Newbie Questions
Newbie Questions
I am just starting to learn about advanced stats and have some basic questions.
I have heard commentators say things like, "Golden State's defense is number one versus small forwards"...or "the Knicks are giving up the fourth most points to PG's this year." I see that 82games has this raw data, but it doesn't look to me like it's ranked (correct me if I'm missing something on their site). Can anyone provide a link where I could find such information?
I'd also like to see rankings of team scoring off fastbreak points, turnovers, via made free throws, and in the paint. Any links where this stuff is readily available?

You can get a lot of those stats on hoopsstats.com. For example here are the defensive stats vs SF's. You can do that for every position.CappieP wrote:I am just starting to learn about advanced stats and have some basic questions.

You can get in the paint stats on NBA.com. This link also has points made by fastbreak, off of turnovers, and 2nd chance points.

Re: Newbie Questions
Thank you colts, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Now is there a boxscore that gives PIP, POTO, and FBP? The ones I look at might have one or two, but not all three of those for individual games.
Also as an aside, does anybody know what the definition of a point in the paint is? I ask that because I was wondering if a fastbreak layup is counted as points in the paint.

Re: Newbie Questions
teamrankings.com has these stats per game for teams.
I would think that fastbreak points count as points in the paint since they literally are but I am not 100% sure everybody does it that way.

Re: Newbie Questions
I'm interesting in finding a all-in-one source for each game, not the running averages like treamrankings has.Crow wrote:teamrankings.com has these stats per game for teams.
Re: Newbie Questions
You can get that data from NBA.com. Click on the link from above that I gave you. There is a trick where you can find that data on a game level. Click on the add/remove filters button and then click "from" and also click "to." What this does is allow you see a teams stat on a certain date. Here is an example. I did it for yesterday's gamesCappieP wrote:Thank you colts, that's exactly what I was looking for.

As you can see, it has the PIP, FBP, POTO, etc. for that day.
Re: Newbie Questions
Wow. That is cool. Thank you!
Re: Newbie Questions
I was looking at the glossary on the hoopsstats site, and noticed they defined points in the paint as "Power-Forward + Center Stats." This seems sensible to me, but I always took PITP to be, you know, PITP.
The glossary at NBA.com doesn't define the term, so I was wondering if the hoopstats way of calculating it is standard or is there own innovation. Anybody know?

Re: Newbie Questions
Where can I find usage statistics to tell me which players each team is most dependent on?
Re: Newbie Questions
what do you mean? You can find stats like what player assisted a certain player the most.CappieP wrote:Where can I find usage statistics to tell me which players each team is most dependent on?
