Already "Parsable" historic PBP, point spreads Data

Post by linearwhiz »

Hello All

it's great there's a lot of people into this deep niche !

I'm trying my first serious gig with this, and trying my best not to re-invent any wheels

I'm from a Comp Engineering background so I like to play with numbers and understand what a software is but don't necessarily know how to use all.. so because of that and because I'm so impatient to start from zero.. I am broadcasting this message requesting some "Dedicated help" from some one and offering to compensate them for it because I don't think its fair to ask so much of some's time without something in return !

All I am after at the moment is some data ( in Excel or Access if you have it or any special software that you might have developed ) about PBP data and also spread info for the same period ( regardless of what exactly the period is ) and anything you have on top of that would be extra ! and if you could develop a small "how to" guide on how to query/Parse through the info ..

I figured instead of me investing some 15 hours trying to re invent the wheel, I could compensate someone else for a couple of hours work

you're welcome to private me or post back

Thank you

PbP is available at http://basketballvalue.com/downloads.php

(Older stuff at http://www.apbr.org/metrics/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=7842 )

Point spreads are not available in a compiled format, as far as I know, except for pay: http://downloads.nbastuffer.com/downloa ... s-seasons/

Not sure if I understood the question but point spread during a game can, to some extend, derived from bbv's matchupfiles

I think he meant Vegas point spreads for the period during which the games are being played. I could be wrong though. The terms are obviously easy to switch casually.

Thanks guys, what I am trying to do is look at every game in the last 6-8 years and check the Vegas Odds point spread before the game then analyze the score as the game goes on and "Query" the database for the largest lead for each team during the games !!

I can def download the stuff from BV and another source and combine then in one file , but reading through the posts I assumed someone must've done this before me hence I am asking !

thanks again for contributing

Ok, I have Vegas lines for the last 31 seasons (back to the 1981-82 season)...I have quarters data from PBP data back about 6 years and I am looking for a way to clean up 2002-03 thru 2004-05 and then I'll have another 3 seasons of quarter stats...

I am not sure if anyone has ever considered the "biggest lead of a game" a significant handicapping stat, as I don't know any handicapper who looks at that "angle"...

If you want trends, angles and data that relates to handicapping the NBA, I have got them as I have been capping the NBA for 30 years and have a database that goes back just as far that I am filling in year by year...

I have a sample from the 1998-99 strike season...The data for that season is far from complete as it has not all been added yet as most of the data on that sample is from the template I have, but at least you can see the array of trends/angles/categories I have to back-track with...
