Adjusting defense by using offensive results?
Adjusting defense by using offensive results?
Has anyone done anything to adjust a teams defensive rating by the distribution of offensive outcomes they produce? For example if a team has a lot of turnovers, their defensive rating will suffer because turnovers lead to higher points allowed. If that team scores at a higher rate, their defense is artificially boosted by the advantage they get from that. It would make sense to adjust a teams defense by their offensive outcomes. Maybe a team like Chicago would look better defensively because they turn it over a lot and they shoot a low percentage.

Very interesting thought. It would work both ways (offense->defense and defense->offense)colts18 wrote:Has anyone done anything to adjust a teams defensive rating by the distribution of offensive outcomes they produce? Other things from a coaching perspective that I like is OReb% compared to Fastbreak points allowed and the like.

I like this idea. But what exactly does this "adjustment" tell us?
Basically just an adjustment to give us a better look at how teams fare in half-court sets?

Not necessarily half court. It just gives us a better picture of which teams are good on offense and defense by separating the too. The Rockets aren't as good on offense as we think they are. They score about a point more per100 possessions because of something that happens on the other side of the court.
