Looking for 2011 playoffs lineup data

Post by Nima »

I want to do an analysis on the playoff lineups for the Mavericks and Heat before the start of tonight's game and I am looking for lineup data that would have the numbers for all statistical categories for each player in the lineup. e.g. player 1 fgm, fga, 3pm, 3pa, ftm, fta, oreb, dreb, assists, TO, steals, blocks, PF, player 2 (same stats)....player 3 (same stats)....player 4 (same stats)....player 5 (same stats).

Does anyone know where I can acquire that data?

Thanks.

You can compile this from Basketball Value's PbP database. I don't know of any place where it is already parsed out. EvanZ might have it.

It can be done with some effort, maybe not by tonight, though.

What lineups are you interested in? It's a manual process right now, so it would take about 5 minutes for me to do each one. I can probably do 10 or so for you.

Evan, I would greatly appreciate that. Thank you.

Let me take a quick look at the lineups on basketballvalue.com and pick out the ones that have played the most, minus some exceptions.

Thank you so much.

For future reference, how would I take the play by play data and convert it to lineup data? Thanks.

With Dallas' lineups, the 5 I would look at would certainly be the 5 that have played the most possessions in the playoffs.

1. Kidd, Stevenson, Marion, Nowitzki, Chandler
2. Barea, Terry, Stojakovic, Nowitzki, Haywood
3. Kidd, Terry, Marion, Nowitzki, Chandler
4. Kidd, Terry, Stojakovic, Marion, Chandler
5. Kidd, Terry, Stojakovic, Nowitzki, Chandler

Miami might be a little harder to figure out with Haslem and Miller showing up in the Chicago series with James Jones taking a back seat. Any thoughts on what lineups we'll see in the finals from the Heat?

Edited (if not too late) - The Miami lineups that I would like to look at:

1. Bibby, Wade, James, Bosh, Anthony
2. Wade, Miller, James, Haslem, Bosh
3. Chalmers, Miller, James, Haslem, Bosh
4. Chalmers, Wade, James, Bosh, Anthony
5. Wade, Jones, James, Bosh, Anthony

Let me know if these are good, and then I'll do the Miami ones:

Lineup 1

Lineup 2

Lineup 3

Lineup 4

Lineup 5

Here's a glossary of columns.

Thank you, Evan! Before you start Miami's, I may change them, so give me just a couple minutes. I may just go with the 5 linueps they used most against Chicago, though that would eliminate James Jones. Thoughts?

I'm a little confused about what I am looking at. I see a long list of players, many of whom haven't played in the playoffs. I'm probably just interpreting the data wrong, but I'm not sure.

I can email you an example of what Dean sent me that I have used for lineup data so far...unless I can figure out how to post it as you did.

Essentially, the data is in this format, by column and all in the same row:

Lineup...poss...defposs...fga1...fga1...fg3m1...fg3a1...ftm1...fta1...oreb1...dreb1...treb1...ast1...pf1...stl1...tov1...blk1...fgm2.......................all the way through player 5.

(fga2 2pfg2 2pfga2 fg3m2 fg3a2 ftm2 fta2 oreb2 dreb2 treb2 ast2 pf2 stl2 tov2 blk2 fgm3 fga3 2pfgm3 2pfga3 fg3m3 fg3a3 ftm3 fta3 oreb3 dreb3 treb3 ast3 pf3 stl3 tov3 blk3 fgm4 fga4 2pfgm4 2pfga4 fg3m4 fg3a4 ftm4 fta4 oreb4 dreb4 treb4 ast4 pf4 stl4 tov4 blk4 fgm5 fga5 2pfgm5 2pfga5 fg3m5 fg3a5 ftm5 fta5 oreb5 dreb5 treb5 ast5 pf5 stl5 tov5 blk5)

I am pretty sure that data Evan provided is for those Dallas lineups and their opponents for the time that Dallas lineup was on the court. You can sort by the team column and the 5 Dallas guys get grouped together and you can look at the boxscore data provided. The opponent information can be used or set aside.

If Evan is able & willing to automate the compile process for lineups over a possession cutoff we could see the player data in a particular lineup data that the Mavs probably see from Roland but is not revealed on 82games. I have wanted more of that for a long time and would welcome its arrival, if it is graciously produced and provided. Ryan Parker shared some data in this manner a few seasons ago before going inside an NBA team.

Got it. Thanks.

And thanks again, Evan.

I take it this is regular season data, given the other players in the set. Does it include playoff data? Playoff data alone would be ideal, though I know it is a lot to ask already and you've already done the work on this data. Either way, thank you so much.

I am going to need to figure out how to take the play by play data and convert it so I can do this on my own.

Yes, it's what Crow said. Those other players are the opponents that Dallas faced in those lineups. It actually gives you the ability to determine opponent quality. It doesn't include playoff data. I'm not sure you would even benefit from that, since it's a) small sample size and b) all against one opponent. It might really skew your analysis.

Do you know Ruby? I can give you my code. As long as you follow the CC license, I'm happy to do that.

I do not know Ruby. Is it something I can pick up with some work? I greatly appreciate the offer, whether I can take advantage of it or not.
