Re: Final rush of draft chat

One thing to account for when weighting draft pick trades is the third pick may be more valuable to a team due to the prior draft picks. For example if you are believe that the number one player in the draft is available at 3 (in Crow's first example Lonzo slipping"Although very unlikely now th...

Re: What's the best publicly available defensive metric?

As the Y-axis I obviously used the percentages and for the X-axis I used 2012-2013 Defensive RAPM located at http://stats-for-the-nba.appspot.com/ratings/2013.html

Re: What's the best publicly available defensive metric?

Last year at the Sloan Sports Conference Kirk Goldsberry and Eric Weiss presented a research paper titled "The Dwight Effect :A New Ensemble of Interior Defense Analytics for the NBA" The paper can be found online if anyone is interested in reading about it. The paper uses player tracking ...

Re: Most "Above Average" Player

Are all values rated equally? Not saying this is right or wrong but some would argue that passing is not as important of a skill for big men as rebounding is. Since for most teams post are not required to facilitate the offense as much as they are required to rebound and play defense.

Re: The Iverson Effect

I think this is just further evidence to Dean Oliver's original idea that an increase in usage rate leads to a decrease in efficiency. I don't have any statistics of those old 76ers teams. However, with Iverson out I am confident his replacement did not have a usage rate close to Iverson's. This wou...

Re: Contested Rebounding Percentage Question

Perhaps this shows that Mike G's first statistic is a better indicator of rebounding. What % of a players rebounds which are contested can be very helpful in determining how many of his rebounds were necessary to changing possession, or instead just a product of him beating his teammate to the board.

Re: Should defenses let long 2s go uncontested?

One quick note about your math. You add 12% to the 38% as a result of the shots being uncontested. However, at least some of the shots that account for the 38% would be uncontested. Your equation would be correct assuming that currently no long range jumpers are uncontested, which is not quite the c...

Re: Favorite Basketball Analytics Books?

Again not strictly a basketball book, but the book Scorecasting is also a great read. Not as much analytic based as maybe you are hoping for but definitely an interesting way of looking at the game outside of the norm. Very interesting, very objective with statistical basis for every claim they make.

Re: How many teams have a 10+% chance to win title next seas

I think besides Miami the large amount of parody really diminishes this number. With up to 3 teams from the east (besides Miami), and 6 in the West. This leads to 9 teams splitting the remaining 65%( If Miami is given around 35%, which I feel is correct). This is also not accounting for small percen...

Offensive Rating( Without Rebounding)

I know this sounds sac-religious. Taking emphasis away from rebounding, but the way I see it offensive rebounds are separate from how efficient you are with the ball. I was wondering how other stat-heads would take to the idea of instead of incorporating rebounding into an offensive rating, rating o...
