2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Hey all, new guy. I've been lurking/reading and am a regular on RealGM, but come here to read up on any statistical insights. Just wanted to post about a few of the OKC points (I'm a forum mod over on RealGM for them, and a big Westbrook/Durant fan). Brooks has me and I think many baffled as to the rotations as well. His reluctance seems to be in not wanting to play younger players over vets, specifically Fisher/Butler. Its bizarre at this point as Butler shouldn't touch the court against LA, who is a vastly more athletic team than Memphis and Butler can't keep up with. I think I'd rather even see some of the unproven players out there just because they can at least keep up (Perry Jones, Lamb). Adams has provided a ton of quality minutes, but for some reason Brooks seems unwilling to play Butler less. This is one of the reasons I've been trying to keep up with the coaching RAPM thread and info on it, as I'm trying to figure out Brooks (other than having 2 great players alone with a very strong third in Ibaka) having such a high rating.
Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Westbrook is averaging more than 27 pts, 8 reb, and 8 ast per game, thru 12 playoff games.
The only other player to avg 27-8-8 in 400+ minutes is Oscar Robertson, 1963 and '64.
Durant is over 30-9-4 averages. Other players to do that for 500+ minutes are Baylor '61 and '63, Oscar '63, Kareem '74, Hakeem '95, and LeBron '09 and '12.
LeBron is at 30-7-4.6; players to do this for 500+ playoff minutes: Baylor, Oscar, Kareem, Jordan (4 times), LeBron (3 times), Durant last year.
Chris Paul is getting 19-4-10 and 3 steals/G. Others with 19-4-10 for 400+ minutes: Cousy '59, Johnny Moore '83; Magic '86, '87, '88, '91; Stockton '88, KJ '89, Nash '05, and Paul '08.
Stockton averaged 19.5-4.1-14.8 and 3.4 steals in '88 playoffs. Moore got 2.5 Stl, and Magic's high was 1.9

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Well, coach-RAPM rating is oblivious regarding rotations. It's not designed to incorporate that. Instead, it's trying to answer the question "How well will players perform with this coach". "which player gets how many minutes" does not go into the equation.bondom343 wrote:This is one of the reasons I've been trying to keep up with the coaching RAPM thread and info on it, as I'm trying to figure out Brooks (other than having 2 great players alone with a very strong third in Ibaka) having such a high rating.
In coach-RAPM, a coach that prefers to play a +0.5 player over a +2 player, but makes the +0.5 player perform a little over expectations (say, +0.75), will get a positive rating
As for why Brooks' rating is so high, as I've mentioned in the coach-RAPM thread, most of the current and ex- OKC players are playing (have played) much better for Scott Brooks compared to playing for other coaches (when controlling for player age). These players include Durant, Harden, Martin, Collison and Fisher.

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Ah thanks J.E. I remembered the part about players playing better w/ Brooks, but am wondering if some of that is due to being alongside Durant, Westbrook, and Ibaka.J.E. wrote:Well, coach-RAPM rating is oblivious regarding rotations. Summaries of all 2nd round series. Playoff WS/48 and PER were gotten from b-r.com; and 1st round rates (from 2nd post in this thread) were minutes-weighted and subtracted, to derive round-2 rates.
Players are listed in order of total playoff minutes.Only for the SA-Por series do team PER sum to 15.0 (average).
Both teams in the Ind-Was series had terrible PER, while Mia-Brk and Okl-LAC were all above avg.
The Blazers' collapse looks especially ugly in Win Shares. Only a couple of players added anything. The Spurs were collectively all-league.

Was David West above or below avg in the series? Ian Mahinmi? Al Harrington?
Were the Nets led by Joe Johnson, Teletovic and Kirilenko? Or by Johnson, DWill, Livingston, Pierce, Garnett?

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
In the last 10 postseasons, of players with at least 400 playoff minutes, players who at this time would place among the top 100.
An avg in any category would of course be 10 entries. But as the playoffs advance, more players will reach 400 minutes. Offsetting that is the presumed increased competition, which tends to depress individual stats.TS% leaders are further qualified at >15 pts/36. This leaves Ariza off the list, as he scored just 13.3/36 while shooting .626
Chris Paul's Stl% is tied for best in the interval (Tony Allen last yr), and his Ast% is 6th best.
Jordan's Blk and Reb were 3rd/4th highest.
