8 of the playoff teams were in the top 16 on 3 pt attempts and 3PTA / total FGA. 1) Well, we're just talking about offense here, and defense factors in as well. What if we looked at the 3PTA/FGA of the most efficient teams off...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

So you concentrate the tough shots and tough passes. But lots of folks should take 3s and make easier passes to 3 pt shooters or cutters or post players. And everyone crashes the lane and the offensive glass. Sounds closer overall to the Clippers than anyone else I can think of immediately. I guess...

Re: A Team Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

... three-point attempts should be taken more liberally, while mid-range shots should be taken more conservatively. If you've been around these parts for very long, you'd know that LOTS of people have come to this conclusion. It would only be a slight exaggeration to say Everyone has held this theo...

Re: Emerging team strategy

Miami and Dallas won titles the last 2 years largely because some role players hit more than their usual number of three-ptrs. Does this then become an effective strategy for all teams? -- Have your role players shoot a lot of 3's and make more than they normally do. Well, I think teams need to hav...

Re: Emerging team strategy

Nice post. I agree with it and think that you have written something quite readable. Are you willing to share any detailed research data and analysis supporting the recommendation of the one lead initiator? Is sharing offensive rebounding duty important across 3,4 or 5 guys on the court or is it ma...

Re: Looking for 2011 playoffs lineup data

I picked it up fairly quickly. It's an object-oriented scripting language with good regular expression handling. It wouldn't hurt me to try. Please email me: nshaahinfar@gmail.com. Also, any luck with those Miami lineups? Those lineups, especially those with Haslem and Miller are more conducive to ...
